Seashells and sunshine made this the perfect seaside wedding for our coast-loving couple…
The first date
A relaxed evening in a local pub was the scene of Laura and Ben’s first date. “I had a sense that he was right for me,” Laura recalls. “I have so many
lovely memories of when we were going out – trips to Cornwall, playing crazy golf and hanging around in arcades like a couple of kids!”
The proposal
Laura was completely stunned when, having asked her father’s permission, Ben asked her to marry him over a delicious dinner at her favourite restaurant in Cornwall. “I was very surprised!” she says.
The bride’s outfit
Laura chose a beautiful Benjamin Roberts dress for her big day – a strapless fishtail design in lace and tulle. “It made me feel like Jessica Rabbit,” she explains. Laura had a sash made by an Etsy seller to complement her gown, and wore a cathedral-length, lace-edged veil. One pair of shoes wasn’t enough for this bride, who treated herself to pink Christian Louboutin heels and a second pair from Vivienne Westwood.
The groom’s outfit
Between them, the couple chose a vivid blue tailored suit from Hugo Boss for Ben to wear, teamed with a pale pink waistcoat, a pink tie with an anchor design from TM Lewin, and brown shoes. “He looked amazing,” Laura smiles. “He was like a Hugo Boss model – calm, but hot!”
The bridesmaids
Laura chose five bridesmaids – her best friend, sister-in-law, niece, god-daughter and cousin. The adult bridesmaids shimmered in pink prom-style dresses from Alfred Sung, while the little flowergirls’ dresses were handmade by Laura’s mum using seaside fabric by Poppy Children.
The ceremony
Laura and Ben’s church ceremony included readings from 1 Corinthians and The Velveteen Rabbit, and the traditional hymns Lord of the Dance, Give Me Joy in My Heart and Morning has Broken. “My favourite memory is of the journey to the church with my dad, in a vintage VW camper,” says Laura. “The sun was shining and I’d made a special CD to play to calm my nerves,” she says.
The flowers
Laura carried a pretty handtied bouquet of vibrant blue and pink peonies, while the bridesmaids’ bouquets were unstructured sprays of gypsophila. Laura made the groomsmen’s buttonholes, while her mum arranged the church flowers. “The church looked amazing – it took my breath away,” says Laura.
The reception
Glendorgal Hotel, set in 17 acres of private headland overlooking the dramatic Cornish coast, was the perfect setting for Laura and Ben’s seaside-themed wedding reception. They gave a nod to their surroundings with the fab menu! “We served a wonderful local menu, including broccoli and Cornish Stilton soup, Cornish rib eye steak with chunky chips and a Cornish cream tea, and also had an old-fashioned ice cream cart,” Laura says.
The details
Laura and her band of helpers worked hard to produce the DIY details for their coastal celebration, including bunting, pinwheel place settings, pink and white coconut ice and a wish tree covered with knitted sea creatures.
The cake
The two-tier wedding cake, by Cupcakemama, featured lemon drizzle and chocolate red velvet layers with buttercream icing and cake toppers from Folksy. There was also a separate seaside-themed cake decorated with pink and white iced beach huts and bunting.
The favours
Laura’s sister made seashell-shaped chocolates to give out as favours, alongside miniature bottles of Jägermeister for the grown-ups to help the party go with a swing. The female guests were also invited to take off their heels and slip on some flip flops to prepare for a night of rocking the dancefloor – a considerate and super-cool touch!
The honeymoon
Laura’s bridesmaid treated the lucky couple to a surprise all-inclusive honeymoon to Tenerife. “We sunbathed, relaxed and had massages – perfect!” says Laura.
