Just engaged? Your wedding dress is going to be one of the first things you buy, so make sure you’re bang on trend! What are real brides likely to be wearing this year? We caught up with some of the UK’s best designers to find out…
Award-winning designer Ian Stuart, creator of some really dramatic and theatrical bridal gowns, had this to say – which might surprise you. “I actually believe that bridal is quite trendless. There are more popular looks, such as vintage, romantic, 50s, bohemian and modern.”
“These seem to be generally appealing, but it seems to be more of a reflection of peoples’ lifestyles rather than trends in fashion, so I don’t see these ever going away. Your wedding is your chance to be different and express your mood and personality – and find a dress that you love and feel amazing in.”
“For my latest collection I really wanted to celebrate the diversity of the modern bride and took inspiration from personality, translating that into different looks that I thought worked best for this collection.”

Ayesha Donaldson who runs My London Wedding Planner has been well placed to see wedding dress trends over the past year and know what brides are planning for 2014.
“The Great Gatsby and 1920s Art Deco style was hot this year and will carry on being a hot trend in 2014,” she says. “It’s all about vintage lace and beading, 1920s hair and accessories, feathers and lots of pearls adding a touch of Gatsby glamour to your special day.”
“Looking ahead? I’d say blush is the new white! Blush/coloured wedding dresses are hot for the New Year – pale rose, blush, pink, peach, creams and golds are in and also white gowns with a splash of colour are trending.”
“Vintage rosy gowns with antique lace or beaded trims are going to be big news too. To go with the vintage colours, brides are choosing antique accessories to add a hit of colour to their wedding look. I’m thinking tiaras and vintage Deco hairbands with lots of beads, pearls and sparkle!”
A touch of film star glamour
We’d say that Jessica Biel is responsible for the resurgence of coloured wedding dresses into the mainstream – showcased by her Italy wedding to Justin Timberlake when she wore a pale pink wedding dress. The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco followed in her footsteps, too, and tied the knot in a pink Vera Wang gown on New Year’s Eve.
We also talked to designers Qiana Bridal about their observations and plans for 2014. Have a look at their catwalk show to see how different styles translate when they’re worn. “Wedding gowns in 2014 can be anything from quite structural and slim in silhouette to full and romantic, like the shapes of the 1950s where the waist is defined and skirts are full.”
“Fabrics range from brocades to soft silks, laces and organza in the softest of colour palettes from blue to champagne, to the traditional ivory. Sleeves will be very prominent and gowns can be either quite dramatic with breath-taking lace cut-out backs with ruffles and bows or be more simplistic where less embellishment creates an understated elegance.”
What the real brides will be rocking
Our real weddings section is always popular and we’re always amazed at how every one is different, with each bride managing to put her own stamp on her big day. So what trends did we see in 2013?
First off, we’re seeing more weddings abroad which is having a real effect on what brides are choosing in terms of dresses. Destination brides are going for lighter fabrics like tulle rather than heavy lace and brocades. See Annette and Greg’s Tuscany wedding – we loved the ruffles on her frock from Angelica Bridal.
Straps are making a comeback in 2014 with many collections from the top designers boasting lace sleeves, shrugs or boloeros. In fact dresses that go from day to night are very popular. Take a look at Lindsey and Dave’s summer wedding day to see what we mean.
We also noticed more back detail going on in wedding dresses in 2013. Real bride Alice rocked a beautiful back in one of our favourite weddings from the last year.
That’s a trend we’d like to see a lot more of – after all, your guests are going to spend a lot of time looking at your back during the ceremony so why not put on a show?
