Small budget weddings can still be stunning, as this couple’s gorgeous vintage-style wedding shows!
How they met
Kelly and Ryan met at school at the age of 11, but it wasn’t until they had gone to university in separate towns that the spark between them ignited. “One night, we were both out in our home town, and bumped into each other – he looked rather startled when I ran up and gave him a big hug!” says Kelly. “Over the next few days, we texted each other, and I invited him to a family Christmas party. He accepted, and the rest was history.”

The proposal
Ryan surprised his bride-to-be by proposing on the last day of their holiday in Tuscany. “We’d decided to spend the day in Pisa, so we’d set the alarm clock,” Kelly remembers. “When it went off, I opened my eyes to see Ryan standing over me in just his boxer shorts, holding a breakfast tray. He laid the tray on my lap, and before I knew what was happening, got down on one knee – and then I noticed the ring on the tray. I instantly burst into tears of happiness.”
The bride’s outfit
Kelly struck it lucky when she won her wedding dress in a competition, and chose a feminine chiffon style from Alexia Bridal, with lace and crystal detailing. “I’d tried on big and bold dresses, but just didn’t feel happy in them,” Kelly explains. “As soon as I put the Alexia on, I felt like me. It made me feel like a 1920’s bride, with a 2013 twist.” She added shoes by Kate Klein for Beholden Bridal and pearl jewellery from Etsy.
The groom’s outfit
Ryan wore a formal dark grey suit from Ted Baker, of his own choosing. “He looked so handsome on our big day, and although I could tell he was nervous, he was beaming from ear to ear and looked really happy,” says Kelly.
The bridesmaids
Mindful of the tight budget, Kelly found dresses in next for close friends Kat and Rachael and niece Katie, who looked elegant in the nude lace style. “Luckily the dresses came in tall, regular and petite sizes, because my bridesmaids are all different heights,” Kelly says. Kelly’s mum customised the dresses with ivory satin ribbon sashes.
The ceremony
Kelly and Ryan’s civil ceremony featured the quirky poem A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton, read by good friend Becky. “My mum brought me up on her own since I was 14, so she walked me down the aisle, to an instrumental version of Turning Page by Sleeping at Last,” says Kelly. “I was incredibly nervous and very emotional.”
The flowers
The flowers were provided as part of Narborough Hall’s wedding package. “They were all sourced from Narborough Hall’s gardens, and were beautifully arranged by their in-house florist,” says Kelly. The bride and bridesmaids carried hand-tied posies in a pretty spring palette of pinks, creams and peach.
The reception
A marquee in the spectacular gardens of Narborough Hall, with its mill pond and award-winning kitchen garden, was the stunning setting for the reception. “We didn’t want anything too formal, so we decided to have a hog roast – cheap, cheerful and a crowd-pleaser,” Kelly explains. A local DJ provided the entertainment, with Kelly and Ryan’s first dance to Someone like You by Van Morrison.
The details
Almost everything was homemade, from the invitations to the cakes. Kelly joined forces with her mum and sister to make huge lengths of bunting, and the table numbers were bought from The Range and covered with moss from a local florist. “It took me and my bridesmaid hours to glue the moss to the numbers, surrounded by centipedes on my living room floor!” laughs Kelly.
The cake
Kelly’s sister, a keen amateur baker, contributed the beautiful tower of vanilla iced cupcakes. “My mum, sister and I made the lace skirts and vintage themed decorations for each,” Kelly says.
The favours
Kelly, her mum and sister baked heart-shaped iced cookies to give out as favours. “We packaged them in cellophane bags, and attached labels stamped with our names and wedding date,” Kelly explains.
The honeymoon
The couple took a wonderful break in Paris.
