Let Them Eat Cakes (Eight, That Is): Wedding Cake Buffet
Guys, I finally did it. I picked a wedding cake. Or rather, I picked wedding cakes. Eight of them, to be exact.
As you may remember, I was having a harrrrd time picking the cake. Blame it on my pastry-chef past—it’s not easy putting down a few hundred bucks on something I could do myself (and could do better, in some instances).
But believe it or not, we nailed down flavors—without EVER tasting the cake.
How? Well, I trusted my dad, mom, and sister to do it. And one day, my dad and sis went on a cake tasting, brought back leftovers for my mom, and sent Mr. W and me a VERY detailed email regarding each flavor, along with this shot of the tasting cupcakes.

Don’t they look delicious?
They had nothing but nice things to say about all the flavors except one (red velvet, which neither Mr. W nor I enjoys), and they have good taste—and great taste buds—so we used their best judgment.
And since neither of us is attached to the idea of having one wedding cake, we’re doing a cake buffet—eight cakes total, plus the delicious fried peach-plum and apple hand pies we tried at the catering tasting.
So what’d we pick?
Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting. This was a chocoholic’s dream. According to my dad, “Another strong favorite. I thought it had nice frosting and very good cake. A strong contender. K really liked it. Frosting not overly sweet. E loves chocolate and this one hit her taste buds very well.” Sold.
Carrot Cake. Carrot was Mr. W’s favorite. From my official taste testers: “We all liked the carrot cake…K really liked it. Good spice, will hold up well as a slice. Great cream cheese frosting. E liked it as well, and said it had nice spicing and very tasty cream cheese frosting. Nice and moist; she liked the nuts on top.”
Lemon Cake. Lemon was a personal favorite—I love all things citrusy. “I thought it was quite tasty and was glad the lemon was not overpowering. K thought it was great and liked that the tartness showed through. E liked it a lot; one of her favorites.“
Confetti Cake with Berry Filling. This was the oddball, but something fun for the vanilla cake lovers. From my dad: “I thought it was colorful, fun, and a good party cake. K liked it but thought it was a bit on the sweet side and might be improved with fresh berries between the layers (available). Our host told us it was one of the favorites for wedding cakes because it is so festive.”
And as for the look of the cake, we’re going simple: white (or off white) frosting on all but the chocolate cake. I’ll have our planner decorate the table with some flowers, and keep it simple. For me, it’s more about the flavor than the aesthetic, at least when it comes to dessert.

Besides, our bakery does simple cakes beautifully, as you can see above.
I think Mr. W and I will probably end up cutting the carrot cake at the wedding—if we do a cake cutting. He’s a carrot cake lover, and I can’t resist cream cheese frosting.
And who knows, I may even pick up a cake topper for one of the cakes—but there’s a better chance that we go with fresh flowers for decor and leave the cakes simple. It’s more my style.
