Blogging continues to become more and more popular every day. Whether you are looking to share your knowledge or experience with the world, have a place to vent and rant, or make some extra money on the side through blogging – setting up a great looking blog has never been easier.

My name is Adam Bate and I’ve been making a living blogging online since 2009. This detailed walkthrough on setting up a blog is my way to help you get your own professional and awesome looking (and performing) blog setup right away.

I know you can do it on your own, but I also understand that it might be quicker and more convenient for you to have me do it. Why Is This Guide The Best “How To” Guide For Starting A Blog?

I would be lying if I said this is the only guide out there. There are a lot of guides that will help teach you to setup your first blog. However, most of those guides are setup by people that don’t have the experience of running and promoting a successful blog. It’s really tough to teach someone how to be successful when you haven’t done so yourself.

There are a few decent guides out there that I could recommend, but the ones that I found worth promoting all cost money – anywhere between $100 and as high as $300. I’m all for paying for education, but when it comes to learning how to start a blog, I really don’t think you need to spend money.

So Why Listen To Me?

Great question. The bottom line is that I have the experience in all aspects of blogging. You see, some people are excellent techies but have no idea how the marketing or promotion side works, while others are great at marketing and promoting a blog but couldn’t set one up and configure it to save their lives.

I have owned and operated a web hosting company, in which we have helped thousands and thousands of bloggers setup and configure their blogs over the past decade. I also make a great full-time living off of blogs and spend some of my time promoting and growing my own blogs in a variety of industries.

Regardless of whether you want to earn money with your blog, having the proper setup and promoting it in a way that actually builds a readership will make the entire much more fun and rewarding.

Why Can’t I Just Setup One Of Those Free Blogs?

It’s certainly possible, but something I do not recommend. When it comes to free blogs – you get what you pay for. In fact, free blogs aren’t really free at all. There are plenty of free options out there – blogger, tumblr, posterous – but after learning what I know now I could not recommend any of them for starting a blog. Here’s why:

1. You don’t actually own or control your blog

Imagine the photos that you posted to your blog – whether family photos, vacations, or photos of your home – being spread or sold across the Internet. Depending on the terms of service and privacy policy of many of these free blog sites, this is possible and they actually have the right to do this. It is definitely scary to think about.

Not only that, but the company is allowed to shut down your blog for whatever reason, anytime. It could be content that it didn’t like, a spike in traffic that you weren’t expecting, or just about any other excuse they can think of.

2. It’s much easier to get hacked or lose your blog

Because sites like Blogger are so popular they are often the target of a lot of hacking attempts. Although they have great systems in place to protect from things like this, usernames and passwords are often compromised, and they are usually very little help at getting you back up and running.

3. You are very limited in what you can do with your blog

Most free blogs don’t let you put up any sort of advertisements (in fact a lot of them use their own ads and take that income away from you). Not only that, but the layout and styling of free blogs is very limited and you can only choose between a few select templates.

Getting setup with a real blog is not expensive – in face it’s very cheap and it can save you a lot of money and headache in the long run. Whatever you do, don’t start a free blog, regardless of how serious you are about blogging – it will save you so much hassle. Getting setup with proper hosting for a blog is only about $5 per month – basically one latte.

Can I Start Any Type Of Blog With This Guide?

Yes! This guide teaches you exactly what to do to get a blog up and running on the WordPress platform – this is a blogging framework that is used by over 90% of the Internet’s blogs.
