OGDEN – A slow start spelled doom for the Wildcats.
lt;br />Idaho State's Baylee Smithson scored late in the first half as the Bengals upset the Weber State University women's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field in Big Sky Conference action.
lt;br />Smithson's goal was the last shot Idaho State would take on the afternoon as Weber State outshot the Bengals 14-0 in the final 45 minutes. The Wildcats played the final 35 minutes with a man-advantage after the Bengals' Jennifer McCaw was ejected after violently fouling Wildcat senior forward Lana Willard from behind on a breakaway.
lt;br />Ten of the Wildcats' 14 second-half shots were on frame as Weber State's attack took over the match, but by the Purple and White were unable to break through the Bengals' deeply entrenched defensive unit.
lt;br />Weber State fell to 3-4-1 in Big Sky play (5-8-2 overall), and must now win both of its final two matches next week on the road to qualify for the Big Sky Conference's postseason tournament next month.
lt;br />The Wildcats travel to Sacramento State on Friday, before wrapping up the regular season on Sunday at Portland State.
