Heavy snow southern Scotland Good morning, A powerful area of low pressure (named 'Doris' by the UK Met Office) passes quickly eastwards across Britain today, bringing widespread gales or local severe gales. Wind gusts will reach 50-60mph in many exposed areas, but in a swathe across northern England and the north Midlands, gusts exceeding 70-80mph are possible over a few hours - transferring eastwards through the day, affecting northern East Anglia in the afternoon. Damage is possible to trees, power lines and buildings, and transport disruption is likely. Heavy rain and snow affects northern areas. Snow will be worst across the Southern Uplands and Cheviots, perhaps the higher North Pennines. 10-20cm is possible over the hills. 2 to 5cm may fall to low levels in central-southern Scotland, but should thaw through the day. Where precipitation stays as rain, 30-40mm is possible across the Scottish Borders.
A cold front clears south-east across southern Britain before midday, followed by brighter skies. A few showers will follow into western areas. The strongest winds will ease from the west through the day. Today's temperatures will be 8 to 10C across the much of England & Wales, but in northern Britain only 5C.
