A ghostly line-up of ‘spooktacular’ events is happening across the Gold Coast to celebrate Halloween with something for young and old.

You’ll either love or hate October 31, the eve of All Saints’ Day that is celebrated by children, and some adults, dressing up in frightening masks and costumes. Halloween is thought to be associated with the Celtic festival Samhain, when ghosts and spirits were believed to be abroad.

A massive night in the US, more Australians are adopting the event and decorating their homes and taking their children trick or treating.

But not everyone is a fan of kids dressing up and asking for lollies or chocolate, so if you come across a house with their lights out it’s best not to bother the homeowners and move on to the next house.

The Queensland Police News website has special Halloween posters that you can download and place on your door signalling whether you were taking part or not.

It also shared some advice and tips for trick or treaters:

Make sure kids are accompanied by a mother or father monster at all times, or another responsible witch, ghost or vampire.

Black cats love to slink around, but you should walk, not run, between houses and stick to the footpath rather than the road, especially if you’re wearing black at night.

Never enter a stranger’s house, even if they have invited you in after knocking on their door.

Consider joining your friends on your neighbourhood adventure – there is safety in numbers.
