Maika Elan also known as Nguyen Thanh Hai is an award winning freelance photographer who lives in Hanoi, Vietnam. The photographer skillfully captures both the old and new generation of Vietnamese people to reveal beautiful insights of the everyday life in the country. Her images give an impression of the contemporary Vietnam with its different faces of tradition and a new self-confidence. The photographs are as varied and colorful as the country itself. With a great sense of certain details as well as colors and settings, Maika Elan wants to document the charming simplicity of life. After studying Sociology at University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Hanoi, Maika Elan discovered her passion for photography. She started taking pictures of her daily life and all the things around her. After practicing a lot, it didn’t take long and she became a professional photographer. In a very short time Elan was hired by a variety of clients from the publishing and fashion industry. After a wide range of commissioned shootings, she turned her focus on documentary photography. Her first project called ‘The Pink Choice’ rapidly gained a lot of attention. The photo series documents the life of gay couples in Vietnam. Selected images of ‘The Pink Choice’ have been published internationally in diverse magazines.
