A round-up of openings, closings, and other news about West Hartford businesses.

By Joy Taylor, in for Ronni Newton

I’m co-opting this week’s column while Ronni enjoys some much needed time away. She “escaped” just a few hours after scheduling a few more stories and co-hosting the second annual Best of West Hartford awards show last Thursday with West Hartford Magazine’s Tom Hickey. You can see a full list of winners below and a short video clip above (a Direct Line Media production). Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners! New this year, we have provided the second and third place business names (when applicable). See lots more below.

First, a couple other tidbits:

•Schools are back in session for most local students and the former Saint Brigid School (now St. Brigid-St. Augustine: A Partnership School) welcomed students from St. Mary in Newington. Please read about the changes here.

•Plus One Defense Systems, a 9000 square foot martial arts facility located at 9 Tolles Road in the Elmwood section of West Hartford, welcomed Master Marcus “Maximus” Aurelio and Heloisa Alves for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar on Saturday, September 10. Marcus Aurélio is a Brazilian Mixed Martial Arts fighter who fought for the PRIDE Fighting Championship and for UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship is the world’s leading mixed martial arts organization). Master Marcus is a BJJ/MMA Master. “It was a great day of training for the students of Plus One and a thrill to learn from Master Marcus who came from Florida to be with our students,” commented Sensei Darin Reisler, owner and head instructor at Plus One Defense Systems. Plus One offers martial arts classes for adults and for kids in a myriad of styles. Classes are available six days per week, and more information can be found at their website.

• The second annual Best of West Hartford awards ceremony put the spotlight on winners (announced live from the stage) and finalists while friends and associates cheered them on in a fun-filled evening of networking, eating and celebrating. Every finalist was put into this contest by obtaining enough nominations by “the people” of the community. Congratulations all, and please enjoy the photos below, make sure you visit Facebook for more images from our SnapSeat Photo Booth, and, for the first time ever, here (below the photos) is a list of the winners and, when applicable, the second and third-place holders of this people’s choice contest:
