The 2017 Oscar nominations are in! After a record setting box office year for Disney, they are being rewarded with a robust 8 Academy Award nominations! Here is the complete list of nominees:

Moana – Best Animated Feature

Zootopia – Best Animated Feature

Piper – Best Animated Short

“How Far I’ll Go” – Moana – Best Original Song

Rogue One – Best Visual Effects

The Jungle Book – Best Visual Effects

Doctor Strange – Best Visual Effects

Rogue One – Best Sound Mixing

From the looks of it, there are no major surprises in the nominations this year. I am a little disappointed to not see “Try Everything”, the theme from Zootopia on the list, but I suppose they needed to make way for two (well deserved) songs from La La Land.

Disney is really dominating the visual effects category this year with three nominations. What’s interesting is each one of the films in this category comes from a different studio division; Rogue One from Lucasfilm, The Jungle Book from the main studio, and Doctor Strange from Marvel. It’s also interesting to note that The BFG was actually distributed by Disney as well, though that does not actually qualify them to take any ownership in the production of the film. It’s a little surprising that Captain America: Civil War did not receive a Visual Effects nod, but there’s only so many nominations to hand out per category.
