(13 WHAM) Greece, N.Y. – Greece Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at The Mall at Greece Ridge Monday.

They say a man in his 20’s was shot and killed by an officer after a confrontation.

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan says officers spotted the man in the parking lot between Sears and Target at the mall just before 3 p.m.

Police say the man matched the description from a missing persons report that had been filed earlier in the day.

“The officer attempted to stop that individual and some sort of altercation occurred and our officer shot the suspect,” said Phelan.

Police blocked off a large area of the parking lot near Target for hours to investigate the incident.

Investigators have identified Officer Eric Hughes as the Greece Police officer involved in the shooting. They said he has 15 years of experience with the department and 17 as an officer.

They have not identified the individual who was shot. Police say none of the officers involved were injured.

An amateur video that surfaced on YouTube appears to show the confrontation between police and the man.

Greece Police tell 13WHAM News they are aware of the existence of this video but they have not been able to authenticate it.

The Mall at Greece Ridge issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

We are cooperating with the Greece Police Department regarding this incident.  This was an isolated, unfortunate occurrence.

Mall shoppers and tenants were never in any danger as the incident was quickly contained in the overflow lot, at the Southwest end of the property.

Our thoughts go out to the families of everyone involved.  Please refer any further questions to the Greece Police Department.
