The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has concluded that a traffic signal at the former General Tire plant entrance in Mayfield should remain in place, but be upgraded.

Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says traffic engineers placed the traffic signal at the intersection of US 45/Paducah-Mayfield Road with KY 1276/Key Bottom Road and General Street in flashing mode on May 1st, to allow a traffic study to determine if it should be removed.

After completing the peak traffic studies over a 90-day period, engineers determined the continuing need for the signal was marginal. However, due to sight-distance and the speed of traffic on US 45 at the intersection, the signal provided an added safety margin at the intersection.

Engineers noted a head within the signal array needs replacing before it can be placed back into regular green/yellow/red service mode, but it’ll be several months before funding can be obtained to allow work to start on construction of a new signal for the intersection.
