LIGHTNING KNOCKS OUT POWER – Lightning is to blame for the outages that left residents in various parts of the county without power Thursday. Sabrina Easley, area manager for Oncor Electric Delivery, said lightning struck a power line in Rhome, breaking the line and cutting the delivery of electricity to more than 1,300 customers in Rhome and Newark. The necessary repairs were made, and power was restored by 12:47 p.m. In Alvord, lightning struck and damaged a piece of electric equipment. Easley said power would be rerouted until repairs are made. Ninety-one customers along Hubbard Street and U.S. 81/287 were affected by this outage. Five customers in the Boonsville/Balsora area also called in. All calls came in around 10 a.m.
RAINFALL – Rain also accompanied the lightning yesterday. Totals included 0.4 of an inch in Cottondale, 0.3 in Greenwood, 0.25 in Decatur and Bridgeport, 0.2 in Rhome and 0.1 in Paradise.
MOTORCYCLE RACES – The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) is in action this weekend at Eagles Canyon Raceway near Slidell. Today’s events include the CMRA License School, racer practice and street-rider track day. Saturday’s schedule includes Lightweight Sprint races followed by round two of the Solo 30 races, and wraps up with the 6-Hour Championship Endurance race. Sunday’s schedule includes a full day of Big Bike sprint races. A portion of each entry fee is donated to breast cancer research. Gates open each day at 6 a.m. Weekend entry into the event is $15 on Friday and Saturday, and $10 on Sunday. Tickets are good for the entire weekend. SCIENCE SPECIAL – Friday Science Specials for Teens at the Decatur Public Library presents Polymer Play – Hands on Gak demonstration and discussion at 4 p.m. today. This is a series of events for kids entering 6th through 12th grade in the fall.
SOCIETY MEETING – The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the First United Methodist Church of Decatur Wesley Center. Guest speaker Dee Ann Archer will give the program “Machu Picchu, Sacred City, Marvel of the World.” A pot luck dinner will be served, and visitors are welcome.
DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP – Wise Regional Health System, the Wise and Montague County Medical Society and Renew Home Health will host a Diabetes Support Group 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, in the Education Room of the hospital in Decatur. Dr. Brad Faglie will host a question-and-answer session on the trials and triumphs of living with diabetes and plans of action. If you have diabetes or know someone with diabetes, you are invited. If it’s your first meeting, come at 6:15 to meet Dr. Faglie and get an introduction to the basics.
BRIDGEPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The Bridgeport Historical Society will meet Monday, June 16, at Weatherford College Wise County (main entrance). James Stegall will give a program on the cemetery at Willow Point. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at noon.
ROLE PLAYING GAME DAY – Decatur Public Library is hosting RPG (Role Playing Game) Day 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Gamemasters will be on hand to get you into the game. FISHING DERBY – The 2014 Kids All-American Fishing Derby is Saturday at Black Creek Lake on the LBJ National Grasslands. BARBECUE FUNDRAISER – The Chico Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual barbecue supper at 5 p.m. Saturday at Chico City Hall, 400 South Hovey St. Entertainment will be provided by the Buckner Band.
