Leadership is a way of life for Harold Colson, the new assistant principal at Bridgeport High School.
Harold Colson
Colson comes to Bridgeport after four years as the administrative intern for the assistant principal at Denton Guyer High School in Denton. He was also their girls basketball coach, where his combined four-year record with the Denton Guyer Wildcats was 50-24, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle.
Colson says that there’s not a whole lot of difference between being a coach and being an assistant principal.
“You’re kind of your own boss when you’re in charge of a [sports] program – you’re in charge of the budget, you’re in charge of the discipline, the rules, you’re dealing with parents,” Colson said. “Working as a coach for so long and being the administrative intern really prepared me for both leadership roles.”
Colson said the move to administration was something he’d been thinking about doing for a while, but he wanted to make sure he had accomplished everything he wanted to as a coach before making that leap.
“They say when you’re a coach, you have to get that coaching blood out of you, so to speak, and to lose that itch for coaching,” Colson said. “I’ve been coachng for about 16 years, and I felt like I had done everything I wanted to do. This just felt like it was a natural transition for me.”
Colson still lives in Denton and commutes every day to work in Bridgeport. He said he is excited to start becoming “a part of the fabric” at Bridgeport High and he looks forward to leading the students, staff and faculty.
“I’ve never been a person who’s shied away from a leadership role, so that’s what I’m looking forward to the most.”
