April 1, 1976

State Senator Walter Baker announced Tuesday he will seek the 2nd District Congressman seat in the U S Congress currently held by Democrat Veteran William H. Natcher.

Three break ins are reported in Edmonton and Metcalfe County. Sheriff Rex Bunch said Murrell’s Men’s Wear, Rupert Beauty Salon and Charles Shirley Barber Shop were entered by prying open doors.

Members of the Port Oliver Yacht Club have poured a new concrete launching ramp on the Barren River Reservoir. The group has purchased land for the construction of a clubhouse and other facilities at the site near the dam.

Optimist Club Speech Boys Winners include Lonnie Perkins, 2nd ; James Bastien, 1st and Steve Newberry, 3rd. Girl Winners were Darlene martin, 1st, Debbie Harrison, 2nd and Laurie Thompson, 3rd.

Bruce Strader is named a Director of the newly merged banks of Hiseville Deposit Bank and New Farmers Bank.

Mrs. Gladys B Thomas and Mrs. Sophia Childers are selected as Nurses of the Year at the District II Unit 1 Meeting.

Etoile Newsletter – Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Greer and Eddy visited Mr. and Mrs. Charlie McDonald Tuesday night. Mrs. Clarence Jones attended a meeting at Bowling Green Thursday night for KEA delegates. Mrs. Montra England visited Mrs. Bryant Elliott Sunday evening.

The Tracy Homemakers had their March meeting in the home of Mrs. James Woodcock. Mrs. Glenn Bush gave the lesson on “Meals for the Ill.”

April 15, 1976 –

The former Pedigo Motor Building located at the corner of S. Green and Wayne Streets was completely destroyed by fire Saturday. It was owned by Citizens Bank and Trust Co.

Dry Fork Church of Christ will observe their 100th anniversary this month.

The $2 bills appeared at Glasgow Banks Tuesday. Bank Officials said they were very popular. James Trigg Pace of Citizens Bank & Trust Co. said that $1000 worth of the bills were put into circulation.

Jesse Grider, US Marshall and native of Glasgow, was recognized at the Glasgow City Council for outstanding service as a law enforcement officer.

Krissy Tolle and Bambi Trautman are candidates for a representative from WKU to the Annual Mountain Laurel Festival held each May in Pineville.

David Harbison, BCHS Band Director, accepted a check on behalf of the band in the amount of $1161 from Allen Denton, Asst. Mgr,  and Mark Preston, News Director, WOVO-WCDS. The funds were the proceeds of a Record Hop sponsored by the two stations.

Student singers who appeared on the DAR Junior American Citizens program are Jimmy Meek, Tracy Sabens, Donald Cash, Lisa Bullington, Dawn Denton, Robin Garrett and Patty Johnson.

April 22, 1976 –

The World’s Free Style Checker Tournament got underway in Glasgow Saturday night at the Electric Plant Board.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held at Homewood Convalescent Center for construction of a new wing housing 112 additional beds.

A large group of area residents met with Barren Fiscal Court Tuesday for a hearing on the relocation of Great Onyx Job Corps. Both supporters of the relocation and those opposed were represented. Magistrates recommended the Job Corps remain at Mammoth Cave National Park.

April 29, 1976 – Joe Lane Travis is elected as a delegate to the Republican National Convention this summer in Kansas City.

Thomas F Crouch and Charles A Goodman, III, have passed the most recent Kentucky bar examination.

New directors of the Glasgow/Barren County Jaycees are Jim Morgan, Tommy Wells, Vaughan Frey, Larry Jolly, Larry Marion, Mike Shirley, Steve Strode and Paul Biggers, III.

Gary D Payne has been appointed the manager of the Sherwin Williams Store in Glasgow at 417 Happy Valley Road.
