MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – A suspect is in custody after the fatal shooting of a western Wisconsin sheriff’s deputy, Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Wallace said Sunday.
The suspect is in jail awaiting formal charges, Wallace said in a statement. Authorities were deploying the Eau Claire County Regional Robot on Sunday to search a residence when they were fired at. The man surrendered without further incident, Wallace said.
He identified the deputy killed Saturday evening near Ladysmith as 33-year-old Dan Glaze.
Officials said the deputy was shot while looking into a suspicious vehicle. Glaze served for 1 1/2 years at the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department, Wallace said. Hayward police Chief Joel Clapero said in a statement that Glaze previously worked at that department from 2007 into 2015.
Wallace said the deputy responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle and told dispatch that it was in a field. Dispatch lost contact, and when backup arrived a short time later, the deputy had been fatally shot.
Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told the Leader-Telegram that Glaze didn’t respond to his radio or his cellphone. He was found dead in his squad car, Fitzgerald said.
Attorney General Brad Schimel said in a statement that the public is now safe after the suspect’s apprehension.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I offer prayers and sincere condolences after Wisconsin law enforcement lost one of its own last evening,” Schimel said in the Sunday release.
