The radio, regardless of format, is typically loaded with chart topping songs and hit singles that — if you listen long enough — will be heard several times a day. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. They’re popular for a reason; we spend money to buy them or continue to request that they be played.
But few things are more satisfying than listening a song you rarely hear, or for that matter, never heard on the radio before. For whatever reason, some songs never catch on like others: it was overshadowed by a lead single; it wasn’t pushed by the record label; it was released on an obscure LP; maybe the band wasn’t popular yet. Regardless, there are songs we wish could be played on the radio that aren’t.
The jocks at CBS-FM have songs that fit into that category and they’ve decided to list their top ten. Today we check in with Rockin’ Ron Parker, who tells us why he wishes these ten songs would be played on the radio.
“After looking over last years WCBSFM TOP 500 song list, I started thinking about some of the songs that don’t get played on the radiio much anymore and songs that I would love to play again. No trouble putting together a list of what I would love to spin again on WCBS FM.
10. “Warm Summer Night” – Chic
This song takes me back to those fun dancing party times of 1979 when i was living in Florida. This is a slow dance sexy song that reeks of love. And from our local New York City boys Nile Rogers and Chic from their album “Risque.”
9. “Vehicle” – Ides of March
Pedal to the metal with a song from 1970 that gets you driving faster when you hear it! So be careful when listening to this 1970 song from Chicago’s Ides Of March.
8. “Boogie Nights” – Heatwave
Just one of those songs from 1977 that I never get tired of hearing and could listen to it over and over again.
7. “Mandolay” – La Flavour
This songs takes me back to late 1979 early 1980 when I was working in Miami Florida. A big huge dance song that never got played enough but should have been. Another great dance club song that takes me back to being young and stupid on the radio and hanging out in those crazy disco clubs of South Florida called Big Daddy’s.
6. “Wishing On A Star” – Rose Royce
Slow dance time for this one. And you’ll find me turning up the volume for this great sexy song from 1978. Rose Royce to me was the much better version than Beyonce’s re-made version!
5. “Drivers Seat” – Sniff n The Tears
A few weeks back I was in one of those discount chain stores and over their in house radio system I heard this song playing…Wow – totally forgot about this great rock top 40 song from 1979. A group from England Sniff n The Tears and this was the only song the group ever put out. I need to find a copy and play it on Turntable Tuesday!
4. “Reasons” – Earth Wind and Fire
Only the long version of this song to be played. Enough said about this fantastic melodic soul tune!
3. “Promises Promises” – Naked Eyes
One of my favorite songs from the 80′s decade. This song was originally done back in the 60′s by Dionne Warwick but Naked Eyes give it a great 80′s updated version of it. I never hear this song enough!
2. “Heaven Help Me” – George Michael
A beautiful song from 1985 that George did with an artist Deon Estus. A top 5 hit that no one plays anymore. Very pretty song from the 80′s that brings back great memories to me.
1. “I Do Love You” – Billy Stewart
This song takes me back to 6th grade growing up and listening to New York City radio. My parents made me go to social dancing at school and this was one of our slow dance tunes. Love it! We should play it more on WCBS-FM.
