If you’ve got two hands and a set of good ol’ fashioned tastebuds, chances are, you love a good burger. If you’ve got a pair of good ol’ fashioned ears, chances are, you’re probably a Springsteen fan.
But no matter how big of a fan of the Boss you are, you’re not as big of a fan as Hannah, the woman who runs the blog, Burgers and Bruce. And you probably would know he hates being called the Boss. Strike one.
Hannah, a long-time Bruce fan, started her blog before coming to see Bruce’s show in New York in July 2012 (her first post was a how-to for foodies in New York) and has kept up with the blog, the best hamburgers and Bruce Springsteen for the last year. That’s dedication.
Hannah said she is asked 2 questions on her blog all the time:
Have you ever met Bruce?
Do you know if he even likes burgers?
She said he of course loved burgers because he is a warm-blooded American, but chalked the first question up to a very slim possibility…until she discovered last weekend that she was staying in the same hotel as Bruce himself.
They ran into each other, and after pictures were taken, she asked him if he liked burgers at all.
His response?
“Pfff, what do you think!”
Obviously, the lyrics “where them hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day,” from “Back in the USA” is making a reprise 40 years later. Though, ironically, the two burger enthusiasts met in Belfast.
The two crossed paths again that night, and Bruce motioned Hannah over and began calling her “Burger Girl”–a nickname that will probably stick.
Hannah asked Bruce more about burgers, and Bruce said, “I used to eat a lot more burgers you know, when I was younger. But my shirt, it was getting tight!”
Bruce reminisced on the old days of burger-making saying, “A burger in 1950s America–it’s nothing like what you get now. A thin little patty, squirted with ketchup, and that’s the only type of burger there was. So I still have a fondness for a good diner burger. There’s an art to it, but it’s mostly lost. There’s only a few places that sell a really good diner burger.”
Bruce said most burger joints aren’t worth the trip but that, “Johnny Rockets does it pretty good.”
He then looked at her blog and said it was “pretty cool.”
Hannah said she hoped she did a good job representing the rest of the Springsteen fan-base when she met him.
“Forget the saying ‘you shouldn’t meet your heroes,’” she wrote. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more when I met mine.”
