Father’s Day is right around the corner, so the time to start thinking about gift ideas is way past due. While dad might appreciate a new mug or a new wallet, we all know what he really wants … new golf gear!
On the latest edition of the Sports Hub Golf Club, Hardy chats with Rory Doherty from the Golf & Ski Warehouse in Hudson, NH, who shares with us some Father’s Day gift ideas, and warns us about what not to get dad.
For instance, rather than getting Pops a new club, maybe you’re better off getting him a gift card so he can get properly fitted and be able to choose the exact club he wants.
“Instead of just walking in and picking out a driver and matching it up to his old specs, make sure you get him fit for that driver,” Doherty said.
So what are some good gift ideas?
“You can’t go wrong with apparel or a new pair of golf shoes. Dads are always gonna like that. Maybe get him some rain gear, or something he wouldn’t normally buy for himself that will come in handy. You also can never go wrong with golf balls,” Doherty added.

Next up on the Sports Hub Golf Club was Michael Whitmer of the Boston Globe. Whitmer has been at the Belmont Country Club in Belmont, MA this week covering the Constellation Senior Players Championship.
“There’s 81 players and 72 holes. It’s a great event and there’s no cut, so if you grew up and are familiar with guys like Jeff Sluman, Hale Irwin, Brad Faxon, Billy Andrade, Kenny Perry, Mark O’Meara, and Colin Montgomerie [it’s a great event]. There’s a lot of former major winners and some Hall of Famers as well,” Whitmer told Hardy. “Recognizable guys is the majority of the field.”
Next week, the world’s best golfers travel to Chambers Bay Golf Course in the state of Washington, where the U.S. Open comes to the Pacific Northwest for the very first time in its history.

Chambers Bay, which opened in 2007, is a links-style course that is sort of hard to get to, so many of the golfers on tour have yet to make it out there to play. Given their unfamiliarity with how to play it, it should be an interesting tournament to say the least.
Which golfers have the edge in this tournament? Is Dustin Johnson a favorite?
Whitmer helped give us a preview of what to expect at the U.S. Open and much more.

You’re probably familiar with daily fantasy football or daily fantasy baseball, but golf should not be forgotten.
A lot of us participate in Masters office pools, but DraftKings makes it really easy, and users of the site are about to compete in the biggest fantasy golf contest ever!
DraftKings professional Peter Jennings was a guest of the Sports Hub Golf Club on Saturday, a guy who has won a lot of money over the last four years, even taking home the 2014 Fantasy Baseball Championship and its $1 million prize.
DraftKings is running a Millionaire Maker tournament for the U.S. Open, (sign up here), so Jennings came on the show to give Hardy some advice on how to win.
As previously stated, the U.S. Open venue is unfamiliar to the majority of golfers on the tour, which obviously factors in to who Jennings will be picking for his six-player lineup.
It’s also a lengthy course, which narrows the field down even further.
“[Chambers Bay] is extremely long and has a lot of obstacles. It’s going to be your classic, extremely challenging U.S. Open course,” Jennings told Hardy.

He added, “Because of that, you have to factor in who you think can navigate a course like this well, and that’s basically going to dictate who you’re going to be putting into your daily fantasy roster.”
So what’s the best strategy to win, and who are some golfers that can win this tournament?
Jennings plans on making a ton of teams to get the maximum amount of exposure for different guys, similar to buying multiple Powerball tickets with different number combinations for the shot at the jackpot.
Bubba Watson, who can drive the golf ball a mile but sometimes has problems with accuracy, is somebody that fantasy expert Peter Jennings likes — especially for the cheap price of $9,400.
“Another guy I like who is a long hitter is Dustin Johnson, who is the fourth most expensive ($11,300). At the end of the day he’ll probably be my pick to win it out of everybody.”
