BOSTON (CBS) – It’s not too early to start thinking about Christmas, especially when it comes to helping out families in need.

On Friday morning, Mayor Tom Menino helped kick off the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program in the Boston area.

Every year, the program collects new, unwrapped toys to distribute to children who are less fortunate.

The goal is to get 100,000 toys in time for Christmas to help families in the Boston area. The Marines already have a warehouse full of boxes and bags of games, dolls, balls and more. Mayor Tom Menino hopes people will remember Toys for Tots is a volunteer group and every dollar and item donated goes to families.

“The economy may have gotten better, but there are still a lot of families who need our help,” Menino said.

If you’d like more information on how to donate or how to request a toy, go to ToysForTots.org.
