“With many absurd lyrics and heartfelt, but rigorous acoustic guitar playing, this is a frontman’s acoustic set at its best” - The Yorker (York, UK)

His album, The Brain. The Mind. The Heart, features tracks that center on the ups and downs of dating in NYC, making his set immediately relatable. And the best thing about it all? 8pm- Stephanie Rooker & Ben Tyree

Genre:  Soul, Jazz, Funk

For fans of:  Tuck & Patti, Joni Mitchell, Erykah Badu, Patty Griffin, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth

Stephanie Rooker’s soul-shaking sounds range from saucy R&B to innovatively revived funk to jazz-infused ballads.  She delivers songs of personal and societal empowerment with a voice that is at once evocative & healing.  Guitarist Ben Tyree is a performer and composer of virtuosic ability, infectious groove, and eclectic tastes. Born in Washington, DC and based in Brooklyn, he leads the abstract jazz-funk trio BT3 while expressing a more introspective side on his classically-influenced solo debut, Thoughtform Variations. That versatility has led to work with artists as diverse as Vernon Reid, Valerie June, Elliot Sharp, Burnt Sugar and The Arkestra Chamber, to name a few.

“Potently intelligent, pensively psychedelic...What’s most impressive is how aware Rooker is. With her brooding, sometimes sultry, sometimes wounded voice, her lyrics draw just as deeply from conscious hip-hop as from classic soul and funk … brings back memories of acts like Sandra St. Victor back in the 90s." - delarue, Lucid Culture

“Rooker’s repertoire of songs, some channeling Mississippi blues, some channeling emotive rock vixens like Janis Joplin, some others channeling jazz songstresses like Nina Simone, and then the more nuanced of contemporary genre-bending artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, are all authentic expressions of who Rooker truly is. Rooker’s sojourn to Ghana, her formal jazz training, and her reverence for hip-hop are authentic to her experience as a singer/song-writer.” - Boyuan Gao, The Revivalist/Okayplayer.com
