9pm- Gentleman Brawlers

Genre: Afropop
For fans of: TuNeYaRdS & Stereolab

Gentleman Brawlers are a funky 5-Piece band known for intense performances that walk the lines between slick songcraft, theatrical flair, and sonic experimentation. 2014 was a landmark year for the band, drawing critical acclaim in the New York and London Music Press. Brooklyn’s influential magazine The Deli listed them among their top 10 emerging New York bands, and Veteran BBC music writer Tom Robinson offered lavish praise for the group, noting the “silken female vocals” and “micron-precision drum grooves.” Robinson went on to call the ’Brawlers “a band that will take over the world” if they manage to pen the right song. Led visually by vocalist/dancer Becca Fox’s compelling sense of stagecraft, the Gentleman Brawlers are a sight & a sound you don't want to miss!

"A virtuoso live band of this calibre – grooving together like a beautifully engineered machine – topped off with silken female vocals...Liquid and inventive township style guitars, micron-precision drum grooves, yes… but what’s nailing it all together is a bassist with the effortless rhythmic flick of a Norman Watt-Roy or a James Jamerson."—BBC's Tom Robinson, Fresh On the Net, Fresh Faves  "It had me on the funky intro. Great fusion of afro-soul, and dreamy synth pop, driven by a tight bassline and interesting guitar riffs. Lots of elements coming together beautifully." - David Durant, Fresh On the Net, UK Weekly Listening Post

11pm- Shareef Keyes & the Groove

Genre: Funk
For fans of:  Thundercat, Janelle Monae, J Cole

Keyes' upcoming LP Cooking Something features a new sonic climate curated by Shareef Keyes and his older brother Glo. Similar to their work on the Electronic Fox EP, the sibling duo spent countless hours at their private family-owned studio in midtown Manhattan honing a new sound that mixes Motown and jazz-funk fused with a hard hip-hop undertone. The crooner hand-selected a team of NYC's finest instrumentalists and formed The Groove, a band of former students from Berklee College of Music and The Juilliard School, giving the Keyes brothers the ability to orchestrate live performance influenced, sample-free music.

“The multi-dimensional artist has developed his own sound that fuses P funk, hard hip-hop drums and melodic jazz chords. With his music, Shareef Keyes intends on using sonically pleasing songs to spread meaningful messages to consumers, hoping each and every listener learns and is inspired from the audio experience.” - The Source

9pm- Family of Trees

For fans of: Bill Frisell, Abigail Washburn, Crooked Still, The Wood Brothers
Genre: Electrified American Roots, Carbon Off-Set Jazz

Though their songs feel completely original and new, Family of Trees has grown straight out of the traditional American music and they don't shy away from working Bluegrass or Appalachian-Old-Time elements into their performances. It would be easy to say that their music is simply old-time-Appalachian-fiddle-tunes re-imagined with a bewitching drum beat and the occasional clawhammer banjo, BUT that would not account for the intermittent
Sam-Cooke-filtered interpretation of a turn-of-the-millennium prom-rock tune, OR the Link Wray song done in the style of Bill Frisell…and of course there’s the odd “yee-haw-free” Bluegrass spiritual. The unifying factor of their eclectic repertoire is the bluesy, timeless quality prevalent in all the songs. Led by bassist & banjoist Jared Engel, the band features Lily Henley on fiddle, Raphael McGregor on lap steel, and Nathan Ellman-Bell on drums.

11pm- Kidaudra

Genre: Electro-Pop
For fans of: Emily Haines, New Order, Depeche Mode

From her spellbinding sound to her top notch dance moves Kidaudra is a musician on the rise. Her reserved demeanor and soft voice are completely uncharacteristic of the charismatic, crowd quieting energy that is Kidaudra. Her music can be described as a new-wave, dystopian sound "reminiscent of Depeche Mode" accompanied by some house, industrial, noise, and R&B.

9pm- Daniel Amedee and Gold Light

Genre: Folk, Rock, Blues
For fans of: John Lennon, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison

Daniel Amedee is a New Orleans musician who plays an acoustic driven style of folk rock.  He’s has recorded two albums at Radical House Studios in San Francisco, CA with producer Charles Gonzalez (Coo Coo Birds, Blank Tapes). The first, "Themes From…" was released in May 2011 worldwide through Expat Records and the second, "Climbing." His records feature performances by percussionist Pat Spurgeon (Rogue Wave), Sylvain Carton (Beats Antique, John Vanderslice), and Charith Premawardhana (Mars Volta, Classical Revolution) as well as many other great musicians from the bay area.

“Daniel Amedee is a…singer from New Orleans. He describes his music as orchestral rock but I guess you might as well say it's folk? I don’t know. En tout cas, his debut album Themes From ... is beautifully dreamy, very well produced and overall pretty enjoyable! A fitting warm summer evening soundtrack.” - Hendrik Schimpler, Poule D'or

“New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, right? I guess this is why the city is often referred to as the most unique in America, as Daniel Amedee is a singer songwriter who demonstrates a real knack for writing gorgeous cinematic choral pieces, like Home And Heartfelt.”  - James Godwin, Informal Flick-Thru

“Daniel Amedee captures the soul of Cat Stevens in his incredible lyrics with a dynamic voice that can bellow low like that of Leonard Cohen or reach high like Elliot Smith. This is topped off with biting, epic music reminiscent of Arcade Fire. We are excited about the future of this talented New Orleans singer songwriter.” - Jeff Libby, CEO of Expat Records

10pm- Mindtroll

Genre: Post-Punk, Art-Punk

For fans of: B-52s, Le Tigre, Hunx

MINDTROLL is an art-punk trio featuring bass, accordion, drums, lots of strange lyrics and really good costumes. They crept up from the Gowanus Canal in early 2010 and have since spent their time honing their inscrutable sound, which is not unlike the angriest children's choir. In 2013, they released a sprawling collection of home recordings called “And That’s Just Some Of the Good Ones” where the song topics range from shopping at Williams-Sonoma to a battle between a Mega-Shark and a Crocsaurous. In 2016, they will release their next album “So Many Boyfriends”, which touches on more mature topics like how magic is real and not wanting to go to your friends’ wedding.

"It's like a magic trick - as a band" - Kathleen Hanna

"Brilliant, withering critiques of whatever is going on around them at any given moment, set to lo-fi, no wave-y, vaguely dance-y music" - Joel Tannenbaum (PunkNews.org)

FRIDAY 4/1
8pm- Hamin Reed

Genre: Acoustic
For fans of: Elliott Smith, Tool

The Way Station is proud to host Hamin Reed's residency, every Friday in April at 8pm.

Hamin Reed  [hay min reid] conveys love & hate, dark & light, everything between & everything outside, and what it means to the human psyche. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1984, he has been performing regularly solo or with different musicians from all over the world. Currently based in New York City.

"An acoustic artist who challenges the notions of wood, strings, and sentiment . . . Just as much a slap in the face of your "folky" values as it is an embrace of humanity song, craft, and experiment." - Jason Medina (Producer/Promoter, Transient Authority)

"Jeff Andrade's musical project Hamin Reed goes unparalleled in its diversity of sound and talent. His voice is warm and heartbreaking on ballads and he can rock harder than any hardcore musician I've seen. The lyrics are thought provoking and emotionally moving to whimsically entertaining. Hamin Reed crosses a plethora of genres with a facility that does not make their performances seem disjointed. It is to say that whilst traversing through a variety of styles, there exists a continuity that is never lacking. Hamin Reed is an act that defines what more acts in current state should be, talented, creative and entertaining." - Daniel Ouellette (Performance Artist, Daniel Ouellette and the Shobijin)

"Get inside the head and heart of one of the most evoking songwriters I have ever encountered. Genius insight to the world and who we are in it. I've been everywhere from Bluebird Cafe in Nashville to The Bitter End in NYC listening to hundreds of songwriters and none have been quite as prodigious as Jeff. He has inspired and ignited me as both a listener and a producer-songwriter. He has been an exquisite new addition to my ipod as well as an amazing addition to my life as a friend. Check him out. You will not regret it." - Nicole Berkowitz (Producer-songwriter, The Willow Tree)

The concert we have prepared is a unique and spectacular program showcasing the peerless writing and singing of New York-based vocalist, composer and bandleader Joe Benjamin, backed by his band "The Mighty Handful." Make no mistake, this is as heated and ferocious as any rock show, textured by the lush, harmonic soundscape of a full jazz orchestra.

"The whole group is full of risk takers and they push the limits of their creativity in ways that are still relatable." - NoDepression.com

"The band is a swinging stunner: Drums, Bass, Keys, four saxophones, two trumpets, two trombones and Joe Benjamin's perfectly phrased voice. When these musicians give themselves some freedom, they surely raise the roof!" - Passauer Neue Presse

9pm- Fingers DelRay

Genre: Blues, Boogie Woogie

For fans of: BB King, Mose Allison

Toby "Fingers" DelRey developed his hot stylings while a lad at the St. Ignatius Orphanage for Wayward Sinners. Sister Serenity, a crusty old nun with a musical bent, sensed the child's prodigious talent and, taking him under her wing, tutelaged him with a combination of Jelly Roll Morton, Johann Sebastian Bach and a strict regimen of dowsing the keyboard of the rectory piano -- a 1911 Flambe-Carbone upright -- with a solution of molasses and 190 proof corn liquor, setting it ablaze with the cherry of her White Owl and forcing the young genius to extinguish the flames with his speedy scales.

As Finger's remarked recently in a rare moment of verbal lucidity: "The blues is in my blood, the stride is in my soul and the fire is in my heart."

"Thanks a lot for sending me your album. I've been playing it on my show...lot's of good tracks!" - Norman Davis "Midnight Flyer" syndicated radio host (streamed from KYOU San Francisco, CA)

"One of the best piano players of the last ten years in the blues self release scene.......Fine style, great musical taste!" - Simone Bargelli (dj for "Rock n Blues Today", Italy)

Soul Bag (France-Le Magazine Francais du blues et de la Soul #198, Avril-Mai-Juin 2010) Toby "Fingers" Del Rey **** 4 stars!( Excellent, un disque sans déchet. Ou presque...)

"Kind of avante-garde blues with a touch of Chico Marx!" - David Bennett Cohen, pianist with Country Joe and the Fish, Elvin Bishop, Hubert Sumlin and Jimmy Vivino

10pm- Smith & 9th Ward

Genre: New Orleans Blues/Funk/Jazz
For fans of: New Orleans Jazz, Blues, Funk and Brass Band music

SMITH & 9th WARD is a combo in the New Orleans, funky and soulful tradition.  We channel the likes of Dr. John, James Booker, Allen Toussaint and Professor Longhair to bring you New Orleans grooves with a Brooklyn attitude.  We consist of members of the OUTER BOROUGH BRASS BAND and we love playing funky NOLA tunes, traditional jazz standards and low-down blues. SMITH & 9th WARD: New Orleans grooves with a Brooklyn attitude.

“Leyton-Brown’s physical stance at the keyboard comes closer to Joe Strummer than Dr. John, but she’s got skills that would make Mac Rebenack grin that trademark grin. Allison injected some old school stride into “Don’t Think Twice,” and her vocals on Crescent City classics like “Big Chief” and “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” were right on point. But it’s the little differences she brings that make her a not-so-secret weapon, like the Fender Rhodes sound she brought to the funky Scatassa original “BQEeze,” or the sizzling Clavinet vibe she conjured up toward the end of the second set that was straight out of Billy Preston’s “Outa Space.” Maybe the traditionalists might freak, but it’s a Brooklyn thing! They wouldn’t understand!” – J Hunter “Nippertown”

“After the bass drummer unexpectedly decided to lead a secondline into the bar room, which freaked out most of the people there, they came back in and kicked things up another notch. By this point, those of us who were dancing stopped caring about what the room full of lazy people thought, and we got up and got down in front of the band on a rousing finale.” – a fan
