11pm- Unigen

Genre: Pop

For fans of: Imogen Heap, The Postal Service, Peter Gabriel, The Knife

Unigen is Luke Folger's solo music project. Using his own custom one-man-band instrument, this guy is a true pioneer of electronic pop music. Fifteen years of experience in digital sound design, piano improvisation, and drumming in progressive rock and emo bands has led Luke to develop his own electronic music performance system - one that responds in real-time like an expressive instrument. The resulting songs are all-original, uplifting power-pop anthems, rich in melody, syncopation, and totally wild digital textures.

"…It's actually electronic music similar to what you might hear in a dance club, with pulsating sounds that can turn from delicate to soaring. In other words, not something you'd expect to hear in the subway." - LA Times 2012

While allegories dressed as science fiction may not be new to this world, they’ve never been more aesthetically pleasing than they are here. I mean, at bottom, once you strip away all the concept and metaphor, Rocket City is just a really, really great sounding record of awesome songs.”— Chris Michael, Eat That Guitar

TUESDAY 10/13

8pm- Deby Medrez Pier

Genre: Folk / Cabaret

Medrez's inspiring, haunting and melancholic tunes recall on echoes of the long forgotten Comedian Harmonistes, Andrew Bird and Nino Rota. Her songs are dedicated to universal and philosophical questions about life, judaism, love and Identity.

"Brooklyn-via-Mexico-City singer/songwriter Deby Medrez Pier depicts the final beauty of transience in her painterly songs... the musician conjures a sweetly fleeting seaside romance with a Hemingway-esque elegance while she conveys perhaps ephemeral personal frustration. Beyond its sheer prettiness, most striking about Pier's music is its ageless nature; these deeply felt, sparsely-constructed tracks may sound like they came from early twentieth-century Paris but they're just as vital in twenty-first-century New York."  - Zach Weg. They’re considered to be one of Belgium’s most promising indie acts, described as (sorry, but we need to give you an idea…) “a heavier take on ALT-J’s alt pop” & “Phoenix meets MGMT”)

Genre: singer-songwriter, art song, world music

For fans of:  Emiliana Torrini, Joanna Newsom, Kat Edmonson, Melodie Gardot

Sensuous melodies, unexpected lyrics, and a sophisticated international flavor – a seamless mix of many genres.  Pocket sized songs. Fleeting sounds, scarcely noticed. Paper clips, a dusty book, bright fish in time. Little songs like little shells.

“The lyrics have a cabaret or chanson quality to them, and as richly warbled by vocalist Vlada Brofman put me in mind of Melanie, Edith Piaf, or Carla Bruni.”

- Zachary Bos, The Wonder Reflex Blog, January 2015

"This sort of passion is the 'it' that one recognizes in the true troubadours whose minds can’t help but fill up with bursting melodies." - Travel Write Sing Blog, Luke Armstrong March 2015

"Channeling Peggy Lee singing in some interstellar speakeasy backed by Jack White, where the fashion of bowler hats and bow ties are mixed with Go Go boots and mini-skirts" - Rick Bowen, No Depression

"Lemme tell you it's a badly behaved set of tracks. It's a liquored up weekend whose hangover lasts well into the work week." - Anthony Fantano, The Needle Drop

"Moxie is an altogether different affair. Less a collection of songs – more a soundtrack to a wild burlesque show. Underwater, dreamy vocals, you hear reggae beats under New Orleans horns….bossa nova…honky tonk…Gypsy and swing….all in a late-night cabaret. " -John Dankosky, NPR

“The music is a little dirty, a little dangerous but a hell of a good time.” - Chip McCabe, CT.com

”Cheeky, and full of verve and swing... equal to anything Dr. John might have conjured up in his voodoo lair.” - Vincent Bator, Examiner.com

“With her strong writing style and sultry vocal delivery, Martin has you in the palm of her hand from track one.” - Troy Michael, Innocent Words Chicago

11pm- Lucas Brode's Spying

Genre: Jazz/rock

For fans of: Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Yo La Tengo

Combining influences as far reaching as the jazz-experimentalism of guitarists like Bill Frisell & Marc Ribot, the modern form & rhythmic sensibilities of composers like John Zorn & Steve Reich, the energy and feel of rock bands like Sonic Youth & Yo La Tengo, and the textural moods of artists like Mogwai & Brian Eno, Lucas Brode’s Spying creates exciting, yet subtle, modern music. Guitarist/composer Lucas Brode puts equal emphasis on both the melodic and rhythmic concepts of the consonance-dissonance relationship, while the group is rounded out by the stellar, groove-heavy backbone of Sam Wagner on drums and Isaac Jaffe on bass.

“Brode’s rapid finger-work brings to mind themes of time, growth and decay.” – Fecking Bahamas

“…find him prowling the back alleys of electric guitar playing.” – Here Comes the Flood
