FRIDAY 5/22
8pm- Arun Ramamurthy Trio

Genre: Carnatic Jazz
For fans of: Ravi Shankar, Shakti, Cross-over Jazz

The Arun Ramamurthy Trio (ART) performs Jazz Carnatica. Rooted in the style of the virtuoso violinist Dr. Mysore Manjunath, Arun brings a fresh approach to the age-old South Indian classical repertoire. The trio’s collaborative sound is driven by the propulsive rhythm section of drummer Sameer Gupta & and bassist Perry Wortman. The Carnatic canon is remixed in this seamless integration of styles as the group expands on the traditional compositions in explosive, improvisational flights of fancy. Arun’s original compositions pay homage to Carnatic rhythmic structures and rich tonalities while expanding the music with a modern jazz backbeat.

“…a beautiful, exotic, ear-opening listening experience.” (All About Jazz)

“…..a captivating and inspirational listening experience, worthy of the highest recommendation for multicultural music collections.” (Midwest Book Review)

“Ramamurthy joins the successful few who have melded jazz and traditional Indian music” (RootsWorld)

SATURDAY 5/23
8pm- Blackwater Mojo

Genre: Stomp Rock/Hill Country Blues
For fans of: RL Burnside, Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, the White Stripes, Bukka White, the Black Keys

Blackwater Mojo is a bare bones blues-rock duo from the heart of the Appalachian hill country. Well known for high energy performances, driving rhythms, and distinct sonic, this duo has no trouble filling the room in a way one would expect from a band twice their size. Not to be confused with preservationists, their unapologetic approach to American roots music makes them sound at once vintage and modern.

“The sultry voice of Erin Young, paired with the soulful resonator guitar skills of Seth Young, makes for an unforgettable sound. The dynamic husband/wife duo hail from Elkins, but have traveled all over, from the Appalachian mountains to southeast Asia and eastern Europe....Blackwater Mojo plays the kind of music that makes you want to get up and dance. The band describe their style as “rock de-evolved” and compare their sound to bands like The White Stripes and The Black Keys. While the Stripes and the Keys have predominantly male vocals, Blackwater Mojo leaves the vocal work to Erin, giving them a unique spin on blues rock. Their sound is certainly raw and edgy, with lyrics to match — “I’ve never seen the devil, but I’m pretty sure he’s seen me.” – Wendy Holdren, Beckley Register-Herald

10pm- A Birthday Homage to Bob Dylan
With The Zimmymen and The Wimmymen Performing
Blonde on Blonde

The Way Station continues its Tribute Series with A Birthday Homage to Bob Dylan on May 23, 2015 from 10PM to midnight. To honor Mr. Dylan’s birthday, and for your listening pleasure, we proudly present The Zimmymen and The Wimmymen, a merry band of latter-day Dylanologists, allied with (Brooklyn’s own) The Hollows, who will perform the album Blonde on Blonde in its entirety, track by track. This show will mark the 17th year that the Zimmy’s have put their unique spin on the work of Dylan, and the third consecutive year at The Way Station.

Blonde on Blonde was released in May of 1966, with many critics considering it the high water mark of Dylan’s fierce genius - the culmination of a creative frenzy that gathered speed with 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home, followed by Highway 61 Revisited, and climaxing with the third of his electric trilogy, Blonde on Blonde. Quieter albums followed – John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. Dylan never really got back to “that thin wild mercury sound” he achieved with a synod of Nashville session players in the winter and early spring of 1966.  No doubt The Zimmymen and The Wimmymen will stoke the flames of that mid-60s wildfire, and you’ll find out “what salvation must be like after a while.”

The Way Station Tribute Series has included The Zimmymen and the Wimmymen performing Dylan's 1975 release Blood on The Tracks as well as 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home; a Lou Reed Birthday Tribute that included seven bands reimagining the music of New York’s own proto-punk proselytizer; the warmly received tribute to The Byrds’ Sweetheart of the Rodeo, with five bands reinterpreting this seminal 1968 release in sequential order; and our Tom Waits Night, which included James Godwin’s Tom Waits puppet as master of ceremonies, three outstanding young singer songwriters with their personal takes on his words and music, and Big in Japan’s rousing two-hour paean to America’s most fearless keeper of the avant-garde.  And we can’t wait for our chance to honor 50 years of music from The Grateful Dead on August 19, 2015.

9pm- The Tumble

For fans of: Mandolin Orange, Gillian Welch, The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe

The Tumble is a roll around with the high and lonesome wail or the groove of a blues. We dig what is old. We make the new songs sound like we turned them up from the red dirt ground or the attic. This band strikes fine chords in the midst of clattering songs and pulls out sweetness from the minor keys.

Seafarers Unite is a collection of amateur and professional musicians based in NYC, but hailing from far and wide. WEDNESDAY 5/27
8pm- Alan Getto

Genre: Folk/Rock
For fans of: The Tallest Man on Earth, The Avett Brothers, Bob Dylan, Dr. Dog, Deer Tick, The Band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fahey, Tom Waits, The Mountain Goats, Nick Drake, Ryan Adams, Jeff Buckley

A lot of diverse influences and favorite artists, but it all condenses in to a Martin guitar and a voice, with something personal carried over. It's folk because it's an acoustic guitar, but it's rock because it's got balls.

"Alan has played many times at The Wheelhouse and always puts on a great show. He's an extremely talented singer/songwriter and will do well in the Brooklyn folk scene."  - Derek Sheiring, The Wheelhouse

9pm- Ball of Flame Shoot Fire

Genre: experimental rock
For fans of: Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, Steely Dan, and Neil Young

Ball of Flame Shoot Fire began as a teenage rock band in the suburbs of Pittsburgh before gradually morphing into an experimental ensemble that mixes jazz, rock, country, folk, and more. Since their formation, they have had the opportunity to share the stage with acts like Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer, Man Man, Mates of State, and Here We Go Magic. In 2010, the L Magazine named them one of the "Top 8 Bands to Watch" in New York City. Their newest album, 'Tis Only Wine, moves fluidly between synth-drenched new wave, psychedelic baroque pop, and avant-garde collages, all while maintaining their signature attention to songwriting and distinctive arrangements.

"Ball of Flame Shoot Fire insert themselves in a bizarre, originality-driven musical tradition with a poppy approach to songwriting, filtering the results with chaotic Captain Beefheart-ish influences. The outcome is charmingly soulful, slightly crooked, and entertainingly unpredictable orchestral pop." - The Deli

"Ball of Flame Shoot Fire is worth checking out." - Magnet

10pm- Ol' Savannah

Genre: Folk/Roots/Americana
For fans of: Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits

Ol’ Savannah is a Montreal Top 5 “Best Country/Folk Bands” as voted by CultMTL readers’ poll, 2013 & 2014. Led by songwriting duo, Speedy Johnson and Bartleby J. Budde, the 5-piece band plumbs the depths of old time mountain music and Americana roots music. Punk and metal fans also like Ol’ Savannah, strange as it may seem. That is to say, this ain’t your ordinary singer/songwriter stuff. Regardless of what you call it, Ol’ Savannah just tries to sing the truth!

“The right blend of folk and Americana!”

“[Ol’ Savannah] are a breath of fresh air with their slightly off kilter take on hillbilly music that blends so much more without ever losing sight of those roots.”

THURSDAY 5/28
8pm- Kenny Young and the Eggplants

Genre: Intergalactic folk-and-roll
For fans of: Fountains of Wayne, They Might Be Giants, Warren Zevon, The Kinks, Robyn Hitchcock, the Ramones, the Flaming Lips, Devo, the B-52s, Jonathan Richman, Violent Femmes, Ian Dury, Nick Lowe, and Life in a Blender.

Brooklyn’s inimitable Kenny Young and the Eggplants play intergalactic folk-and-roll songs about giant squirrels, scary bits of cheese, aliens, time travel, inebriated crime-solving birds, and malevolent washing machines, among other important topics. Their spaceship has frequently landed in the UK, where they won a prestigious Herald Angel Award for their performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, and where one of their live radio sessions was selected for a Best of the BBC Archives series. In NYC, the Eggplants received an Honorable Mention from Pop Matters for their performance at the CMJ Festival, and they were recognized with a Special Mention in a BMI songwriting competition for their monsterpiece, "The House at Creepy Lake." The most improbable honor for the band so far occurred in the pages of Time Magazine, where the author Alexander McCall Smith included the Eggplants in his "Short List" of favorite artistic discoveries. The Eggplants have recorded five albums, which have been played profusely on local station WFMU, and which have careened onto the Top 30 charts at various other college radio stations across North America.

"The Eggplants mix brainy, funny lyrics with a fine sense of what makes pop music wonderful." -- Dr. Demento

"Gentle insanity with irresistible tunes" -- The Herald

“The naivete Kenny wears on his sleeve is genuine - think of an East Village Brian Wilson, without the money but still tilted in his own wacked-out way.” -- Village Voice

“Giving eloquent voice to the multifaceted neuroses of prolonged adolescence” -- The New York Times

11pm- Sean Kershaw

Genre: Rockabilly, jump blues, honkytonk
For fans of: Hasil Adkins, CCR, Southern Culture on the Skids, Link Wray, White Stripes, Homer Henderson

From growling gutteral Link Wray-style rock'n'roll to sweet country ballads, Sean Kershaw handles it all with a telecaster and a Kick drum made from an old suitcase. This is dancin' around the room, cryin' in your beer, shootin' tin cans off the fence kinda music. Guaranteed to please deep down in your soul and a few other parts as well.

"Baritone country crooner Sean Kershaw‘s new album The Aussie Sessions is arguably his best – and he’s been writing good songs for a long time. His first New York band, the Blind Pharaohs, hung out on the shadowy side of rockabilly. Since then, Kershaw has gone in more of a classic honkytonk and western swing direction with his band the New Jack Ramblers. This one goes deep into the noir, from Texas to Tennessee – except that it was recorded in that hotbed of edgy music, Melbourne, Australia." (Lucid Culture Dec 2013)

8pm- Duckspeak

Genre: Indie Rock
For fans of: Built to Spill, The Mountain Goats

Duckspeak is a four-piece indie rock band from New York City. Combining folk, pop, and 90's rock influences, Duckspeak juxtapose upbeat music with reflective lyrics about memory. You'll dance and think about how you can never escape your past. It'll be a good time, ultimately.
"Whilst there is a wistful whimsical air to Duckspeak, there is equally some solid granite that attracts the ears. The morose, reflective timbres are imbued with
luxurious layers of instrumentation as electric powered kit meets with
acoustic sound generators to provide the audience with folds of cotton
in which to enjoy the compositions." ~ Emerging Indie Bands

9pm- Gretchen & The Pickpockets

Hailing from Durham, New Hampshire, Gretchen & the Pickpockets is a band whose unique blend of rock, jazz, and soul - coupled with an insatiable appetite for playing shows in New England and elsewhere - has gotten them a great deal of attention in a short amount of time.

“...I came across a band that has to be one of the most unique musical groups I’ve heard in years; and that is no exaggeration.” — Danielle Cooper, TBubble

“I loved Gretchen and the Pickpockets debut EP, “Stop,” which was released in 2013. Loved it. I’m so happy they didn’t stop there. Why? Because I LOVE their debut self-titled full-length. This is one of the most promising young bands on the Seacoast, and (I seem to say this a lot – which is testament to the quality that exists here … ) one of the most promising young bands in existence today. Anywhere. Big on rock, big on soul, big on fun. Those are the keys to an excellent band, and an excellent record.” — Christopher Hislop, Seacoast Online
