Many instruments will show up at their gigs: fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, harmonica, sometimes lap steel and piano, as well as a pared down drum kit that helps them rock and roll. “Self-identifying as an ‘experimental’ folk singer, Vakni and her seven member band weave electronic orchestrations through tight acoustic melodies. Her voice is untethered, soulful, and she jumps from chest to heady falsetto with fluid grace. Her vocal dexterity pays homage to the Joni Mitchells and James Taylors before her. It is clear that there is an audience for Vakni, and the audience wants an encore.” - Benjamin Lindsey, Discovery Magazine

10pm- Dawn Drake & ZapOte

Genre: Afro-Latin Funk
For fans of: Antibalas, Budos Band, ESG, Jamiroquoi, Chico Mann, Cumbiagra, English Beat, Police

Taking its name from a luscious fruit in Cuba known as "ZapOte", this band is an original Funk Latin Afro-Beat band lead by Dawn Drake, bassist/conguera/singer/songwriter and composer, who manages to wear several hats while setting the scene with her own brand of cool. Her original music takes the listener and dancer into a zone where House, Funk, Afro-beat, Samba, Afro-Cuban rhythms and Jazz are right at home. Poetic lyrics spread messages of universal consciousness, delivered with heartfelt vocals, and are joined with the irresistible grooves of Latin percussion, funky bass, swinging horn lines and improvisation.

BAM CAFE LIVE  –Darrell McNeill
"Dawn Drake and her band ZapOte are at the beginnings of a fascinating journey to enthusiastically bridge chasms of cultural and gender disconnect that plagues so much of pop music's body politic. To hear them is to imagine early period jam sessions between Laura Nyro and Carole King with Sly Stone and Sergio Mendes sitting in. Theirs is a playfully intense dynamic that needs to be seen more."

-Darrell McNeill, Black Rock Coalition Director of Operations & CURATOR of BAM Café LIVE, Brooklyn Academy of Music GO MAGAZINE  –Jenny Lazar
"Dawn contributes heavy Afro-Caribbean licks on congas, bongós and Brazilian caixa as a partial list...and it's no amateur hour..."

Dawn Drake  –Meewsic Records
"Cuban, African & South American styles mesh together into delicious jazz/pop fusion; a wonderful backdrop for Dawn's sassy vocals. She also arranged the horns (excellent job), played bass and did all the percussion; a truly multi-talented performer!" Brian Fox, Meewsic Records

Jules Bistro Presents Dawn Drake  –Jules Bistro
"This saucy debut by soul sistah Dawn Drake is an incredible gift to the world of world music! She skillfully weaves together her bold poetic lyrics, melodic vocals, and a fusion of danceable rhythms performed by herself and a very talented band of musicianados. You'll love the horns, the deep bass, the compelling percussion..."

8pm- Emily Barnes

Genre: Contemporary Folk/ Singer-songwriter
For fans of: Norah Jones, Ingrid Michaelson, Paolo Nutini, Brandi Carlile

A standout on the northwest jersey music scene, Barnes writes and sings songs that belie her age. Songs of love found and lost, of hope and disappointment. Armed with an acoustic guitar and an array of imaginative tattoos Emily is no old school folkie but she’s no pop princess either. Instead Emily is true to her intuition, writing from the heart and turning heads with a voice that cuts to the bone. Think early Nora Jones with a funkier fashion sense.

9pm- Nick Sumner

Genre: Singer/Songwriter, Rock
For fans of: Ray Lamontagne, Biffy Clyro, Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley

Nick weaves haunting lyrics and graceful melodies, bringing them to life through emotionally charged performances. Part of what makes his set an experience, more than simply a show, is his ability to take the audience with him to the places that inspire the music. He has been to SXSW and shared the stage with Slash when he fronted a hard-rock trio, but finds no greater fulfillment than to forge a bond between himself and his audience.

10pm- Don Paris Schlotman

Genre: Downbeat alternative space rock
For fans of: Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Bill Callahan

Don Paris Schlotman, the bass player and co-founder of Sky Captains of Industry, is a Brooklyn musician whose solo recordings span a variety of genres and styles. He was born in a freak accident, the seventh son of a lightning bolt and a mountain lion. He plays the bass like some people fall over, and his artificial left eye can see 4 seconds into the future. Don makes art, plays and writes music, wrestles conundrums, falls down sometimes, and is a cat lady in training. The reports of his wizardry are greatly exaggerated.

“This is Don in a Lou Reed meets Johnny Cash mode, with the banjo and reverberating whistling adding to a sense of understated, yet mysteriously present, anarchism. It’s a kind of mix of Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and “Perfect Day”, with a bluegrass ketchup.” —  Eric Hathaway, Sometime in Long Island City

Genre: folk, country, Americana
For fans of: Neil Young, Whiskeytown, Townes Van Zandt, Big Star

Melbourne, Australia songwriter Ben R. Mackie “mixes folk and country inspired sounds with a distinctively Melbournian soul” (Beat Magazine) to create music that is stripped back, delicate but rough-around-the-edges: An outsider’s slant on the Americana genre. No stranger to the world of live music, Mackie has been performing in bands since he was just a kid, along the way taking out many of Australia’s finest music prizes (including the country’s largest alternative radio station Triple J’s “Top Song” competition). Recording deals followed, as did tours with some of the nation’s finest musical acts.

In late 2013, Mackie (now 26) decided it was time for a change of scenery. Armed with his Hummingbird, harmonica and a deep love for the rich history of American music, he left behind the comforts of his band and city for a new beginning in Brooklyn, New York.

9pm- Vienna D'Amato Hall

Genre: folk-rock
For fans of: Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Leonard Cohen, Robert Plant & Allyson Krauss.

Vienna’s music was first inspired by traditional, American Folk songs as well following the lyrical genius of her fellow Canadian, Leonard Cohen. For fans of: I am the lead singer of Electric Six. But you could say I have some Roky Erikson, Tom Waits, Talking Heads in me.

Dick Valentine is best known as the frontman for Electric Six, but in the last few years he has been known to play solo acoustic sets both in the US and the UK.  He has two solo albums, “Destroy The Children” and “Halloween Fingers” and his set consists of a healthy mix of songs from those albums as well as Electric Six songs done acoustically. Requests are taken, drinks are consumed, and occasionally audience members can come up and sing backing vocals. Though originally from Detroit, Valentine has lived in Prospect Heights for 7 years and is always excited about being able to walk 2 blocks to his gig at The Way Station.  Valentine is available for private parties, religious ceremonies and also charges a lofty consulting fee in his role as a private consultant.

“With many absurd lyrics and heartfelt, but rigorous acoustic guitar playing, this is a frontman’s acoustic set at its best”  -- The Yorker (York, UK)
