7:30pm- Art Talks Brooklyn
An informal speaker series highlighting the importance of Brooklyn art initiatives and how they positively impact our community. Monthly, we invite three speakers, each allotted 15 minutes, to talk about their history, mission and creative public programming. Learn, network and share ideas for a better Brooklyn.

MoCADA, Isissa Komada-John, Exhibitions Director

MoCADA was established in 1999 as Brooklyn’s first and only museum dedicated to the creation and interpretation of contemporary Black arts and culture. Fifteen years later, MoCADA has expanded from a grassroots startup with a social justice mission to an internationally recognized arts institution, featured in the New York Times, Time Out New York, The Huffington Post, ARTINFO and countless other publications. The museum has established a reputation for cutting edge exhibitions and programs that cross artistic disciplines, creating opportunities for emerging artists and cultivating the next generation of cultural producers. MoCADA has produced over 60 exhibitions and 500 public programs, expanding from the museum’s main gallery to the streets, parks, schools, and public housing of Brooklyn and beyond, while challenging the boundaries of the traditional museum to increase public access to the arts.

9pm- Chris Sherman

Genre: psychedelic folk
For fans of: Donovan, George Harrison, Syd Barrett

Chris Sherman, singer/ guitarist/ composer of Brooklyn psych rock band Sky Picnic, weaves a series of pastoral and pensive acid-folk songs on the more melancholy side.

"Opener "Time Must Have Stopped" is the most straightforward track here, and shows Sherman's much hinted at Donovan influence more strongly than anything we've heard from him yet - a gentle psychedelic folk song with a strong melody, and a graceful sitar accompaniment weaving in and out.” - http://active-listener.blogspot.com/2013/03/chris-sherman-sandalwood-haze-review.html

“Sherman keeps the waking edge billowing and free of sticky inertia. Like everything else here, it’s a rich smoky mix of the earthy and the ethereal, both sides working together for escape in tandem.”-

10pm- Martina Fiserova

Genre: folk jazz
For fans of: Joni Mitchell, Lizz Wright, Kate Bush, Tracy Chapman

An experienced singer from Prague, Czech republic, performing her original music. Martina Fiserova has been surrounded by musicians since the moment she was born. It took her many years to realize and accept the fact that she was becoming a musician herself. After a decade spent gaining experience on the Prague Jazz Scene (from blues and fusion oriented bands to collaborations with international bands, backing up rock stars and diving into silence with music therapy), she decided to get her ass kicked by New York City. Come check out her unique songwriting approach and intimate yet emotional vocal performance.

“Her voice is graceful, and her phrasing and delivery are right on tempo.” - James Nadal, All About Jazz

“Her biography is impressive. (...) Jazz pop? Folk jazz? Either way it's cool, and if this is the sort of stuff she is capable of writing then I hope there is more on the way.” - Tony Emmerson, Prague Jazz Blogspot

Stampfel then assembled The Inevitable Breakups in 1999 who became beloved sons of NYC with their catchy, crunchy power-pop. His current band, At The Moment, performs stripped-down, heartfelt pop-rock set aloft by Stampfel’s unique voice.  Stampfel is also a current member of Michael T and the Vanities.

“…what Stampfel is doing is putting his own stamp on an oldschool style, tuneful verses working their way up to irresistibly catchy resolutions when the choruses hit.” – New York Music Daily

“the Monte Carlo EP has a fun, romantic manner that is definitely attention worthy and most importantly; relatable. Stampfel’s voice is simply radiant and shines through in every song.” – Pop-break.com

“His latest EP, Monte Carlo, is a foundational trio of summery pop songs that shimmer in the way that only great songs can.” – BrooklynRocks

11pm- Sean Cronin's Very Good

Very Good. In these times, where irony and passivity reign, we must create ways of saying things without actually saying them. Thus: this band is Very Good.

It’s issues like this that Sean Cronin's Very Good addresses, and consequently questions the importance of; all while creating musical tapestries that create a journey through styles and various states of lucidity. Sean Cronin is the band’s leader, and his musical life is a testament to the diversity of this project. Cronin was raised on Country, trained in Classical, steeped in Punk Rock, and brought to maturity as a Jazz musician. Similar tales have shaped all of the members of the band, and Very Good is Cronin’s place to conglomerate such stories into song. Some inspirations include Steve Reich, Bjork, Leonard Cohen, and the Band. The band’s malleable nature enables it to fit into any circumstance – be it a dance party or a theatre. Whether they’re performing in the dark, singing a capella to announce that “the show will start soon”, or joined by a marching band that emerges from the audience, Very Good is always full of color, spontaneity, and madness. Very good, indeed.

Under The Sun in particular stands out as a shining testament to Rob's talent. Well done!” ~Ben Vaughn- Record Producer and Host of "The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn" radio program...

FRIDAY 11/28
8pm- Mike Herz

Genre: Folk/ Singer-songwriter
For fans of: Josh Ritter, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan

Raised in rural Northwest, New Jersey, Mike grew up amongst fertile farmlands and majestic mountains. So naturally, as a teenager his music of choice was rap. Why you ask? The words. There was poetry and passion there, and it resonated. Some years later Mike discovered the songs of Bob Dylan, and after listening to those words his heart clinically stopped for 3 minutes. While dead he saw a heavenly blinding light and returned to Earth with the understanding that simply a guitar and words could alter the universe. Folk music hit home. So words were written, chords were learned and songs were born. Songs sung in a deep voice that rattles around in your head long after the music ends. Songs that make you think, but don't trip you up and leave you realizing something you already knew.

“New Jersey singer-songwriter Mike Herz understands the power of words, and on “Overgrown” he presents 14 songs that recount facets of the human condition with some skill.” – Leicester Bangs Review

"I listen to a lot of independent CDs and yours really surprised me with its point-of-view, the fresh honest lyrics, the remarkable turn-of-phrase, one right after another. Those are important songs.” – Don Lowe, Towne Crier

9pm- Hamin Reed

Genre: Acoustic
For fans of: Elliott Smith, Tool

Hamin Reed  [hay min reid] conveys love & hate, dark & light, everything between & everything outside, and what it means to the human psyche. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1984, he has been performing regularly solo or with different musicians from all over the world. Currently based in New York City.

"An acoustic artist who challenges the notions of wood, strings, and sentiment... Just as much a slap in the face of your "folky" values as it is an embrace of humanity song, craft, and experiment." -- Jason Medina (Producer/Promoter, Transient Authority)

"Jeff Andrade's musical project Hamin Reed goes unparalleled in its diversity of sound and talent. His voice is warm and heartbreaking on ballads and he can rock harder than any hardcore musician I've seen. The lyrics are thought provoking and emotionally moving to whimsically entertaining. Hamin Reed crosses a plethora of genres with a facility that does not make their performances seem disjointed. It is to say that whilst traversing through a variety of styles, there exists a continuity that is never lacking. Hamin Reed is an act that defines what more acts in current state should be, talented, creative and entertaining." -- Daniel Ouellette (Performance Artist, Daniel Ouellette and the Shobijin)

"Get inside the head and heart of one of the most evoking songwriters I have ever encountered. Genius insight to the world and who we are in it. I've been everywhere from Bluebird Cafe in Nashville to The Bitter End in NYC listening to hundreds of songwriters and none have been quite as prodigious as Jeff. He has inspired and ignited me as both a listener and a producer-songwriter. He has been an exquisite new addition to my ipod as well as an amazing addition to my life as a friend. Check him out. You will not regret it." -- Nicole Berkowitz (Producer-songwriter, The Willow Tree)

10pm- Dawn Drake & ZapOte

Genre: Afro-Latin Funk
For fans of: Antibalas, Budos Band, ESG, Jamiroquoi, Chico Mann, Cumbiagra, English Beat, Police

Taking its name from a luscious fruit in Cuba known as "ZapOte", this band is an original Funk Latin Afro-Beat band lead by Dawn Drake, bassist/conguera/singer/songwriter and composer, who manages to wear several hats while setting the scene with her own brand of cool. Her original music takes the listener and dancer into a zone where House, Funk, Afro-beat, Samba, Afro-Cuban rhythms and Jazz are right at home. Poetic lyrics spread messages of universal consciousness, delivered with heartfelt vocals, and are joined with the irresistible grooves of Latin percussion, funky bass, swinging horn lines and improvisation.

-Darrell McNeill, Black Rock Coalition Director of Operations & CURATOR of BAM Café LIVE, Brooklyn Academy of Music "Dawn Drake and her band ZapOte are at the beginnings of a fascinating journey to enthusiastically bridge chasms of cultural and gender disconnect that plagues so much of pop music's body politic. To hear them is to imagine early period jam sessions between Laura Nyro and Carole King with Sly Stone and Sergio Mendes sitting in. Theirs is a playfully intense dynamic that needs to be seen more."

GO MAGAZINE  –Jenny Lazar
"Dawn contributes heavy Afro-Caribbean licks on congas, bongós and Brazilian caixa as a partial list...and it's no amateur hour..."

Brian Fox, Meewsic Records
"Cuban, African & South American styles mesh together into delicious jazz/pop fusion; a wonderful backdrop for Dawn's sassy vocals. She also arranged the horns (excellent job), played bass and did all the percussion; a truly multi-talented performer!"

Jules Bistro Presents Dawn Drake  –Jules Bistro
"This saucy debut by soul sistah Dawn Drake is an incredible gift to the world of world music! She skillfully weaves together her bold poetic lyrics, melodic vocals, and a fusion of danceable rhythms performed by herself and a very talented band of musicianados. You'll love the horns, the deep bass, the compelling percussion..."

“Tucker is bloody good at almost anything he touches. There are a lot of post-genre acts out there who say that no style or sound is off the table, but few make the transitions in between as well as Elijah Tucker.  “Saturn” is [like] a good party: running with a life of its own but never quite out of control.” Wildy Haskel, Wildy’s World

10pm- Sally

Genre: Indie Pop
For fans of: The Smiths, Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Magnetic FieldsSally is a Brooklyn- and Queens-based indie pop band whose sugary, witty pop songs evoke The Smiths, the Six-ties, and tons of romantic angst. Hooky song structures hide forlorn, honest lyrics. The group consists of song-writer Jordan Cooper (guitar, accordion, back-up vocals), Kristen Gudsnuk (lead vocals, glockenspiel, melodica, tambourine), and Will Kastner (drums and percussion).
Sally originated from a series of songs written by Jordan from the perspective of a fictitious, lovelorn girl. Their debut EP, We Are In A Car, was released in July 2012.

“Sally is full of indie-pop fun. Eloquently composed . . . [We Are In A Car] rides on the strength of Gudsnuk’s honest vocals and Cooper’s cheery songwriting.” —Ben Anshutz, Turnstyle Music Group

“We Are In A Car, though accounting the ending of relationships, has a simple, childlike air, thanks to Gudsnuk’s light vocals and the band’s use of unconventional instruments.”—The QueensTribune

“Charming tween-pop. . . .While all of Sally’s songs chronicle the ‘perils’ and frustrations of relationships, . . . Kristen Gudsnuk . . . chronicles these tales in an innocent and childlike voice while the other members of the band create a catchy indie-pop backdrop, which is complete with accordion, glockenspiel, kazoo, and melodica.” —Brooklyn Rocks
