THURSDAY 10/16
8pm- Rachel Schain
Genre: Singer/Songwriter
For fans of: Dar Williams, Barenaked Ladies, Elvis Costello
Rachel Schain brings a jolt of caffeine to the coffeehouse, pairing strikingly honest lyrics with an unwavering rock-edged soprano voice. She uses pop melodies to break down emotional walls and then sings from her heart straight to yours. Her playful sense of humor electrifies her acoustic rock sound and brings a smile to cope with painful subjects. Influenced by OK Go, Dar Williams, Tally Hall, Elvis Costello, Barenaked Ladies and Tori Amos, her songs - a hodgepodge of familiar rock forms put through the wringer - stay with you long after you listen.
“That disarming alacrity, in addition to an ear for melodic pop and her distinctive, full and undeniably rocking soprano, is what elevates Rachel Schain’s simple compositions so far above the average coffeehouse acoustic singer-songwriter set.” - PopMatters.com
“Schain's appeal is in her catchy melodies and clever lyrics...these are not your average folk-pop songs. And while several of the songs are about romantic relationships, they're love songs for girls who don't spend most of their time obsessing over boys (and the people who love them).” - DEArtsInfo.com

10pm- Sean Kershaw and the New Jack Ramblers
Genre: Honkytonk, rockabilly, country, jump blues
For fans of: Johnny Cash, Southern Culture on the Skids, Merle Haggard, Reverend Horton Heat, Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys
Hi-Octane Honkytonk is what Sean Kershaw calls it. Google "Brooklyn Country" and his name will come up, way up front in a now-crowded field. What's fer damn sure is it ain't that overproduced pablum they're putting on the radio nowadays. SK&NJR reach back to country's roots and throw in a healthy dose of Mr Kershaw's punk rock background to serve up some hard drivin', butt-shakin' dirty Southern boogie that will have you clearin' the tables to make way for a dance floor! With enough original material (and a few choice covers) to play for hours, Sean Kershaw & the New Jack Ramblers will leave you worn out and screaming for more!
On debut CD Coney Island Cowboy, "Love the great honkytonk swing of this CD. Kinda modern, even punk outlaw sounding...great stuff!" -BRCFP 2009
"Honkytonk Brooklyn-style from Sean Kershaw is what this genre needs!" -Playgirl Magazine 2007
"Baritone country crooner Sean Kershaw‘s new album The Aussie Sessions is arguably his best – and he’s been writing good songs for a long time. His first New York band, the Blind Pharaohs, hung out on the shadowy side of rockabilly. Since then, Kershaw has gone in more of a classic honkytonk and western swing direction with his band the New Jack Ramblers. This one goes deep into the noir, from Texas to Tennessee – except that it was recorded in that hotbed of edgy music, Melbourne, Australia." (Lucid Culture Dec 2013)

11pm- Martina Fiserova
Genre: folk jazz
For fans of: Joni Mitchell, Lizz Wright, Kate Bush, Tracy Chapman
An experienced singer from Prague, Czech Republic, performing her original music. M.F. has been surrounded by musicians since the moment she was born. It took her many years to realize and accept the fact that she was becoming a musician herself. After a decade spent gaining experience on the Prague Jazz Scene (from blues and fusion oriented bands to collaborations with international bands, backing up rock stars and diving into silence with music therapy), she decided to get her ass kicked by New York City, especially due to her having a serious affair with the devilish Charette and his "reliably burning" chops.
“Her voice is graceful, and her phrasing and delivery are right on tempo.” - James Nadal, All About Jazz
“Her biography is impressive...Jazz pop? Folk jazz? Either way it's cool, and if this is the sort of stuff she is capable of writing then I hope there is more on the way.” - Tony Emmerson, Prague Jazz Blogspot

11pm- Strangled Darlings
Genre: Americana Doom Pop
For fans of: Tom Waits, the Beastie Boys, William Faulkner, Angry David Byrne, Violent Femmes
Strangled Darlings brings a punk intensity to their live show. Taking a cello and making it a hip hop bass. Taking mandolin and slapping it like a stubborn mule. The Portland based duo has been creating original tunes since 2009 and breaking the mold for what hipsters consider indie music. They bring a literary intelligence and political punch to their songs. Their song material varies widely to cover a blend of folk, hip hop, jazz and Americana with inspiration coming from: witchcraft in the Civil War, the morality of Somali piracy and the media impact of Neil Armstrong.
“Strangled Darlings are one of the few folk duos that deftly mix genres, emotions and observations to not only share what they’re thinking, but help you better clarify your own impressions. Isn’t that what great music is all about?”
- American Songwriter
“Imagine Tom Waits and Jack White drinking in a Romani dive bar, then haphazardly mixing DNA. That miracle baby might resemble PDX art-folk duo Strangled Darlings” - Willamette Week
“Portland’s Strangled Darlings bring punk intensity to folk pop and completely bust the mold, creating smart, irreverent tunes using classic acoustic folk instrumentation paired with rough, impassioned vocals. Think of it rather like the Clash with an indie Northwestern American aesthetic.” -Pop Matters
