NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Granby High School student is among those chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars for 2014.

Nationwide, 141 high school seniors received the honor based on outstanding academic achievement, leadership, citizenship, and service to school and community. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced this year’s scholars on May 5, and Anne H. Dorsey is one of three students selected from Virginia.

According to a Department of Education news release, 18-year-old Duncan is involved in numerous clubs and extracurricular activities and volunteers in the Hampton Roads community. She also scored a perfect 36 on the ACT college entrance exam.

The program started in 1964. Since 1983, the honorees were asked to name their most influential teacher, who receives a personal letter from the Education Secretary. Dorsey named Marija Raskovic, an AP Chemistry and AP/IB Physics teacher at Granby.
