On day five of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, a vigorous and unstable cold front, associated with an un-seasonally deep low pressure system moving across southern England, upset plans for racing today. Although mean wind speeds for much of the day were not forecast to be particularly severe, the possibility of sustained squalls of 33-34 knots was a serious concern for race officials.
As a result racing was abandoned for the dayboat classes in White Group and also for the smaller boats in Black Group, while Sunsail F40s raced without spinnakers. It turned out to be a frustrating morning for many, with big holes in the wind between the showers, along with mammoth wind shifts. Between 1340 and 1350 the wind at Lymington Starting Platform varied from nine to 33 knots, shifting by almost 40 degrees. Over the next 10 minutes it held a more constant direction, but rapidly strengthened to an average of 27 knots, with peak gusts of over 42 knots.
The squalls moved quickly up the Solent, with the first big gusts hitting Cowes just after 1400, as the leaders in IRC Class 4 were closing the finish. Flogging sails could be seen on boats that weren't ready for the sudden change in conditions, while those who were prepared to quickly change gear for the stronger winds powered past, making good gains.
In gusts of 35 knots, David Franks' JPK 10.10 Strait Dealer took line honours, 17 seconds ahead of Peter Hodgkinson and Sarah Bailey's X-362 Xcitable. It had been a challenging race with the wind shifting 180 degrees and reducing to as little as eight knots at times.
The tightest race of the day was in IRC Class 0, which was competing for the day's biggest trophy, the New York Yacht Club Challenge Cup. While Peter Cunningham's Powerplay finished 1m 59 seconds ahead of another TP52, Johnny Vincent's Pace, she must give Pace 29 seconds per hour on handicap.
They took more than four and a half hours to complete the 31.4-mile course, with the crews working hard to keep the powerful boats sailing at their optimum in the changing conditions, especially on the gusty beat to the finish. When the handicaps were worked out, Pace took the cup by a margin of just one second.
Tomorrow will see more action on the water, including 70ft MOD70 one-design trimarans and IMOCA 60 monohulls competing in separate races around the Isle of Wight for the Artemis Challenge celebrity charity race. -- Rupert Holmes

A two-way tie at the top of the 470 Men/Mixed leaderboard perfectly reflects the matching performance of Simon Sivitz Kosuta/Jas Farneti (ITA) and Kevin Peponnet/Baptiste Berthier (FRA) at the 2012 470 Junior European Championship.
They have been neck and neck through the qualification series, and with the first 3 races of the final series now completed these two look set to compete for the Championship title showdown. They are both on 24 points each, with Alex and George Kavas (GRE) still in fighting contention in third overall.
In the 470 Women event, before protest there was a "super tie break" with a three way tie between Ewa Szczesna/Irmina Mrozek Gliszczynska (POL), Maëlenn Lemaître/Aloïse Retornaz (FRA) and Annika Bochmann/Elisabeth Panuschka (GER) on 22 points each. The Polish had been in control since the start of the Championship, but it all changed today, when they were disqualified from race 9.
Racing took place in a very shifty breeze which ranged from 14-18 knots for races 7 and 8, easing off for race 9
The Race Committee scheduled three races today in anticipation of a forecast of light conditions for tomorrow, but Sivitz Kosuta was ever confident saying, "I don't think there won't be races, because on Garda every day comes some wind."

Grand Slam Series Starts This Week In Chicago
Chicago, Illinois, USA: On Friday, August 17th the Chicago Match Racing Center (CMRC) will begin competition in its August Grade 2 Invitational, with 11 teams from 7 nations slated to do battle through Sunday in what is the first of four events in the US GRAND SLAM Series. This series features ISAF Grade 2 match racing in four consecutive events: the Grade 2 Invitational, held at CMRC over August 17-19; the Detroit Cup, held August 23-25 at Bayview YC; the Knickerbocker Cup, held at Manhasset Bay YC over August 30 - September 2; and the Oakcliff International, held over September 5-9 at Oakcliff Sailing in Oyster Bay, NY.
This is the second year for the GRAND SLAM Series, where overseas teams not only have the ability to compete in a coherent series of events that maximizes their travel value to the US, but also provides opportunities to earn points on the ISAF World Match Race Ranking List, qualifies them for invitations to higher grade events on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT), and gives the overall series winner an automatic invitation to the Long Beach YC's Congressional Cup in 2013.
Leading the pack at 15th on the ISAF Ranking List is one of several 'young guns' in this year's event: 23-year old Taylor Canfield from the US Virgin Islands.
But the next down at 16th in the Ranking List, 21-year old Jordan Reece from Australia, would also have to be considered a favorite, having spent this summer as an intern at CMRC and surprised many last month at the AWMRT Chicago Match Cup where he placed second to winner Bjorn Hansen.
Other Down Under teams include fellow Australians David Gilmour and Peter Nicholas, ranked 36 and 69th, respectively; and 70th-ranked Josh Junior from New Zealand. The only European entry in the field is Denmark's 22nd-ranked Nicholai Sehested, and Peter Wickwire will be coming from Toronto, Canada with a 34th ranking.
Besides Canfield, another Caribbean entry will be 73rd-ranked Colin Rathbun from BVI, and 142nd-ranked Chris Poole, an intern at CMRC in 2011, qualified for this event by winning Oakcliff's July Grade 3.
Rounding out the field are two other CMRC regulars: CMRC founder Don Wilson, who will be tactically assisted by reigning match race World Champion Ian Williams, and Elliott 6M Olympic contender Stephanie Roble.

Kiwi Sailors' Classy Win
Speed sailing New Zealand trimaran Team Vodafone produced unmatched boat speed to score a runaway line honours win in the Telcoinabox Airlie Beach Race Week today.
Hopes of setting another fast course time appeared remote when the intensely competitive multihull class race started in soft winds on Pioneer Bay.
But thankfully after a short period of being glued to the water Team Vodafone then sailed into a speed sailing grove when skipper Simon Hull steered a fast course across the Molle Channel. They had blown their smaller rivals the Mal Richardson skippered Port Douglas catamaran Malice and the speed sailing Victorian catamaran Mad Max (George Owen) from following their white water wake as the fleet slogged south into the steady 15 knot trade wind.
It soon became evident that the hull flying and wave kissing ORMA 60 trimaran was aggressively sailed with her thrill seeking crew enjoying a brief view of the of White Rock and Denman Island when they flashed past at speed while Malice and Mad Max continued their close duel for the minor places on line honours
Nothing could match the consistent speed sailing boat speed of Team Vodafone during the thrilling downwind sailing leg to clear the northern rounding mark of Gumbrell Island.
In fact Team Vodafone had sailed out of sight to eventually record another impressive average of 11.73 knots in a breeze failed to consistently blow above 15 knots.
Based on this performance and with a threat of racing in a fading breeze will not restrict Team Vodafone from retaining her title as the Southern Hemispheres fastest ocean racing yacht when the final race is decided over the Whitsunday Sailing Clubs Pioneer Bay course tomorrow.
Mark Buchbach's new Allan Carwardine designed Stealthy sports Boat Raptor which recorded two line and handicap wins over the windward leeward courses on Pioneer Bay has firmed a vice-type grip on the class championship.
Raptor only needs to finish in the top nine in the final to beat her nearest rivals Blokes World (Brett Whitbread) and the Bob Cowan steered Stealthy to add the Telcoinabox Airlie Beach Race Week trophy to her equally impressive perfect score win in the Queensland championship. -- Ian Grant
ORACLE Team USA Counts Down to the Launch of First AC72
San Francisco, California, USA: By the end of the month, ORACLE TEAM USA expects to have tested and launched the first of its two AC72 wingsail catamarans planned for the defense of the 2013 America's Cup.
The extreme performance sailboat is the creation of ORACLE TEAM USA's design, engineering and build teams.
The team is currently busy preparing for the first event of the 2012-13 America's Cup World Series, scheduled Aug. 21-26 in San Francisco, but as soon as that event ends the focus shifts to the AC72.
Weather conditions will set the agenda for the week Aug. 27. Day 1 will see boat in the water for structural load-testing and systems checks on design features.
If all signed-off by the engineers and boatbuilders, Day 2 will be the yacht's first scheduled sail on San Francisco Bay. It will become the first AC72 to sail on the waters of the host city.
The hulls of the new yacht were built at the team base at Pier 80, as per the America's Cup rules. But many of the other components, such as the wingsail and crossbeams, were built at Core Builders Composites in New Zealand.
The AC72 Rule is a new design rule created specifically for the 34th America's Cup next year. The rule sets tight limits on design parameters such as length, width, weight and sail area. It is the first new design rule for the America's Cup since the America's Cup Class Rule was created in the late 1980s.

Tuesday 14 August 2012 under clear skies and warm sunshine, marked a very special milestone for Nautor's Swan. When the new Swan 90S, Freya was launched at the Nautor's Swan facility in Pietarsaari, Finland, she was the 2,000th new Swan built by the team of uniquely talented craftsmen since the conception of the company. With a 46 year history behind them, Nautor's Swan has delivered 95 different models of Swan – from the first Swan 36 through to the new Swan105.
The very first Swan, hull number 1, was the Swan 36-001, Tarantella, designed by Sparkman and Stephens, was delivered to her owner on 17th of July 1967. Still sailing and in perfect condition, Tarantella is now owned by Nautor's Swan and based at the yard in Pietarsaari.
The second major milestone in the history of Nautor's Swan was on 15th December 1981 when the first German Frers designed Swan was delivered. Swan 51-012 named Formosa left the yard in freezing conditions bound for the UK. This marked the start of one of the longest partnerships within the marine industry between Nautor's Swan and German Frers that is still a vital and creative relationship over 30 years on.
After a period where the SwanLine moved from smaller yachts to focusing largely upon the Maxi end of the range with the Swan 60, Swan 66, Swan 80, Swan 90 and Swan 105, Swan number 2.000 is an impressive landmark to have acheived. Freya is due to leave the yard following a month of commisioning on 14 September 2012.
