(14:02:28) ChristopherWard: That all seems like a long time ago….
(14:02:50) ChristopherWard: Ooops I’m not from Norfolk by the way
(14:03:05) ChristopherWard: … but yes a couple of trends didn’t go unnoticed
(14:03:26) ChristopherWard: Firstly Skeleton watches…. Which we have resisted doing in the past where
(14:03:50) kip: I know you dislike skeletons...
(14:03:54) ChristopherWard: Were much more to the fore….
(14:04:15) ChristopherWard: But the really interesting one here for the CW team was the new ways that
(14:04:31) ChristopherWard: brands were trying to connect tech with mechanical….digitising analogue to speak…
(14:04:50) ChristopherWard: I’m not necessarily talking smart watches etc but more like the Omega seamaster Professional
(14:05:11) ChristopherWard: There was lots of this sort of stuff around…. Maybe a response to the “threat “ of
(14:05:20) ChristopherWard: smart watches…. Who knows…
(14:05:33) ChristopherWard: but tech meets mechanical…that was the big take for us.
(14:05:45) kip: Do you think that as a company, you are acting (creating) or reacting to market trends?
(14:06:09) ChristopherWard: Hmmm….
(14:06:26) ChristopherWard: A bit of both really….dont we all really react to what the market is doing…
(14:06:39) ChristopherWard: knowingly or not…
(14:07:02) ChristopherWard: trends in the watch industry…moreso than say the clothing industry are more like a glacier on the move rather than an avalanche…
(14:07:19) ChristopherWard: the tend to move slowly and all the brands tend to follow at the same time…
(14:07:34) kip: Next question....
(14:07:37) ChristopherWard: I suppose we are not different in that respect …however were we have maybe been more at the forefront is on
(14:07:54) : 3Flushes logs into the Chat.
(14:08:22) ChristopherWard: the way we ahave approached the watch industry… even today I don’t really know of any brands that can hand on heart say they
(14:08:41) ChristopherWard: design…manufacture their own movements in house…then assemble internally largely in Switzerland
(14:08:59) ChristopherWard: and then sell direct to the customer with nobody else taking a margin in between…
(14:09:17) ChristopherWard: no doubt there are those working on this ….but in terms of being out there and maybe being ahead of the curve…
(14:09:35) ChristopherWard: then from this perspective we certainly have not followed the norm in th watch industry.
(14:10:08) kip: I guess this ties in...Many are wondering....now that you have established a US presence in the form of the showroom in New Hampshire, are there any plans to go beyond the internet and, eventually, go into a "brick and mortar"?
(14:10:38) ChristopherWard: No plans at the moment … the showroom I suppose is beyond the internet…
(14:10:39) kip: Or perhaps have a US authorized service center?
(14:10:43) : Mortuus logs into the Chat.
(14:11:04) ChristopherWard: and its looking very successful at the moment… me and my fellow founders know B and M retailing very well …
(14:11:27) ChristopherWard: so it doesn’t scare us … we would need to consider a whole host of stuff as you would expect… but today… hand on heart there are no plans .. but if we do…we will be good at it.
(14:11:35) ChristopherWard: on the SC front
(14:11:48) ChristopherWard: At the moment we do have an authorised SC for the US…
(14:12:02) ChristopherWard: it just happens to be in the UK and for
(14:12:21) ChristopherWard: good reason it will stay like that until it needs to change…
(14:12:31) ChristopherWard: the world is so small today….
(14:12:52) ChristopherWard: Its cheaper and quicker for me to get a parcel to the USA than it is to the Isle of Skye…
(14:13:08) ChristopherWard: in the UK and Switzerland we have everything we need without overlaying more cost elsewhere…
(14:13:22) ChristopherWard: if it costs me it will cost you…
(14:13:46) ChristopherWard: and right now there is no need for that.. it may change… it will evolve. hopefully.

(14:14:20) kip: A service question.....The listed price for service on your site for quartz analog is the same as for mechanical analog-$105.00.
(14:14:35) ChristopherWard: ok
(14:14:45) kip: I would think the mechanical would be a bit more "labor intensive" and subsequently costlier.
(14:14:58) kip: Is the quartz service expensive or is the mechanical underpriced?
(14:15:33) ChristopherWard: For us, and I am not always the best mathematician the costs for the two watches are broadly the same/similar.
(14:15:44) ChristopherWard: thats the cost of the service I mean
(14:16:04) ChristopherWard: Whethe Q or M the watch still needs to be inspected/administered opened up…broken down cleaned and put back together again…
(14:16:27) ChristopherWard: for qtz we swap battery and for mech we add oils…. Of course this is all on the presumption that as it is a service the watch is largely in working order.
(14:16:41) ChristopherWard: On top of that….as is our want…
(14:16:57) ChristopherWard: lets just keep it simple for the customer… the real answer is they are both good value.
(14:17:31) kip: Your personal/corporate opinion…
(14:17:32) ChristopherWard: does that answer it
(14:17:48) kip: how do you see the watch market reacting to smartwatches?
(14:18:05) kip: Obviously it can be a great debate, but do you think the “quartz crisis” looms in the minds of many companies?
(14:18:22) ChristopherWard: Crisis
(14:18:34) ChristopherWard: I assume you mean the smart watch will kill off qtz…
(14:18:54) kip: or mechanical
(14:18:57) ChristopherWard: maybe…who knows… personally for me a smart watch is not a watch it’s a gizmo/ gadget
(14:19:17) ChristopherWard: will be short lived and will never be
(14:19:28) ChristopherWard: seen on my wrist… that I know…
(14:19:37) kip: Do you think it will actually get more to wear a watch eventually?
(14:20:11) ChristopherWard: i do but...what I don’t know is whether the likes of Apple and Tag and motorla will be successful….
(14:20:26) ChristopherWard: From what I have seen thus far,… they will take money…
(14:20:40) ChristopherWard: a lot no doubt….
(14:21:04) ChristopherWard: But replacing “proper” watches…I don’t think so… right now there are more cons than pros… do you all agree?
(14:21:36) 3Flushes: Absolutely
(14:21:38) kip: Feel free to jump in guys..
(14:21:49) biglove: I agree that they are but a gadget. I feel like their utility will be short lived.
(14:21:51) Racer-X: Yes!
(14:21:53) foghorn: Of course-we're all watch guys
(14:22:05) 3Flushes: And I share your sentiments about them!
(14:22:09) Airframer: If 8 need a gadget, there's a phone in my pocket
(14:22:34) foghorn: A smart pocket watch
(14:22:41) Airframer: Boom
(14:22:46) kip: Chris.....The current and much discussed company logo...
(14:22:53) biglove: If a smart watch is ever made that can hold its charge for 7 days, it might be more of a threat
(14:23:13) kip: …..is it only aficionados and collectors of your brand that complain about, or do consumers ever mention it?
(14:23:27) koimaster: I find the idea of a smart watch to be an oxymoron. Most have too many apps to use or be fully understood.
(14:23:52) ChristopherWard: It comes up every now and then on a forum chat and the odd email to one of the team or myself…
(14:24:11) ChristopherWard: to date it hasn’t stopped us being the fastest growing watchbrand in the UK,
(14:24:26) ChristopherWard: the biggest in volume terms of mechanical watches…
(14:24:42) ChristopherWard: if we kept the old logo would we have grown quicker…?
(14:25:00) ChristopherWard: who knows…
(14:25:16) ChristopherWard: maybe Nike r Coca cola would kow
(14:25:19) ChristopherWard: know
(14:25:32) ChristopherWard:
(14:25:45) kip: do you foresee another change?
(14:26:11) ChristopherWard: never say never... but we are happy in our skin
(14:26:24) kip: Obviously the C60 line is extremely popular ....
(14:26:39) ChristopherWard: yup
(14:26:58) kip: but many complain that the lume is its weakest point.
(14:27:19) kip: Great color choices with the Superluminova, but for a dive watch it fades too quickly.
(14:27:27) ChristopherWard: that may have been
(14:27:31) : ocean has been logged out (Timeout).
(14:27:37) kip: Any plans for using Tritium in the future? Ball seems to have done so quite tastefully.
14:28:30) ChristopherWard: We have always dealt with Superluminova… and after a few years realised
(14:28:49) ChristopherWard: we were probably not getting the best deal so we did have some issues very early on in our life…
(14:29:08) ChristopherWard: however for the last good part of our tenure we have been on the upgraded SLN-T-C1 and C3 there is a marked improvement
(14:29:30) ChristopherWard: In terms of tritium tubes we have manufactured with this before… and very succesfully.. the c600 ..
(14:29:45) ChristopherWard: I think in the future we may well return to something like this … Personally I like it
(14:30:07) ChristopherWard: the cost is significantly more… the rules around it are legendary….
(14:30:17) ChristopherWard: However there is probably more radiation in a banana than a watch…
(14:30:30) ChristopherWard: I think we may well do another tritium watch in the future.
(14:30:54) kip: Many would love to see a Titanium diver, new hour/minute hand styles.
(14:31:01) kip: Is Titanium in the future for CW?
(14:31:02) biglove: I hope so! Love Tritium!
(14:31:11) : ocean logs into the Chat.
(14:31:28) ChristopherWard: Titanium is definitely a substrate we like to work with
(14:31:44) ChristopherWard: and why it has featured in the c11 elite and extreme dive models
(14:31:59) ChristopherWard: it is most definitely in uppermost in or thoughts and
(14:32:09) ChristopherWard: and the next one will be a new design for sure.
(14:32:29) ChristopherWard: possibly in the trident range
(14:32:33) ChristopherWard: we will have to wait and see.
(14:32:48) biglove: That little bit of information just made my day!
(14:33:01) ChristopherWard:
(14:33:06) kip: Some have also expressed interest in seeing CW offer more women's dress/dive watches, some with diamond hour markers.
(14:33:16) kip: Any plans for such in the works?
(14:33:36) ChristopherWard: bkingy or subtle?
(14:33:50) ChristopherWard: Blingy...fat fingers
(14:34:22) ChristopherWard: There is nothing concrete yet
(14:34:33) ChristopherWard: but we will introduce watches that are both smaller and hopefully
(14:34:49) ChristopherWard: will appeal to both Men and women… but they will be watches…
(14:35:01) ChristopherWard: not Mens watches nor womens watches..
(14:35:17) ChristopherWard: they may well have diamonds… but they wont be bling …
(14:35:33) ChristopherWard: and they will carry across more categories than just dive…
(14:35:50) ChristopherWard: whilst we moved away from a specific womens offering we have not abondened them…
(14:36:08) ChristopherWard: at the same time we have introduced strap sizings to cater for the more skinny wristed of us out there.
(14:36:14) ChristopherWard: or more politely
(14:36:22) ChristopherWard: the more feminine of us
(14:36:58) kip: Many also like your C8 fliegers. Tell us...
(14:37:12) kip: Do you feel there is any qualitative difference between the ETA and the Sellita movements?
(14:37:38) ChristopherWard: Not really…
(14:37:57) ChristopherWard: as many of you know Sellita manufactured for ETA for a long time and ETA supplied Sellita with parts…
(14:38:13) ChristopherWard: to make a point of difference Sellita have added a jewel to a movement that has worked for years.
(14:38:36) ChristopherWard: The truth is you cant tell them apart really… in fact somewhere on out site Johannes dis a comparison for me.
(14:38:52) ChristopherWard: One thing I do know is that Sellita manufacture their own parts now on newer machinery…
(14:39:04) ChristopherWard: logic would say…..
(14:39:13) : Airframer logs out of the Chat.
(14:39:23) : Airframer logs into the Chat.
(14:39:24) ChristopherWard: they should be better… certainly in house there is no evidence there is any major quality differene.
(14:39:40) kip: Would you consider making a sterile dial/no date version (of the C8) to be true to historical reference?
(14:39:59) ChristopherWard: Of course…
(14:40:10) ChristopherWard: in fact our latest c8 spitfire watch has no date…
(14:40:33) ChristopherWard: there will be more to follow (with dates) and no doubt after that some will be without.
(14:40:41) ChristopherWard: we are not averse.
(14:41:15) kip: Could you talk about your new in-house movement (SH21)that is starting to appear in some of your line and what this holds for the future of the brand?
(14:41:34) ChristopherWard: Sh21
(14:42:00) ChristopherWard: this is certainly one of the best decisions we ever made ….
(14:42:16) ChristopherWard: and more importantly has given us the springboard for a self sufficient future.
(14:42:36) ChristopherWard: as Johannes calls it … a watchmakers playground…
(14:42:50) ChristopherWard: built under the baukasten concept of manufacture it will allow…
(14:43:08) ChristopherWard: because he wnted it that way to add a whole host of complications to it…
(14:43:20) ChristopherWard: power reserves/ gmts/ jumping hours/ moonphase etc etc…
(14:43:35) ChristopherWard: who knows maybe even a tourbillion one day!
(14:43:37) 3Flushes: Nice!
(14:44:15) kip: Now that you have an in house movement, what escapement are you using? Is the barrel new or is it from stock parts?
(14:44:23) ChristopherWard: very nice indeed
(14:44:49) biglove: That is exciting!
(14:44:58) ChristopherWard: oooh....Johannes will kill me if I gave way too much on the construction of the movement ..
(14:45:17) Airframer: Yes!
(14:45:20) ChristopherWard: but what I can say is that is that we decided to forge ahead with this project we wanted all the parts to be manufactured in Switzerland ,...
(14:45:34) ChristopherWard: un der JJs guidance.
(14:45:56) koimaster: You have quite a few fans here including Mort our resident cadaver.
(14:45:57) biglove: Will there be thinner case options in the future with the in house movement?
(14:45:59) ChristopherWard: Jorg, who heads up our Swiss arm has worked tirelessly to find 9 partners in Switzerland that manufacture the parts for us…
(14:46:05) : Airframer logs out of the Chat.

14:46:45) ChristopherWard: and I must say they are learning a few things along the way…
(14:47:00) ChristopherWard: As we have said in our literature… the CEO of a very well know Swiss brand asked us –
(14:47:26) ChristopherWard: who gives you the licence to do that - …
(14:47:47) ChristopherWard: we chuckle javascript:ajaxChat.insertText('%3AD');
(14:48:02) ChristopherWard: oops that didnt work...
(14:48:13) kip: How do you respond to the controversy related to the SH21 movement which is made at Synergies Horlogeres and was claimed to be an in-house movement?
(14:48:41) ChristopherWard: What controversy? … it’s an in-house movemen
(14:48:48) ChristopherWard: t
(14:49:01) ChristopherWard: our UK and Swiss doors are open for anybody to come and have a look..
(14:49:38) ChristopherWard: nothing to hide in this neck of the woods
(14:50:10) 3Flushes: If the one pusher chrono is any indication, looking very much forward to seeing the proprietary one!
(14:50:34) ChristopherWard: Perhaps you confuse us with other brands
(14:51:12) kip: Your homage approach has been acknowledged by many.
(14:51:36) koimaster: I think the controversy relates to the timing of the announcement and the completion of the purchase ofSynergies Horlogeres which some saw as a misdirection.
(14:52:06) biglove: I believe that's accurate, koi.
(14:52:24) ChristopherWard: Ok koimaster if you can point me to a thread offline i will have a look... but to be honest it missed me
(14:52:39) koimaster: I did not see a problem with it but many forum bullies did.
(14:52:47) koimaster: And I will be happy to Chris.
(14:53:04) koimaster: By the way, the name is Alain.
(14:53:09) ChristopherWard: okeedoke.... as i said we have nothing to hide
(14:53:27) ChristopherWard: homageS?
(14:53:39) kip: Yes..Your homage approach has been acknowledged by many. They also feel that the C60 mentioned above is more of an homage at the component level....
(14:53:46) ChatBot: Mortuus has been logged out (Timeout).
(14:53:46) kip: So, now that you have your own movements, when can we expect more original designs to go with them?
(14:54:05) biglove: Will CW eventually market the SH21 to other watch companies?
(14:54:17) ChristopherWard: We have homages past and present… we don’t deny that…
(14:54:40) ChristopherWard: in fact we say it… unlike some brands that don’t…
(14:54:53) ChristopherWard: and lets be honest most brands have a submariner or a B-Urhen in their range and why not….
(14:55:05) ChristopherWard: But we do also have many designs that are completely CW…
(14:55:15) ChristopherWard: But we do also have many designs that are completely CW…
(14:55:44) ChristopherWard: the movement yes will give us a point of difference…
(14:56:03) ChristopherWard: but there is a lot more to “homage” than that.
(14:56:20) ChristopherWard: the real answer to your question is …. I think…
(14:56:41) ChristopherWard: having such a great movement (s) under our control will undoubtedly lead us to more of our designs being more CW if you get what I mean.
(14:57:13) ChristopherWard: In terms of 3rd parties... when we are ready.... and if they want to...we will chat
(14:57:35) kip: I think anyone who has handled the new C60’s agrees that this is a far superior watch to the original.
(14:57:56) kip: One week point to the original seemed to be the bezel insert attachment.
(14:58:03) kip: Is the ceramic insert glued in similarly? Have any been reported to have fallen off yet?
(14:58:09) biglove: That's good to hear. With ETA doing their thing, it would be great to be in a position to be a supplier if that happens.
(14:58:19) ChristopherWard: thats what we set out to do.... I think we did a very good job
(14:58:25) ChristopherWard: even though I say it myself:
(14:58:33) ChristopherWard:
(14:59:06) ChristopherWard: we could sell to the swatch group... theres an idea
(14:59:09) biglove: Is ceramic difficult to work with?
(14:59:28) ChristopherWard: its a bugger
(15:00:11) biglove: I would imagine that getting anything, say lume material, to stick to it would be difficult! Any plans for sapphire bezel inserts?
(15:00:17) koimaster: I am a fan of the C9. One day.........
(15:00:57) ChristopherWard: the main problem is the range of colour...lume inside the bezel we can do.... we are experimenting now
(15:00:57) ChristopherWard: the main problem is the range of colour...lume inside the bezel we can do.... we are experimenting now
(15:01:22) ChristopherWard: and the range of colours is being extended.
(15:01:54) kip: Any plans to do something smaller than a 38mm or even a 36mm square/rectangular watch?
(15:02:02) biglove: That is also good news. Yeah, I finally discover the C11 and now the non-extreme models are gone.
(15:02:17) ChristopherWard:
(15:02:39) kip: Do you think a slightly smaller model would expand the ladies demand without creating a new line?
(15:02:58) ChristopherWard: Ta square (ish) watch has been on our drawing board for some time... we will
(15:03:35) ChristopherWard: do one that is for sure... what we have at the moment isnt quite right... but we will get their in the not too
(15:03:39) ChristopherWard: distant future
(15:03:56) ChristopherWard: watch this space
(15:04:33) kip: Back to this one...One weak point to the original seemed to be the bezel insert attachment.
(15:04:35) ChristopherWard: on the non extreme versions... be nice to wera ... she might have one hidden for you at a good price

(15:05:17) biglove: Oh, that's some fantastic news!
(15:05:20) foghorn: Thanks guys
(15:05:29) biglove: not you leaving Foggy...the hidden C11!
(15:05:32) Airframer: Chris, are there any plans for a "true" GMT where the main hour hand "jumps" an hour at a time without disturbing the minute hand?
(15:05:35) ChristopherWard: The construction of this watch is different and the components are made in a hoigher grade
(15:05:46) ChristopherWard: factory than previously…
(15:05:49) Racer-X: My browser crashed. Someone else will have to copy this chat
(15:06:06) kip: Is the ceramic insert glued in similarly? Have any been reported to have fallen off yet?
(15:06:31) ChristopherWard: what I can also say is that we have taken this part of the process into our own atelier in Biel with great success.
(15:06:34) ChatBot: foghorn logs out of the Chat.
(15:07:14) ChristopherWard: if they have fallen off my team are keeping it a secret.... I doubt it..as i say
(15:07:18) koimaster: Chris, Where do you see CW as a brand in the next few years? The brand seems to be moving into Nomas territory with the C9 but maintaining the original concept of an affordable and well made watch for the regular folks out there.

(15:08:54) ChristopherWard: but agreed

(15:12:13) ChristopherWard: what I can say is that we have taken this part of the process into our own atelier in Biel
(15:13:08) kip: Shouldn’t it be more interactive with build and comparison features with better quality HD photos and more use of video?
(15:13:20) kip: Do you think that sales would go up just by improving the website?
(15:13:51) ChristopherWard: There is no doubt there is always room for improvement…
(15:14:24) ChristopherWard: the site is currently
(15:14:39) ChristopherWard: on its 4 th generation

(15:16:07) 3Flushes: I have to pop out and wanted to say I appreciate your company's integrity; no better way to quiet one's critics than to be transparent, as I have always found CW to be. It is most welcome in an industry rife with wild claims made by phonies as to the origin of their products. Any doubts? Come on down and take a look around, then. Spoken like a man who walks the talk of his marketing, perhaps your greatest asset in the current sttate of the industry. Glad this chat affirms you're going to continue in that direction. Working on the funds for the one-pusher Joh. worked on, I believe, and looking forward to seeing what you do with the 21. Thanks for taking the time to do this, Mr. Ward All the best to you
(15:16:09) biglove: Hoping the 5th gen sight will be more mobile friendly! I rarely access anything from my laptop anymore.
(15:16:17) ChristopherWard: that customers find the site easy to navigate and find their way a round

(15:18:11) ChristopherWard: but we are also a retailer as well as a brandso we have to consider that too... we have different needs to the likes of Rolex etc
(15:18:26) biglove: Excellent about the mobile compliance!

(15:18:46) ChristopherWard: 3flushes...thanks
(15:18:52) kip: That is the end of the questions that have been submitted. does anybody have any follow ups for Chris at this time?
(15:19:29) biglove: Another couple of questions: Rolex's largest market is Hong Kong, I am told. Does CW have plans for a HK specific web site? Also, I have purchased from the UK site, although living in the US, with favorable dollar conversion rates that saved me $50 vs buying at the US site. Shipping takes longer; but, why the difference?
(15:19:51) koimaster: Well, discounts for Watchlord members would be nice
(15:20:01) biglove:
(15:20:32) ChristopherWard: we are working on language sites right now... chinese wont be the first... there re

(15:23:29) koimaster: Chris, your comment about being an internet company strikes a chord with me. There are others out there that have made numerous claims over the years but you are the only one I know of who has said, drop by, see our place. All of the others and I will not mention them by name fail that test.
