2013-09-21

Welcome to another results column. Find out what you may have missed last week here. This week I keep things short. With "The One" going down other promoters didn't really try to counter program. Aside from a few suspect decisions, a great knockout, and quite a bit of quitting, this was a tame week. On behalf of BLH I would like to apologize for there being no coverage (yet) on the passing and legacy of Ken Norton on the site. I was preoccupied with my feature "Floyd Mayweather and the 10 greatest unbeaten fighters of all time" along with what you're about to read below. Based on the reception the Mayweather piece has received, it's the greatest thing I've ever written. But in reality that's probably mostly due to Mayweather. I guess I'm like Manny Pacquiao in a way, building myself up off Floyd's name...  Anyways, I suggest you read it even if you hate Mayweather and his entire family. There's 9 other fighters to read about!

Also, shout out to D'Angelo Barksdale for inspiring the column title this week. If you don't get it, just think about who won and who lost.

2013-09-11 Bodymaker Colosseum, Osaka, Osaka, Japan

TBS (Japan)

Kazuto Ioka KO7 Kwanthai Sithmorseng

WBA light flyweight title

Ryo Miyazaki MD12 Jesus Silvestre (115-113, 114-114, 115-114)

Silvestre was unlucky to not pull off the upset here, but it wasn't a true robbery. Miyazaki survived a late surge and retained his WBA minimumweight title.

2013-09-12 The Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Victoria, Australia

Fox Sports (Australia)

Czar Amonsot TKO3 Steven Wills

Vacant PABA light welterweight title

Qamil Balla UD10 Jack Brubaker (96-94, 98-92, 97-93)

Vacant Australian light welterweight title

Jeff Horn TKO1 Samuel Colomban

This vacant Australian welterweight title fight is a sure-fire candidate for knockout of the year (at least in Australia).

Ibrahim Balla UD4 Anuntachai Sor Por Lor Krungthep

Kye MacKenzie TKO2 Dominic Shchukin

2013-09-12 Restaurant "Zolotaya Korona", Vladikavkaz, Russia

Ural Boxing

Murat Gassiev RTD3 Roman Mirzoev

Cruiserweight prospect Gassiev improved to 13-0.

Aslanbek Kozaev UD6 Giorgi Ungiadze

Welterweight prospect Kozaev improved to 25-0-1.

2013-09-12 MGM Grand, MGM Grand Conference Center, Premier Ballroom, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Fox Sports

Shawn Porter UD10 Julio Diaz (98-92, 97-93, 97-93)

Porter defended his WBO NABO welterweight title and added the vacant IBF (USBA?) title to his collection, or at least that's what was announced. BoxRec now reports the IBF title at stake was actually the North American version. Per the IBF website Ray Robinson is USBA champ. In any event Porter clearly beat Diaz this time around. Diaz walked through a lot of bombs in this fight, further supporting the theory that Porter seriously lacks punching power.

Badou Jack D10 Marco Antonio Periban (94-96, 95-95, 95-95)

Periban may have been fortunate to retain his NABF super middleweight title in this one. He was busy, but Jack was effective. According to "Punch Stat" Jack out-connected Periban 218-159 but threw 274 less.

Julian Williams NC4 Hugo Centeno Jr (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

After getting shutout on the scorecards through 3 rounds Centeno found a way out in round 4 when a clash of heads opened a cut outside of his left eye. The cut was not very large and did not bleed into his eye, but Centeno apparently claimed impaired vision regardless. Had the bout gone 1 more round before this happened it would have ended in a technical decision, or Centeno would have just continued because he knew he was behind... But it didn't, thus it's a no contest. According to Team Williams this is an unofficial win and there is no interest in a rematch at this time. However, officially, both prospects walk away unbeaten. But look at it this way, at least the WBC didn't get to pimp out their vacant International light middleweight title.

Jermall Charlo TKO7 Rogelio De la Torre

Errol Spence TKO1 Jesus Tavera

Diego De La Hoya TKO3 Luis Cosme

2013-09-13 Complejo Deportivo Inalámbrica, Merida, Yucatán, Mexico

Azteca America

Jose Pinzon UD10 Alan Campa (98-89, 97-90, 95-92)

Previously unbeaten middleweight prospect Campa was upset. Azteca America reports Campa dropped to 15-1 while Pinzon advanced to 24-5.

Miguel Herrera SD6 Albert Pacheco

---------------------

2013-09-13 Robert Treat Hotel, Newark, New Jersey, USA

Pandafeed.TV

John Thompson UD8 Brandon Quarles (80-70, 80-70, 80-70)

Junior middleweight prospect "Apollo Kidd" Thompson proved too much for the limited Quarles to overcome. Thompson's height, reach, and outpoint coasted him to a shutout victory (although it could have been closer). Thompson did leave himself open to over hand rights, but Quarles didn't pack enough of a punch to make him pay for it. Thompson improved to 13-0.

Rickey Edwards UD4 Christian Steele

Anthony Young UD4 James Harrison

Tyrell Wright TKO1 Alex Rozman

Wright got clipped by a left.

Godson Noel TKO2 Charles Kirby

It appeared Kirby dislocated his left shoulder. Whatever the case may be he didn't want to continue.

Samuel Teah TKO3 Larry Yanez

Danny Kelly D4 Jamal Woods

Shakur Jackson D4 Malik Jackson

Jerry Odom TKO1 Antonio Liles

Super middleweight prospect Odom improved to 5-0, keeping his perfect knockout ratio intact. Liles claimed he was downed by an illegal blow to the back of the head and didn't try to beat the count.

2013-09-14 Kipsala Exhibition Centre, Riga, Latvia

Fighter Elvis Promotion

Arturs Kulikauskis UD10 Youri Kayembre Kalenga (100-93?, 99-97?, 100-94?)

This was a good, honest fight between 2 warriors that left it all in the ring. But the scorecards are bizarre. I find it hard to believe that 2 judges didn't think Kalenga won a single round while the other only gave him 1. Kalenga thought he deserved to win, and he looked like the better fighter overall, but the decision went to the hometown guy. I believe some kind of Baltic cruiserweight title was on the line. Kalenga dropped to 16-1 while Kulikauskis remained under .500...

Sergejs Malcevs UD6 Andrej Cepur

Vahram Vardanyan TKO3 Janis Puksins

Olegs Fedotovs MD6? Vygaudas Laurinkus

I didn't actually see the decision on this one, so I'm trusting BoxRec, but it appeared that Fedotovs deserved to win.

2013-09-14 Magna Centre, Rotherham, Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Channel 5 (UK)

Kid Galahad TKO10 James Dickens

Dickens put up a very tough fight which could have gone either way through 9 rounds. But in the end Galahad got the knockout and emerged with the vacant BBBofC British super bantamweight title.

Chris Eubank Jr TKO3 Alexey Ribchev

You could call this a premature stoppage, but by UK standards it was par for the course.

Hughie Fury RTD1 Shane McPhilbin

McPhilbin injured his left shoulder and called it a day.

2013-09-14 MGM Grand, Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Showtime PPV (USA) / BoxNation (UK) / Main Event PPV (Australia)

Floyd Mayweather Jr MD12 Saul Alvarez (114-114, 116-112, 117-111)

Scott Christ recapped this entire PPV, the main event of which can be found here. Mayweather added the WBC (again) and RING junior middleweight titles to his collection. More importantly he's now a lineal champion in 4 weight classes. Despite the scorecards I thought it was a shutout.

Danny Garcia UD12 Lucas Martin Matthysse (115-111, 114-112, 114-112)

[Recap] Garcia retained his WBC/WBA/RING junior welterweight titles and is now the lineal champion of his division. Now he'll probably never fight there again...

Carlos Molina SD12 Ishe Smith (117-111, 112-116, 116-112)

[Recap] Molina lifted the IBF junior middleweight title.

Pablo Cesar Cano SD10 Ashley Theophane (94-96, 98-92, 97-93)

[Recap]

2013-09-14 Paramount Theatre, Huntington, New York, USA

Pandafeed.TV

Chris Algieri RTD7 Wilfredo Acuna

Junior welterweight prospect Algieri improved to 18-0. He basically beat the hell out of Acuna (who had no quit in him, until perhaps retiring in his corner after the 7th round). Pandafeed didn't show if it was Acuna's idea to stop the fight, so he'll stay off the Quit Counter...

Joshua Clottey UD10 Dashon Johnson (100-89, 100-89, 99-90)

And finally we arrive at the long anticipated return of the Grand Master! Clottey will be campaigning as a junior middleweight now and hopes to become world champion again. I thought he looked pretty good in this comeback. Johnson was rocked and frustrated from the first round onward. Johnson couldn't get past Clottey's guard nor was he busier. Clottey's output wasn't great, and never was in the past, but it was a lot better than in the Pacquiao farce and more than enough to make easy work of Johnson.

If things weren't hopeless enough for Johnson he lost a point at the end of round 5 for wrestling Clottey to the ground, supposedly in retaliation for a headbutt. After that he mostly became content with going the distance, which he usually does (only stopped twice). Thus Clottey improved to 37-4.

Constantin Bejenaru UD4 Excell Holmes

You may remember these guys from ESPN Friday Night Fights. That's where they fought the 1st time. Unfortunately it ended in no contest due to a clash of heads in round 2. Consequently we got this re-mismatch. Bejenaru was dominant.

Wendy Toussaint UD4 Koree Boyd

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet.  In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column.  My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of.  For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter.  You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
