Welcome to another weekly results column, now in limited edition. See what you missed last week here.  Sorry for the delay with this release, but, shit happens... In fact, as soon as I publish this column I'm working on another results post for a card I attended yesterday.

-------------------------

2013-08-12 Ota-City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan

Nihon TV

Shinsuke Yamanaka KO1 Jose Nieves

Yamanaka defended his WBC bantamweight title and yet again in emphatic fashion. I no longer care about a WBA unification between Anselmo Moreno and Koki Kameda. Moreno-Yamanaka needs to happen. But it won't. Why? Well, for one, the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) doesn't appear to actually recognize Moreno's "super" title and considers Koki the "real" champion. It's like calling Alexander Povetkin the real WBA heavyweight champion. Hilarious, I know. Anyways, according to JBC, Japan now has 3 of the 4 world champions in the bantamweight division. And you know what? Should they try to be really dominant I think Ryosuke Iwasa is good enough to lift the remaining IBF title too.

Akira Yaegashi UD12 Oscar Blanquet (116-110?, 115-111?, 116-110?)

WBC flyweight title

Hozumi Hasegawa TKO1 Genaro Camargo

This was a highlight reel knockout. I'd show you it, but the entire card was blocked out on YouTube and I don't really feel like going through the trouble of another upload elsewhere at this moment...

Tadashi Yuba TKO1 Yosuke Kirima

Vacant Japanese light middleweight title

2013-08-14 BB King Blues Club & Grill, New York, New York, USA

GFL.TV

Boyd Melson UD8 Jason Thompson (78-73, 78-73, 77-74)

Junior Middleweights

Tor Hamer TKO1 Kertson Manswell

In this heavyweight farce Manswell flopped all over the place and after taking a few shots while he was down pretended like he was knocked out cold. He even pretended that he was hit to the back of the head although replays clearly proved otherwise. Manswell showed a lot more fight in him after it was over than when it was happening.

Donte Strayhorn UD4 Justin Robbins (40-36, 40-36, 40-36)

Michael Doyle TKO1 Neuky Santelises

Sonya Lamonakis UD6 Tanzee Daniel (60-54, 60-54, 59-55)

Patrick Day UD6 Donald Ward (60-54, 60-54, 60-54)

Amos Cowart D6 Chazz McDowell (58-56, 57-57, 57-57)

Lennox Allen UD6 Michael Gbenga (60-54, 59-55, 59-55)

Jeremy Abram UD4 Micah Branch (40-36, 40-36, 40-36)

I was in attendance for this event and recapped the full card here.

Robert Sweeney MD4 Ruben Ortiz (38-38, 39-37, 39-37)

Evincii Dixon KO2 Ramon Ellis

2013-08-16 U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago, Illinois, USA

ESPN

Andrzej Fonfara TKO9 Gabriel Campillo

Scott Christ recapped the full televised card here.

Adrian Granados TKO6 Mark Salser

Artur Szpilka TKO5 Mike Mollo

-------------------------

2013-08-17 Club Social y Cultural El Cruce, Malvinas Argentinas, Buenos Aires, Argentina

TyC

Sergio Jose Sanders KO7 Abel Nicolas Adriel

Middleweights

Hector Alfredo Avila KO3 Jose Manuel Farias

Referees rarely ever bother to count to 10 these days yet this one found it relevant to follow through after Farias blatantly quit due to a shoulder injury.

Nicolas Dario Lopez UD6 Genaro Quiroga (60-54, 60-56.5, 60-54)

Fernando Diego Arguello UD4 Luis Alberto Vera (38-37.5, 38-36, 39-34.5)

Cristian Javier Medina MD4 Jonatan Javier Spesny (39-39, 39-37, 40-38)

-------------------------

2013-08-17 Plaza de Toros, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Televisa (Mexico) / Fox Sports Español (USA)

Takashi Miura UD12 Sergio Thompson (113-112, 114-110, 114-111)

Who says the Japanese don't travel well in boxing? Thompson showed a lot of heart and toughness and may have won half of the rounds (usually narrowly if at all) but in large got the hell beat out of him, particularly in rounds 2, 6, and 10, all of which could have been scored 10-8 Miura. The fight could have been stopped as early as round 2 when Thompson clearly took too long to respond after his 8 count and again in round 10 when he wobbled around the ring practically the entire round. Furthermore round 6 should have been scored 10-7 Miura as Thompson was clearly knocked down at least twice. But aside from those minor inconsequential details, referee Laurence Cole did a bang up job and took another step closer to the IBHOF...

Nonetheless, this was a hell of a fight and Thompson did drop Miura in round 8 (although Miura got back up and buckled Thompson before the bell rang). And after all was said and done, after Miura defended his WBC super featherweight title and advanced to 26-2-2, it was he who needed to go to the hospital upon vomiting in his dressing room. Despite Miura doing the most damage overall the fight was simply that brutal. Rounds 6 and 8 saw particularly savage 2-way action.

Celina Salazar UD10 Ana Julaton (99-90, 99-90, 99-90)

In yet another surprising women's boxing upset for 2013 former world champion Julaton was out muscled by 24 year old prospect Salazar and completely shut out on the scorecards bar a Salazar point deduction. Ana did a lot of promoting for this fight and was coming off a long layoff, so she may not have been at her best physically, but ultimately her strategy seemed foolhardy regardless. She didn't keep her right hand close enough to her chin to catch Salazar's jab (and moved it even further away as she jabbed back). She kept leaning over on the inside (and Salazar responded by pushing down on her head/back). And because she wouldn't give Salazar angles and fought Salazar head on, she allowed herself to get manhandled (whether it was completely legal or not).

Ultimately, Salazar did lose a point for kidney shots in round 5, but it was too little to make an impact on the scorecards. It's not that Julaton wasn't accomplishing anything offensively, it's just that she couldn't string together effective combinations because she constantly fell in and smothered her work. All due credit to Salazar but Julaton had an off day. She made far too many rookie mistakes to suggest otherwise. She is a multi-time world champion after all. But don't let me rain on Salazar's parade. For all I know she could be the future of the female super bantamweight division. Salazar did nothing to "oooh" and "ahhh" about, but what she did do, she did well, and she did it consistently. She kept a high guard, picked Julaton's shots off, and walked her down.

In any event, hopefully this career setback for Julaton won't hurt her progress with getting women's boxing more respect and attention in the USA. Her hard work will not be forgotten and I wish her the best.

Arely Valente SD10 Yesenia Gomez (98-92, 94-96, 98-92)

WBC Youth female flyweight title

PS: BoxRec lists something different than the announced scorecards for both of the televised female bouts on this card. I can't tell you which is accurate. I can only confirm what I saw / heard.

2013-08-17 El San Juan Resort and Casino, Isla Verde, Puerto Rico

DirecTV (USA) / Azteca 7 (Mexico)

Giovani Segura KO4 Jonathan Gonzalez

Yet another unbeaten Puerto Rican prospect stepped up to the major leagues too soon and bit the dust. But it was fun while it lasted. Segura picked up the interim WBO Latino flyweight title.

Jonathan Oquendo KO4 Miguel Tamayo

Tired of getting his ass handed to him, Tamayo decided he'd stay down until after the referee reached 10, and then leisurely strolled back to his corner. There was no arguing with the referee. He just quit, like a man.

...

Wait, what? (More on this in my year-end #QuitCounter2013 article)

2013-08-17 Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom

BoxNation (UK) / HBO (USA) / TV 1 (Russia)

Sergey Kovalev TKO4 Nathan Cleverly

Scott Christ recapped this bout here. Kovalev snatched the WBO light heavyweight title.

Stephen Smith TKO5 Gary Buckland

Recap. Smith captured the BBBofC British super featherweight title.

Enzo Maccarinelli TKO11 Ovill McKenzie

Recap. Maccarinelli lifted the Commonwealth (British Empire) light heavyweight title.

Craig Evans PTS8 Youssef Al Hamidi (80-73)

Lewis Rees PTS8 Dee Mitchell (80-72)

-------------------------

2013-08-17 Revel Resort, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA

HBO (USA) / Sky Sports (UK) / MainEvent (Australia)

Darren Barker SD12 Daniel Geale (113-114, 116-111, 114-113)

As I attended the event live I was able to recap the full card here. Barker lifted the IBF middleweight title, but not without controversy.

Kiko Martinez TKO6 Jhonatan Romero

IBF super bantamweight title

Joel Brunker UD8 Mike Oliver (78-74, 78-74, 78-74)

Yordenys Ugas UD10 John Williams (98-91, 98-91, 99-90)

Ugas won the WBC latin junior interim title, whatever the hell that is. No weight class was specified but Williams weighed in slightly under the junior welterweight limit while Ugas was slightly over.

Thomas Dulorme TKO8 Francisco Figueroa

Jonathan Maicelo KO10 Jose Alejandro Rodriguez

-------------------------

2013-08-17 Laredo Energy Arena, Laredo, Texas, USA

UniMas (USA) / Azteca 7 (Mexico)

Juan Diaz TKO5 Adailton De Jesus

Diaz continues his comeback one small step at a time. Given the climate of the lightweight division, who is to say he can't become world champion again?

Jose Carlos Ramirez TKO1 Mike Maldonado

Ivan Najera UD6 Roger Rosa (59-54, 58-55, 58-55)

Tramaine Williams ND3 Raymond Chacon

An accidental clash of heads opened a major cut on Chacon and the fight had to be stopped. Because 3 rounds weren't completed no decision was rendered.

2013-08-17 Mark C. Marin Center, Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

GFL.TV

John Jackson UD8 Tony Hirsch (79-73, 77-75, 78-74)

This was a closely contested bout between junior middleweights. Jackson improved to 17-1 and kept his name out there as a famous son worth beating to progress from prospect to contender status, much the way Willie Nelson did. All due respect to John and his pretty record, he's just no Julian.

Julius Jackson TKO1 Julius Fogle

Samuel Rogers TKO2 Eduardo Adorno

Rocco Santomauro UD6 Christian Fernandez (59-55, 59-55, 60-54)

Ariel Cabrera Jr RTD1 Arnaldo Decelet

Daniel Rosario Cruz TKO1 Jordan Wisenfeld

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet.  In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column.  My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of.  For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter.  You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
