2013-12-24

Fights from this past Wednesday through Saturday are covered, whether they are high profile or obscure.

There's "only 100" or so fights to review this week but I took my time anyways. I'm simultaneously working on my "year end awards." The next column (possibly covering anything between Dec. 15-21) should come out later this week since there isn't nearly as much to report. The previous column can be found here.

Upsets and near upsets were abundant this week's column, some major.

Tevin Farmer RTD6 Carlos Vinan

Farmer was bigger, faster, stronger, and sharper. Vinan was dumbfounded. Farmer continues to climb the super featherweight ladder.

Kassim Ouma UD6 Rahman Mustafa Yusubov (59-55, 59-55, 59-55)

At no point did Ouma look good and he clearly lost round 2. Larry Holmes and Mike Mittman thought the fight was closer and that Ouma "got a Christmas present." That's a stretch; I agreed with the official scorecards. Punch for punch Yusubov won the fight but he didn't throw enough of them.

It pains me to write this but Jeff Lacy's comeback was better than Ouma's.

Antonio Dubose TKO1 Jesus Gonzales (2:16)

Gonzales went down 3 times.

John Lennox SD6 Kevin Franklin (55-59, 58-56, 59-55)

The GFL commentary team disagreed with the decision, as did I. However, what everyone probably can agree on is that the fight was awful.

Tyrone McKenna UD4 Jefferey Combs (40-36, 39-37, 40-36)

Yesica Patricia Marcos UD10 Angela Marciales (100-90, 100-90, 100-90)

Marcos retained her WBA female super bantamweight title. Ana Julaton had a few words...

Edith Soledad Matthysse UD10 Ogleidis Suarez (100-90, 99-91, 97-93)

Lucas Matthysse's mediocre talented sister became a legitimate world champion before he did. Ahahahaha. Hah! Ha! Aaaaaaaaaaaah. OK I'm done. Edith now holds the WBA female featherweight title.

Also, and this is specifically for all of you Lucas apologists out there, it's OK if you don't respect women's boxing (well, not really, but for the purposes of this argument, sure). When I called Edith mediocre I meant relative to the fighters she competes against, not within both sexes. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it. That being said, this was the best I have seen of Edith. She walked Suarez down and beat her up round after round after round. You know, kind of like Lucas was supposed to do to Danny...

2013-12-13 Club de boxe de l'est, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

GFL.TV

Renan St Juste KO2 Martin Avila

Hooks to the body put Avila down for the count. The 41 year old St Juste appears to once again be campaigning as a middleweight after back to back losses to Anthony Dirrell and Allen Green at higher weights.

Chris Plaitis UD6 Jean Moraiti

Ibrahim Kamal UD6 Virgile Degonzaga

David Maltais MD4 Michel Tsalla

Montasar Mechri UD4 Steve Lantagne

---------------------------------

2013-12-13 Casino Hipodromo Agua Caliente, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico

Azteca America

Gabriel Pena KO5 David De La Mora

De La Mora had lost 4 of his last 6 going in but this was still an upset. It just goes to show that going life and death with the world record breaking Koki Kameda doesn't actually make you a world caliber fighter. Super bantamweight Piña improved to 10-4 (per TV Azteca) off a body shot "KO." The count was quite fast...

Jose Cayetano KO2 Eden Marquez

Luis Nery KO1 Adan Osuna

Misael Castillo KO3 Fidel Lopez

Roberto Ramirez TKO2 Eduardo Iniguez

Baez threw a left. Ochoa hit the deck.

Jason Bergman KO1 Rubin Williams

According to BoxRec Williams has lost 20 in a row since drawing with Antwun Echols in 2007 at super middleweight. I figure he's also put on about 40 pounds since then...

Travis Clark UD6 Justin Novaria

Cian Dalton TKO1 David White

Jerrell Harris KO2 Clifford McPherson

It's funny that this fight has yet to make BoxRec. McPhearson got laid flat out by an illegal punch in the first round. He didn't move for several minutes. But then he suddenly jumped up and the fight resumed. I suppose someone told him that if he stayed down, he would lose (after a 5 minute grace period). It doesn't always work that way...

Nonetheless McPherson continued and was stopped in the next round, courtesy of a left hook. It's safe to say he did not try to beat the count.

Myriam Dellal UD10 Anita Torti (96-95?, 96-95?, 96-95?)

Hometown favorite Dellal pulled out a tight unanimous decision for the vacant WBC International female lightweight title. Both fighters landed bombs. Both fighters bled. The action was continuous from start to finish. I recommend watching.

Denis Farias D6 Lyes Chaibi

---------------------------------

2013-12-14 Jahnsportforum, Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

ARD (Germany) / BoxNation (UK) / CNOPT 1 (Russia)

Juergen Braehmer UD12 Marcus Oliveira (115-112, 117-110, 117-110)

Braehmer was upgraded from interim to regular WBA light heavyweight champion. Oliveira put up a decent fight despite being "dropped" in the 10th round, minus all the holding. Oliveira tried to sell getting hit by a body shot on the break by taking a knee but was ruled down for his troubles. However, Oliveira responded by closing the fight strong.

But the real story of the fight was the delay before ring walks, thanks in part to Don King...

Kubrat Pulev RTD4/TKO5 Joey Abell

Pulev took a late replacement stay-busy fight and defended his IBF International heavyweight title. Pulev was ruled down early in round 4 on a punch/trip but got up to drop Abell 3 times on clean body shots before the bell rang. Abell retired in his corner afterward. Pulev remains the IBF mandatory for Wladimir Klitschko.

Jack Culcay UD12 Dieudonne Belinga (118-111, 118-109, 116-111)

WBA Inter-Continental light middleweight title

---------------------------------

CadenaTres

Antonio Lozada Jr (S?)D10 Ramiro Alcaraz (98-92, 95-97, 94-94?)

This rematch was announced a draw but the even scorecard sounded fishy. You'd expect 95-95. BoxRec reports that the actual card is 96-94 for Lozada, making him the winner by split decision. Thus Lozada keeps himself relevant as a light welterweight prospect.

Patricio Moreno TKO3 David Gonzalez

Sergio Thompson TKO1 Cesar Chavez

Yeyo rebounded nicely from his first world title failure. He'll be back in the mix soon enough. But in which weight class? He jumped up 2 weight classes to fight at light welterweight here.

Frankie Gomez TKO1 Prince Doku Jr

Adan Mares SD6 Eugenio Lopez

Mario Sanchez SD4 Jesse Roman

Miguel Flores KO3 Jorge Rodriguez

---------------------------------

2013-12-14 The Trusts Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand

Sky Arena

Brian Minto RTD7 Shane Cameron

Minto, through questionably legal tactics, swarmed Cameron from the opening bell and was all over him like white on rice. He never quite had the power to put Cameron down but he at least hurt him in the majority of rounds. Cameron clinched a lot to survive for as long as he did but was eventually stopped on cuts. While it lasted it was an all-out war and one of the best heavyweight fights of the year. Cameron's best moment came in round 3 when he wobbled Minto with a shot high on the head behind the ear, despite being hurt himself earlier that round.

The cut opened on Cameron that round was ultimately his undoing. His only hope was to last long enough for Minto to get disqualified. Minto lost a point for elbows in round 5 and another point for headbutts in round 6. Cameron's corner told him (between rounds 6 and 7) that he had 1 round left before the fight would be stopped. Subsequently Cameron started the 7th strong, but it just wasn't meant to be. Cameron faded and Minto rallied again. Cameron was hurt but made it back to his corner to retire on his stool.

Thus Minto improved to 39-7 and picked up the vacant WBO Oriental heavyweight title. New Zealand will welcome him back for another 2 fights according to his contract. An eventual showdown with Joseph Parker is predicted.

Felix Lora SD12 Serhiy Fedchenko (112-119?, 114-113?, 114-112?)

Lora upset Fedchenko and lifted the WBO European light welterweight title.

Oleksandr Usyk TKO4 Epifanio Mendoza

Mendoza upset a 13-0, 2008 Olympian named Carlos Negron in 2011 but was not so fortunate against the 1-0, 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist on this night. The stoppage seemed premature but he didn't seem to care...

2013-12-14 ExCel Arena, Dockland, London, United Kingdom

Sky Sports

Leonard Bundu TKO12 Lee Purdy

This was an impressive and entertaining performance by Bundu where he retained his EBU (European) welterweight title. The unbeaten 39 year old has a case to be ranked among the 15 best welterweights in the world.

Kevin Mitchell TKO9 Karim El Ouazghari

IBF Inter-Continental lightweight title

Martin Murray PTS8 Sergey Khomitsky (77-75)

This was not a very good performance by Murray. Nonetheless promoter Ricky Hatton said he has a world title fight set up for Murray in February. It turns out that Hatton was telling the truth.  Murray gets to fight Jarrod Fletcher for the regular WBA middleweight title as Gennady Golovkin is promoted to super champion...

Jamie McDonnell PTS8 Abigail Medina (78-75)

Sullivan Barrera UD6 Joell Godfrey (60-54, 60-54, 60-54)

Barrera, by way of Cuba, is a future light heavyweight contender. He was 285-27 as an amateur.

Hairon Socarras TKO1 Carlos Fulgencio

I was impressed by Socarras' punching power when he turned pro in early 2011. I'm still impressed. His career hasn't really gone anywhere since then, but the man can punch. He's also 9-0-1 now and probably settling into the featherweight division. I'll keep watching. Fortunately unlike most Cubans early in their pro career "El Maja" is still very young (20).

2013-12-14 Resorts International Hotel & Casino, Superstar Theatre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA

NBC Sports

Amir Mansour RTD7 Kelvin Price

After feeling each other out in the opening round Mansour pressed Price and aggressively attacked the body. It didn't take long for the head to follow and Price found himself wobbling around the ring by round 4. It was a wrap from there on. Price hit the deck in the 5th, took more of a beating in the 6th, and hit the deck one last time in the 7th before miraculously making it out of the round. It was the right decision to stop it in the corner. Thus KO artist Mansour remains unbeaten and improves to 20-0. He called out Deontay Wilder in his post-fight interview, claiming he hits up to 3 times as hard. Check out Darryl Cobb's photography of the event here.

Lionell Thompson UD10 Ryan Coyne (99-90, 99-90, 99-90)

In the co-main event of the evening Thompson made fairly easy work of Coyne. You may last remember Thompson from getting destroyed by Sergey Kovalev in 3 rounds. But since then we've learned that Kovalev is arguably the best light heavyweight in the world today. "Lonnie B" was rated the #2 light heavyweight in the world as an amateur and his technical skills are apparent if you watch him against anyone that isn't a seek-and-destroy monster. Thompson out boxed Coyne using superior foot work, hand speed, and punch selection. Coyne was perplexed and consequently his face got busted up.

Steve Cunningham UD8 Manuel Quezada

NBCSN merely showed brief highlights of an easy Cunningham decision victory.

Darnell Wilson KO6 David Rodriguez

No footage was shown of this bout even though it may have actually been the fight of the night. It was definitely the KO of the night. Rodriguez, apparently ahead on the scorecards, was disconnected from his senses with less than 10 seconds to go in the final round. So goes yet another protected undefeated record. Rodriguez drops to 36-1.

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet.  In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column.  My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of.  For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter.  You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
