2013-12-17

Fights from this past Tuesday through Saturday are covered, whether they are high profile or obscure.

Aaaaaaand finally the new results column is out. Check out the week before here. Lots of stuff to discuss from this week. Too much in fact. Why do you think it took so long to release this?

Well, we must also consider that I attended another media day last week, which you can checkout here, and that ate a lot of my time. Practically every day I push back releasing the column I find more fights to add to it. It's a nightmare quite frankly. Fortunately I only have a few more columns left, only 1 of which should be major. But enough about the future. Let's discuss my record breaking installment in front of you this week. I counted around 130 fights. O-N-E--H-U-N-D-R-E-D--T-H-I-R-T-Y F-I-G-H-T-S!!!

I'm losing my mind. I watched more boxing from this week alone than most consistent (not casual) fans watch in the entire year. I think it's great that all of these fights got made available worldwide (if you know where to find them). But I wish it would just stop now. I've over dosed. Quick, call a doctor to resuscitate me. I decided against my better judgement to actually attend Glen Johnson vs Bobby Gunn tomorrow. I know quite a few of the undercard fighters...

Now let me just get this over with already so I can take a nap and spar later. I turn pro next year. Can a man report on his own fights? **** it, it's boxing.

Sleep deprivation makes the mind wander...

TBS (Japan)

Liborio Solis SD12 Daiki Kameda (113-115, 116-112, 116-112)

Daiki Kameda got the hell beat out of him but retained his IBF super flyweight title because Solis failed to make weight. If 2 judges had been inept instead of 1, he additionally would have picked up the WBA super flyweight title. However, since that was not the case, that title is now vacant. And guess what? Koki Kameda has relinquished his WBA title at bantamweight to move down to super flyweight and fight for the vacant crown. The WBA has rated him #4 at 115 to make this possible.

However, in the event that Denkaosan Kaovichit vs Kohei Kono takes place for said vacant title, Koki may still go after other world titles in the weight class. If successful Koki will break his own record and become the only 4 division world champion in Japan's history.

Be that as it may, Koki still won't be 1 of Japan's 10 greatest fighters to lace gloves. Remind me to do that list when if this happens. (See 10: Greatest Cuban pro boxers of all time)

Tomoki Kameda UD12 Immanuel Naidjala (119-109, 118-110, 117-111)

As the fight progressed Tomoki looked less and less impressive. Nonetheless he fairly defended his WBO bantamweight title, even if the official scores were too wide.

Katsunari Takayama UD12 Vergilio Silvano (118-110, 118-110, 120-108)

Silvano was dominated by Japan's "Energizer Bunny." Takayama will now aim to unify his IBF minimumweight title with Xiong Zhao Zhong's WBC strap. Such a fight pairing China and Japan's champions could create the biggest boxing match in Asia's history. Fellow scribe Ryan Songalia compared it to Joe Louis-Max Schmeling.

2013-12-04 BB King Blues Club & Grill, New York, New York, USA

GFL.TV

Boyd Melson UD8 Gundrick King (80-72, 80-72, 80-72)

Melson won the fight, and now has a nice 13-1-1 record, but the middleweight division was not put on notice. That's about as kind as I can be about his ability. Also, King looked like he didn't train. Basically Chavez Jr's work ethic put King to shame here.

Luis Rosa TKO3 Andre Wilson (2:24)

Dashon Johnson UD6 Craig McEwan (58-55, 58-55, 57-56)

Bryant Cruz UD6 Joshua Arocho (58-55, 58-55, 58-55)

RCTI (Indonesia) / Orange Sport (Poland)

Simpiwe Vetyeka RTD6 Chris John

Scott Christ recapped the main and co-main events here. John losing makes back-to-back weeks where a 48-0 fighter has lost. Fascinating, isn't it? Remind me to do a story about that too... Vetyeka unified the IBO and super WBA featherweight titles.

Daud Cino Yordan SD12 Sipho Taliwe (113-114, 116-111, 117-110)

Yordan retained his IBO lightweight title, perhaps fortunately. Let's just say it was debatable.

Rasmanudin UD6 Roberto Lerio

This was a devastating 1-punch knockout, a beautiful left cross.

Michael Wallisch UD10 Lars Buchholz (97-93, 100-90, 98-92)

Germany BDB heavyweight title

Christina Hammer TKO1 Carmen Garcia

Hammer defended her World Boxing Federation female and WBO female middleweight titles. She's basically the Wladimir Klitschko of female boxing. Weight classes above middleweight are not currently worth acknowledgement among women, and neither is middleweight besides Hammer. Dear Claressa Shields...please turn pro immediately after Rio 2016.

2013-12-06 Kokugikan, Tokyo, Japan

Fuji TV / Camcorder

Akira Yaegashi UD12 Edgar Sosa (116-112, 117-111, 117-111)

After feeling each other out in the opening round Akira's speed took over and he cruised to a clear decision victory. Open scoring revealed the fight was 39-37 (x2) and 40-36 all for Akira after 4 rounds. Then open scoring revealed the fight became 79-73, 80-72, and 77-75, once again all for Akira. I'm surprised a judge that had it a shutout through 8 managed to give Sosa 3 of the last 4 rounds. I did not see a comeback. I suppose the judge in question was just mad at Akira for coasting. Or he was just trying to not turn in a shutout scorecard...

In any event Akira retained his WBC & RING flyweight titles.

Ryota Murata TKO8 Dave Peterson

Peterson proved an adept, crafty boxer with a very good chin. He took Murata to the final round. It was impressive, almost as impressive as the unstoppable force that is Ryota Murata. Peterson lost every round but physically started breaking down by the 5th. When Murata stepped up the intensity in the final round the ref was given no choice but to step in. Peterson never left his feet but his life was clearly in danger. Middleweights beware, 2012 Olympic Gold medalist Murata is coming for you. His next victim will meet him on Feb. 22 in Macao on the undercard of Miguel Vazquez-Denis Shafikov.

Naoya Inoue TKO5 Jerson Mancio

Mancio looked done when he was dropped in round 2 but he came back strong to close the round. But ultimately Inoue wore him down and acquired the vacant OPBF light flyweight title. The referee stopped the fight in round 5 while Mancio was still standing, yet it was far from an early stoppage.

Ryosuke Iwasa TKO5 Hiroki Shiino

2013-12-06 Bialobrzegi, Poland

Orange Sport

Pawel Glazewski UD8 Andrei Salakhutdzinau (79-73?, 80-72?, 79-73?)

Former light heavyweight contender Glazewski, once unlucky in his own backyard against the great Roy Jones Jr, successfully began his comeback trail following an upset stoppage loss to Hadillah Mohoumadi.

Krzysztof Cieslak SD8 Sebastien Cornu

Andrzej Soldra TKO5 Lorenzo Di Giacomo

Piotr Gudel UD4 Artsiom Pavinich

Shayne Singleton TKO6 Leon Findlay

Welterweight prospect Singleton picked up his 16th straight victory.

Stevie Taylor TKO4 Rolandas Cesna

While cruiserweight prospect Taylor picked up his 6th. This stoppage was probably early.

Haidher Riaz PTS4 Kevin McCauley

Qasim Niaz PTS4 Jamie Zaszlos

Atif Mushtaq PTS4 Carl Allen

Artif Ali PTS4 Kristian Laight

-----------------------------

2013-12-06 UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois, USA

Integrated Sports / ESPN3.com

Krzysztof Wlodarczyk TKO7 Giacobbe Fragomeni (0:01)

Fragomeni was down, nearly out, and cut badly below the left eye in round 4. The cut got worse and eventually "forced" a corner stoppage. What actually happened is that the doctor pretty much asked Fragomeni if he wanted him to stop it or not. Fragomeni replied "stop it" multiple times. Wlodarczyk retained his WBC cruiserweight title.

Andrzej Fonfara KO2 Samuel Miller (0:58)

Miller took a knee in round 1 thinking he'd be given time to recover from a low blow. Instead the referee just counted it as a knockdown. Miller was knocked out with a lead left hook in round 2 after hitting Fonfara behind the head. I suppose the plan to carry Fonfara's over matched opponent went out the window with the illegal blow.

Henry Coyle UD6 Skyler Thompson (60-53, 59-54, 60-53)

Thompson was ruled down in the last round when Coyle stepped on his foot and hit him. It wasn't relevant to the outcome.

Adrian Granados TKO6 Carlos Winston Velasquez (0:01)

Jonathan Gonzalez TKO5 Jaison Palomeque (1:05)

Palomeque went down in rounds 1, 2, 4, and 5. But he got up every time. The ref showed mercy.

2013-12-06 Evangeline Downs Casino, Opelousas, Louisiana, USA

Bebe Video Productions

Hamilton Ventura UD8 Andres Taylor (79-73, 79-73, 80-72)

Cruiserweight prospect Ventura improved to 12-0-1.

-----------------------------

2013-12-06 Little Creek Casino Resort, Shelton, Washington, USA

Showtime

J'Leon Love TKO6 Lajuan Simon (2:48)

If Simon wasn't old and inactive he probably would have given Love a real run for his money. Aside from the stoppage, which came abruptly, Love didn't look too impressive (or exciting). A photo gallery of the complete televised card with fighter quotes can be found here.

Badou Jack TKO6 Rogelio Medina (2:30)

After arguably dropping the first 3 rounds Jack came back strong in round 4 and began to break Medina down. After 3 knockdowns in round 6 the ref stepped in.

Mickey Bey TKO3 Carlos Cardenas (2:22)

Christopher Pearson TKO1 Acacio Joao Ferreira (1:44)

The ropes kept Joao Ferreira up and caused him to take a lot of unnecessary punishment.

2013-12-07 Club Atlético Talleres, Cordoba, Cordoba, Argentina

TyC

Julius Jackson TKO9 Nicolas Dario Lopez

The sons of Julian Jackson came, they saw, and they knocked their Argentine opponents out. Julius vs Nicholas matched unbeaten prospects.

John Jackson TKO8 Jorge Daniel Miranda

John vs Jorge matched former fringe contenders...one much further removed than the other. Guess which one lost?

Jose Carlos Paz RTD5 Luis Antonio Garay

Carlos Adan Jerez UD10 Samuel Rogers

SAT1 (Germany) / Sky Sports (UK) / XSPORT (Ukraine)

Felix Sturm TKO2 Darren Barker

Scott Christ recapped this bout here. Sturm lifted the IBF middleweight title and became a 4-time world champion. Barker, on the other hand, might retire after his only (and brief) reign.

Susi Kentikian UD10 Simona Galassi (98½-94?, 99-91½?, 97-95½?)

Maurice Weber TKO2 Volodymyr Borovskyy

Hugo Fidel Cazares MD12 Julio Cesar Miranda (116-112, 114-114, 115-114)

Cazares defended his WBC International Silver super bantamweight title. I'm reporting the announced scorecards. BoxRec lists a unanimous decision victory for Cazares (116-112, 115-113, 115-113).

2013-12-07 Echo Arena, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom

BoxNation

Stephen Ormond UD10 Derry Mathews (98-93, 98-93, 98-92)

Mathews didn't score a knockout, thus he did not win...par for the course. Ormond retained his WBO European lightweight title. Fortunately for Mathews, and boxing fans, his next opponent (Richard Commey) also only wins by KO (quite literally in his case). At least I still think that's the opponent. Mathews said he wants a rematch with Ormond in the post-fight interview. He blamed his performance on injuring his right hand in the 2nd round.

Liam Smith TKO4 Mark Thompson

BBBofC British light middleweight title

Paul Butler UD12 Ruben Montoya (120-109, 120-108, 118-110)

WBO Inter-Continental & WBA Inter-Continental super flyweight titles

Enzo Maccarinelli TKO7 Courtney Fry

Big Mac is looking to get another world title shot after the next defense of his Commonwealth (British Empire) light heavyweight title. I could definitely see him fighting Juergen Braehmer. But I would only give him a good shot of beating IBO champion Blake Caparello. And that's pretty much a 50/50 fight.

Joe Selkirk TKO3 Zoltan Sera

-----------------------------

2013-12-07 Verizon Wireless Arena, Manchester, New Hampshire, USA [BKB 2]

DirecTV

Eric Fowler TKO3 Bryan Abraham

Bare Knuckle Boxing is back! And it's sponsored by Playboy...

Once again the BKB main event saw Fowler a headliner but it wasn't easy for him this time around. He was down and nearly out in round 2 and hurt some more in round 3 before scoring 2 knockdowns of his own. However, the referee was quite quick to stop the fight...

Nonetheless Fowler became the BKB lightweight champion. The crowd booed the result but Fowler offered to give Abraham a rematch. Abraham wants it.

Eddie Caminero UD7 David Estrada

On paper this was a ‘gimme' for Estrada. He was the experienced veteran and former world title contender while Caminero was just a career journeyman. But Caminero didn't give a ****. He came out fast and beat the hell out of Estrada in round 1, scoring a knockdown in the process. But he couldn't finish him off. Estrada came back and the fight of the night came to fruition. But Caminero would not be denied. He walked through fire and dug deep to pull out the victory. Caminero was rewarded with the vacant BKB middleweight championship.

Javier Garcia TKO2 Allen Litzau

Pelos Garcia, 1of 2 nephews of Robert Garcia to fight on this card, dominated from the opening bell and scored a knockdown in each round. Pelos picked up the vacant BKB welterweight title.

Josh Harris UD5 Jason Gavern

Last month Gavern beat the great James Toney. This month he got dropped twice and handled by journeyman Josh Harris. Such is boxing.

Don Mouton MD5 Jesse Orta

Two journeymen slugged it out. The one with the winning ring record pulled it out.

Lekan Byfield UD5 Jason Naugler

Naugler was the crowd favorite but Byfield was the far superior boxer. It wound up a shutout.

Julian Pollard KO1 Excell Holmes

Heavyweight prospect Pollard is 3-0 with 3 KOs in the ring and now 2-0 with 2 KOs in the pit.

Raul Tovar Jr TSD3 Agustine Mauras

Clashes of heads early in the fight ultimately led to the stoppage. Mauras was cut bad outside of both eyes but fought courageously through 3 complete rounds. Had his corner pulled him out earlier it would have resulted in a no contest. Tovar was responsible for the headbutts.

Khurshid Abdullaev TKO2 Jonuel Tapia

It became clear to me why Robert Garcia was commentating instead of working his fighters' "corners" after this 3rd straight domination on the roster. Note that I'm listing the results in reverse chronological order if you're confused...

Eduardo Alicea TKO5 Teneal Goyco

Unbeaten super middleweight prospect Alicea, with a 143-16 amateur record, out classed the rough and awkward Goyco by keeping it basic. Goyco was rocked throughout the fight but never dropped or defenseless. The ref showed mercy in the final round. Alicea is also a member of Robert Garcia's gym.

Matt Doherty SD5 Kendo Castaneda

Castaneda is still 5-0 inside the ring but lost his pro debut in the pit. It was a close fight that could have gone either way. Castaneda had more skill but took a while to adjust to how pit fighting works.

David Garcia TKO2 Louis Webster

David is a nephew of the renowned trainer and former world champion Robert Garcia. His alias is "Gordo," which means fat in Spanish. Although he turned pro as a welterweight in a standard professional boxing, he showed up as a light heavyweight here. Nonetheless he dominated the fight. Robert said David's sparring with Brandon Rios and Marcos Maidana helped him. I bet it did...

Kin Moy UD5 Marc Antonio Torres

2013-12-07 Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA

HBO & TopRank.TV (USA) / Sky Sports (UK)

Guillermo Rigondeaux UD12 Joseph Agbeko (120-108, 120-108, 120-108)

I attended this event and recapped the full card here. Rigondeaux defended his super WBA / WBO / RING junior featherweight titles.

James Kirkland TKO6 Glen Tapia (0:38)

Matthew Macklin UD10 Lamar Russ (96-94, 98-92, 97-93)

Matt Korobov TKO9 Derek Edwards (0:28)

Toka Kahn Clary UD6 Ramsey Luna (57-55, 57-55, 57-55)

Jesse Hart TKO1 Tyrell Hendrix (1:20)

Julian Rodriguez UD4 Ryan Picou (40-36, 40-36, 40-36)

Egor Mekhontsev TKO3 Peter Cajigas (2:35)

-----------------------------

2013-12-07 Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, USA

Showtime (USA) / BoxNation (UK)

Paul Malignaggi UD12 Zab Judah (116-111, 117-110, 117-110)

Paulie picked up the vacant NABF welterweight title and some funky Brooklyn title. Scott Christ recapped the action here.

Shawn Porter UD12 Devon Alexander (115-113, 116-112, 116-112)

Porter upset Alexander for the IBF welterweight title. Scott recapped it here.

Erislandy Lara UD12 Austin Trout (118-109, 117-110, 117-110)

Contrary to popular opinion at the time, it appears Lara merely retained his interim WBA junior middleweight title. The WBA has no need to upgrade Lara until they promote an unqualified fighter to the mandatory position for his interim belt that he's obviously not going to fight. Then Lara will be made regular champion. At least that's my best guess. Meanwhile, the real WBA champion is still Floyd Mayweather. Scott recapped Lara-Trout here.

Sakio Bika D12 Anthony Dirrell (114-112, 110-116, 113-113)

But firstly Scott recapped the best TV fight of the card here. Bika retained his WBC super middleweight title.

If a bout is not mentioned which took place on one of the above cards it’s most likely because I haven’t got around to watching it yet.  In the event that I do watch such a bout at a later time it’s still unlikely I will update this results column.  My columns will be posted once a week, devoted to cards that most casual American boxing fans haven’t seen or heard of.  For available footage of the previously reported bouts follow @sweetboxing on twitter.  You may also email the author of this piece at rgbivins@gmail.com.
