Facebook Will More Than Quadruple its Office Space with Move to South Lake Union

Puget Sound Business Journal | Marc Stiles | Feb. 16

http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/blog/techflash/2015/02/facebook-will-more-than-quadruple-itsseattle.html

“Sources in the commercial real estate industry say Facebook has agreed to rent all but two of the 10 floors in the soon-to-open Dexter Station building, 1101 Dexter Ave. N. This totals 280,000 square feet, or just over four and a half times what Facebook now occupies nearby in the Denny Triangle neighborhood. The eight floors Facebook is leasing at Dexter Station are big enough to house around 2,000 employees…The 280,000 square feet that Facebook is leasing is much more space than what real estate experts thought the company would lease. Last summer, it was believed the company – now in 60,000 square feet in the Metropolitan Park East tower – was looking for 100,000 square feet of office space…The Dexter Station lease is the second major office deal in just over a month for this part of South Lake Union, where other development is occurring, including more than 1,000 new apartments.”

GeekWork Picks: Zillow Seeks Out-of-Practice Coders for ‘Returnship’ Program

GeekWire | Monica Nickelsburg | Feb. 12

“In December Zillow launched a new “Returnship” program, a three-month training gig that allows developers to refresh their coding knowledge with the help of a mentor. ‘I think that the industry moves so fast, and technology moves so fast. I’ve talked to other people, and it’s intimidating,’ Program Leader Kristin Acker told GeekWire. ‘The reality is that if they were good at it before, they’re probably going to be good at it again. And if we can help them get back, that’s great.’ The position is designed for developers who have taken a break to raise kids, travel or for other reasons. After the three-month training period there is potential opportunity for a full-time role at Zillow.”

Candidates with a BS degree in Computer Science or a related field and at least five years of software development experience can apply here.

The Internet of Everything Will Impact Everything, Including Your Next Tech Job

Wired | Dan T. Pickett | Feb. 11

http://www.wired.com/2015/02/internet-of-everything-your-next-tech-job/

“The Internet of Everything (IoE) is having an enormous impact on business…In fact, 86% of 1,400 business leaders surveyed by Accenture think that the industrial Internet of Everything will be a net creator of jobs. As IoE takes center stage, a host of new jobs will be created and current roles will be re-defined…It is no secret that IoE will have an immensely positive impact on the overall job creation and growth in many industries. The Jobs Report for December 2014 reported that 252,000 US jobs were created in December alone, and the unemployment rate dropped to 5.6%. IoE will only add to these numbers, as it will require companies to grow and expand their skill-set to hire professionals who possess the skills needed to properly implement the technology…IoE is shifting the industry, both from a technology standpoint and within the enterprise. It is not just creating more robust and innovative technologies, it is also creating an entirely new field of jobs that have never been seen before. It is opening up doors for even more job development and growth in technology fields in all industries.”
