Washington Winter Beer Festival (December 6th and 7th) is one of the most highly anticipated beer events of the year around Seattle. Online ticket sales have been brisk as the winter wind (don’t delay). Hosted by the Washington Beer Commission, this year’s event features more than 50 Washington breweries and more than 150 beers. There are three different sessions: Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening. Four local food trucks will serve food at this year’s festival. Also, enjoy chocolate sampling and oysters on the half shell. There will also be a holiday gift store where you can pick up some great Washington beer gear.

Along with a new location and a bigger venue, this year’s event offers beer lovers more beers from more breweries. Here is the list of breweries and beers as it exists right now. There may be some changes, but this should whet your winter beer appetite.

1) Cascadian Dark Ale
Welcome to the dark side of India Pale Ales. Conceived here in the NW, we’re proud to offer this intensely hoppy, black, yet velvety smooth craft beer. Brewed with de-husked black malt, caramel malt, and generously hopped with Columbus, Centennial and Amarillo. Our CDA achieves layers of hop character nicely balanced by a hint of roast and a smooth lingering finish. 65 IBU 7% ABV
2) Rude Parrot IPA-
Loud, sassy, and relentless, the Rude Parrot has an insatiable appetite for hops! Brewed with Vienna, light Crystal, and a touch of Honey malt, this golden hued IPA is aggressively hopped with Simcoe and Citra hops. A big juicy, tropical fruit hop nose yields way to an off dry, pleasantly bitter finish. Drink up while you can, the Rude Parrot is flying circles around you. 75 IBU 5.85% ABV
3) Imperial Oatmeal Raisin Stout
Hearty and warming, this Winter Seasonal is just what you need to keep out the cold. We used dark malt varieties such as Chocolate Wheat to lend a chocolate roasty-ness, and Rolled Oats for a nice smooth mouth feel and silky head. We also used more than 1.5 lbs. per BBL of northwest hops and organic raisins to give this beer a floral comforting nose. At 9% ABV, this seasonal warms you from the inside out. Think Oatmeal Raisin Cookie in a glass, garnished with pine and citrus. 65 IBU 9% ABV.

American Brewing, Edmonds
1) Fed White & Brew ESB – 2013 GABF Bronze Medal Winner!
Brewed in conjunction with Simon Majumdar from “The Next Iron Chef”, this is an English Style ESB with a coppery gold color and an ivory head. A light hoppy aroma fills the nose, but comes on malt forward at first sip. Well balanced with a residual sweetness and a clean finish to the palate, encouraging you to take another taste! 60 IBU 6% ABV
2) Winter Classic
A Strong Ale that is dark chocolate brown to almost black in color. Eight specialty malts contribute to its full-bodied sweetness. Piney flavors and aroma from the hops are evident but balanced with a complex malty-caramel-chocolate sweetness. A longer aging process contributes to the deep richness of this ale. 80 IBU 8.2 % ABV
3) Breakaway IPA
This IPA is a true Northwest style IPA; a big, bold hop aroma with floral and citrus notes greets you. Its dark honey color is a bit hazy due to dry hopping. There is a medium intense hop bitterness that doesn’t linger and is well balanced with a citrusy, (grapefruit), malty sweetness. 90 IBU 7.2% ABV
Anacortes Brewery, Anacortes
1) Broadsword Scottish Ale
A strong Scottish ale has robust malty flavors with subtle smokiness and a balanced bitterness from Perle, Cascade and Mt Hood hops. Broadsword is made with Black Patent, Caramel, Chocolate, Munich and Peat smoked malts for a dark color and rich flavor. 35 IBU 8.3% ABV
2) Locomotive Breath Imperial Stout and Noel Winter Ale
Extremely robust, dark and full of flavor. Copious amounts of roasted barley, black and chocolate malts provide intense flavor, color and aroma. 45 IBU 8.5% ABV
3) Noel Winter Ale
Brewed to celebrate the holiday season, this winter warmer uses various aromatic specialty malts and has a prominent hop character from mild American Noble varieties. 45 IBU 7% ABV
4) Klosterbier
Originally brewed at the Anacortes Brewery under the guidance of the visiting Brewmaster of Kalt Loch Brewery in Bavaria, this beer is modeled after a dark lager brewed by Kalt Loch for the Engelberg monastery. 35 IBU 5.3% ABV

1) Wing Point Winter Ale
Wing Point Winter Ale is our version of a Northwest Winter Warmer. The days are now darker and the rains have moved in, it’s time for a beer best drunk with friends in the comfort of a warm pub. Full-bodied with a malt complexity showing caramel, toffee, dried fruit and chocolate, with a hint of hopiness to remind you of the mist-shrouded fir trees just outside. 40 IBU 6.8 % ABV
2) 2012 Oak Toe Jam Barleywine
There are many theories as to how the island’s Toe Jam Hill got its strange name. (Unsurprisingly, most of those theories involve alcohol.) Old Toe Jam Barleywine has intense malt and caramel tones with chocolate and enough hops to back it up, with warming alcohol notes in the background and just a hint of honey. A small portion was then aged in Bainbridge Organic Distillers wheat whisky barrels. The result: Oak Toe Jam. 80 IBU 9.5% ABV

1) Cabin Fever Winter Warmer
Specially brewed and bottled for the Pacific Northwest winters, this winter warmer’s deep red-brown color and rich malty flavor will complement any hardy meal. While this beer is deceptively strong, it tastes smooth thanks to extra long, cool conditioning. It pairs well with rich, heavier foods and spicy dishes, however, Cabin Fever is also very satisfying on its own. 7.2% ABV
2) Imperial Oatmeal Stout
A “meal in a glass”. Lightly hopped, it is aged for one month to allow the medley of dark malts and oats to celebrate their union. 9.5% ABV

1) Kiln Warmer Winter Ale
Brickyard’s Winter Ale is just what the doctor ordered during the cold months to you and yours happy. It is lightly hopped and judiciously spiced with orange peel, coriander, canilla, aniseed and a bit of pepper. 6.3% ABV
2) Masonry Oatmeal Stout
Aroma: toasty, nutty, with chocolate like almost similar to Irish cream. Flavor: dark chocolate, coffee, toasty, slight oatmeal notes and very smooth. Appearance: dark brown to chocolate milk color, tan lacing. 6.8% ABV
3) Chocolate Porter w/ Pumpkins

4) Storm Surge Winter Ale
A brand new beer; malty yet light-bodied and ‘stained’ with Midnight Wheat Malt for color but very little of the dark, roasty flavors. Chinook, Cascade and Simcoe hops provide substantial yet subtle bitterness. 30 IBU 5.9% ABV
Dick’s Brewing, Centralia
1) Double Diamond Winter Ale
Our Northwest style winter seasonal is bold enough to get you through the cold weather. We fill the mash tun with Northwest premium 2-row malted barley and plenty of rich Munich malt. In addition, we use sweet caramel malt, malted white wheat and a touch of highly roasted black barley for complexity. Our winter ale has a balanced bitterness, lots of hop flavor and finally that warming alcohol characteristic of the style. We don’t call it Double Diamond, for nothing!
2) Dick’s Double Danger
This beer is the one the whole Dick’s crew is most proud of. Brewed in honor of our mentor, and friend Dick Young, we hope you knock a few back in his honor and memory. Dick loved his Danger Ale, so we thought it fitting that we use his original recipe and make it a bit more dangerous. With an alcohol of 8.5%, but with a smooth flavor and easy drinkability we are pretty sure you won’t notice. This beer doesn’t fit any category, won’t fit into some set criteria… and we like it that way.

2) Burn Ban Porter
A throwback to the ways Porter used to be made. The grain is smoked over a special blend of fruit woods to give the beer a unique taste not found in other Porters. Enjoy this with a thick New York Strip and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven.
3) Red Door Raspberry Hefeweizen
Using raspberries and raspberry honey from our local farms, we’ve crafted a beer perfect for reminiscing about the summer in these cold winter months. Balancing the tartness of the berries and the sweetness of the honey, we’ve found the middle of the road making an extremely drinkable brew.
4) Sasquatch’s Winter Fur Ale
In the winter, Bigfoot’s fur is shed as the temperature drops. Legend has it that the cold brings on a sweet nutty smell to their new shiny coat. We’ve captured the essence of the Sasquatch fur with our winter ale and the added nutmeg that gives it a unique kick. Keep warm and be safe knowing that the Sasquatch will not attack you when sipping this ale.

3) Pt. Defiance IPA
Pt. Defiance IPA is brewed with 4 different malted barleys. Centennial, Columbus and zythos hops provide the big hoppy flavor. Dry hopping with Falconers flight & amarillo hops provides this beer’s hop aroma. 70 IBU 6.1% ABV

1) Autumn Lager
Our example of the traditional German fest bier is full bodied and has a soft, rich malty flavor. With an aroma reminiscent bread crust and a beautiful deep gold color courtesy of Vienna and Munich malts, this beer is a treat for all your senses. 28 IBU 6.3% ABV
2) Little Czar
We like to call the Little Czar a Russian “seshperial” stout. Like a traditional Russian Imperial Stout, it’s a little bit licorice and a little bit chocolate and a lot of flavor. Unlike the traditional style, it won’t knock your block off with alcohol. 50 IBU 6.4% ABV

1) Mocha Death
A dark beer with huge espresso nose so big you can taste it. Pure cocoa and all the complexity of our Irish Death rolled together with the aforementioned coffee notes to dole out a highly enjoyable slap in the face. espresso+cocoa+irish death. 7% ABV
2) Iron Horse IPA
This ideal vehicle for hop delivery has been carefully prepared by our brewers by combing a couple of tasty-ass malts. Then they loaded the kettle, later on in the process, with hops to put the focus on hop flavor and aroma. They closed the deal, like they usually do, by dumping a fat load of hops into the fermenter. AKA dry-hopped the ish out of it. 6% ABV

This rich, amber strong ale was aged for several months in a Heaven Hills Kentucky Bourbon barrel. The beer was transferred from fermenter to a used bourbon barrel and allowed to undergo a secondary fermentation. During this extended contact with the charred oak interior of the barrel, the beer took on a very distinct and pleasingly warm bourbon character. A vanilla-like oak note adds a mellow richness as well. These flavors combine for a very unique and wonderful drinking experience. 8.5% ABV

1) Ursus Spelaeus Belgian Imperial Stout
Named for a long extinct Russian Cave Bear, Ursus Spelaeus is as deep and dark as the caves its namesake inhabited. Spelaeus has thick, rich maltiness with notes of chocolate, coffee, toffee, and subtle licorice in the nose and on the tongue with just enough hops to keep it balanced. The Belgian yeast strain adds touches of fruit, herbs, and spices. 10% ABV
2) Entendez Noel Belgian Quadrupel
Like most big Belgian holiday beers, Noel is bursting with subtly complex flavors and fits no particular beer style. Its explosion of sensations comes from just Belgian Pilsner malt, cane sugar, Motueka hops, Trappist yeast, water, and fermentation. Drink warm or cold in various glassware shapes and sizes to discover all its nuances. Entendez should age extremely well for years to come. 50 IBU 10.6% ABV
