Drama, lectures, dance and exhibitions fill this especially busy week in the arts. From the closing of the Mad Campus exhibition to the start of the UW World Series collaboration with Noche Flamenca on a new work, “Antigona,” there’s plenty to see and do. “Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom”

This autumn, the UW campus became Seattle’s most expansive art gallery through Mad Campus, an outdoor public art exhibition that spans approximately 2.5 miles and features 12 large-scale, temporary, site-specific works inspired by their locations. Free and open to the public, touring the installations is a great activity for families on a crisp fall day. The exhibit comes to a close this Saturday, Oct. 25. More info.
Factory Showroom “Industry”

The School of Art + Art History + Design announces its first Factory Showroom display, featuring no art, only labor, in the newly renovated Jacob Lawrence Gallery. “Industry” is the first program in Factory Showroom, a series of displays, labor demonstrations, motivational speeches, quality controls and new product launches organized by the gallery to explore the question, “Is a school a factory?” More info.

In a unique creative partnership, Noche Flamenca joins with acclaimed American theater director Lee Breuer to create a new work, “Antigona,” based on Sophocles’ ancient Greek heroine. Combining live music, song and dance, this world premiere will bring the fiery, expressive nature of flamenco to one of the world’s great tragedies. More info.

“Cold Empty Terrible”

Created in collaboration with and directed by Whit MacLaughlin, artistic director of the OBIE award-winning New Paradise Laboratories, this production is a resuscitation of a theatrical debacle embedded inside Anton Chekhov’s 1896 masterpiece, “The Seagull.” Members of the School of Drama Professional Actor Training Program turn molehill into mountain by devising an original work for the stage that aims to prove that a century of theatrical experimentation must be good for something. Music of Today: An Evening with Heatwarmer

The School of Music and the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) co-sponsor this series featuring groundbreaking new works and modern classics by faculty and guest composers. The series launches this year with a performance by Seattle group Heatwarmer (whose members include School of Music faculty member Luke Bergman and assorted Jazz Studies alumni), credited with creating some of the most original and eclectic work to emerge from Seattle’s thriving new music scene. David Alexander Rahbee conducts the UW Symphony in a concert of works by Dvorak, Richard Strauss and Mendelssohn. Jeff Fair (principal horn of the Seattle Symphony and UW faculty member) is the featured soloist on Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 in E Flat, Op. 11. The orchestra also welcomes the women singers of the University Chorale. More info.
