Getting the perfect pouty lips is not an easy task. You need the perfect color, the perfect texture and the perfect lipstick-applying technique if you really want your mouth to wow. Follow these tips for lips that boys will want to kiss and girls will want to have. Or vice versa.

1. Use a mascara wand to exfoliate – If you have dry lips, getting a soft and smooth texture after you apply lipstick is pretty much impossible. The solution is, of course, to exfoliate your lips before you apply color. All you need is a clean, disposable mascara wand. Apply a balm over your lips and softly brush them with the mascara wand. Then, apply lipstick as normal and enjoy the smooth and perfect results.

2. Use eye-shadow on your lips – If your favorite eye-shadow suffered a terrible accident crumbled, don’t throw it out just yet. Keep the broken pieces and use them on your mouth when you want a pop of color. Mix a bit of the eye-shadow with some balm on a spoon and then apply on your lips with a brush.

3. Turn any lipstick into a long-wearing one – If you can’t find the perfect shade of long-wear lipstick, don’t despair. You can achieve the same effect at home with a bit of translucent powder. Apply your lipstick as usual and then hold a tissue over your mouth. Dust translucent powder over it so a small amount will transfer onto your lips. This will lock in your color and leave you ready for a long day of looking fabulous.

4. Use lipstick liner the right way – Draw an “X” on the center of your upper lip for a perfect Cupid’s bow. Then, line the rest of your lips and fill in entirely with the liner, so the lipstick will have something to grip on to. Apply your lipstick as usual. This way, when it starts to wear off, you will still have an even color and you will avoid the awful “ring” of lip liner all around your mouth.

5. Reattach a broken lipstick with some heat – If the bullet of your lipstick broke off, find a lighter and reattach it. Simple melt the end a little bit and press it back against the base in the packaging. Then, use the lighter to melt the two pieces right were they meet so they evenly fuse back together. Just be careful of not leaving the lighter on for too long, or you will melt off the entire lipstick. And be careful with your fingers.

6. Make your lips appear larger by coloring the center a lighter shade – Apply your lipstick as you usually would over your entire mouth. Then, pick a color that is in the same family but in a much lighter  shade (you can even use concealer if you want a truly dramatic effect). Apply it in the center and use your fingertip to blend. The color pop at the center will make your lips look fuller.
