I wake up looking like Aurora from that movie where she sleeps so beautifully. Like every girl who listens to their inner self, I look in the mirror and she tells me, “Damn girl, you look beautiful, but you need to touch up those roots.”

Fine, my secret is out. I am not a natural blonde. I am a natural brunette. I do not have anything against showing off “what your momma and daddy gave ya”. I just do not like the shade of brunette I have. Let me just say that Chewbacca’s fur color is a prettier brown.

Being a blonde or a “natural blonde” like me really takes a lot of maintenance, and money. I spend money because it is worth it in the end. You have to be committed to keeping your hair looking natural as if it was your guilty pleasure. If Barbie can do it then so can you. Now let me tell you some fast, easy (if you know what you are doing) ways to get your hair looking blond, and you looking like natural blonde.

The first way is to get it professionally done. Do not do what I did. I totally damaged my brunette hair going through the color changing process. Excuse me for not knowing it was going to take 10 hours. Luckily I did not mess it up too much. A hair colorist hired to do what they went to school for will know what to do with your hair. It is better to go back to the stylist 4 or 6 times for the process. Make sure you know what type of blonde you are going for. You can use the full single process that might blend into your face if you are pale or you can get highlights. I opted to use both since my skin tone is caramel colored. There are different types of highlighting: foil, balayage (or as I learned to call it “hair painting”), low lighting, and chunking. Get 3 to 5 different highlights to a base color to make it look more natural. Balayage highlighting helps by giving it the natural look without having to retouch your roots as much. Click here to see how it is done. Hidden trade secret: ask your stylist to give you lower highlights around your face, so it can pop.

The second way to keep your blond hair looking natural is by using some of these recommended products. Purple is your new favorite color when it comes to shampoo. You want to look sassy not brassy, and that can easily happen if you use the wrong shampoo. Purple shampoos are great for helping the color stay in longer. Dry shampoo is great to have handy. You can use it to keep your blond hair looking natural longer without washing away the color. A leave-in conditioner is good to use once a week to keep your hair moisturizing beautiful. Make some extra room in your caddy for all the products you will be purchasing to maintain the blonde look.

The third way is to prep your hair before you go out to the pool, to the beach. Preparing your hair before you blow-dry, flat iron, or curl it is important too. If you are going into a pool with high levels of chlorinated water then make sure to wet your hair with bottled water before you go in. By not doing this, other people will not be green from envy; they will see green because the chlorinated water will likely turn your blonde hair to green. Special hair oils and sprays for blond hair are recommended especially if you are going to curl your hair, or apply any heat to it. No one wants a straw hat for hair.

The fourth way is too easy to be true. Put some lemon juice and water in a spray bottle. Spray your hair with it. Go outside to suntan; walk on the beach, read a book in the park, basically whatever just as long as you are under the sun for an hour. Voila! Natural blond highlights for free…well for however much the lemon juice was.

I am leaving the easiest tip for last. So the fastest way to get blonde hair is to purchase a high-end lace front wig. A fast and easy way to look like the blonde princess you are. If you cannot afford to get a lace front wig, then try one of the other ways. If you already have the blond hair but need to stretch out the salon visit, then guess who is going to be your new Bff? A yellow highlighter or pale matte golden/yellowish eyeshadow or face powder. Not only does it soak up the oil in your roots but it gives you this white-ish natural looking roots that resemble the rest of the color on your hair.

Being a “natural” blonde will never be in my genes. Maintaining my “blond” hair and buying the right products will make me look good in my jeans.
