FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Parkview Foundation received a check for $6,200 Thursday. The money came from the Blue Ball Open, a local golfing event foucsed on supporting education and awareness of prostate cancer.
The money will go to the Parkview Research Center to help fund ongoing and future prostate cancer research. All the funds raised from each year’s Blue Ball Open are given to outreach programs and services in the Fort Wayne area that support men who are dealing with a prostate cancer diagnosis.
“Awareness of the important of PSA screenings is important to catching and treating this potentially deadly cancer but the issues that matters most to men diagnosed with the disease is finding better ways to diagnose and treat,” said Cynthia Cornwell, Blue Ball Open Co-Chair. “That is why we have chosen to donate and support Parkview’s prostate cancer research. It is up to the researchers to find that life-saving intervention.”
The annual Blue Ball open is held each year in August. This year will mark the fifth year of the golf outing.
“Community support from philanthropic events like the Blue Ball Open is invaluable for not only the success of the Parkview Research Center, but also the success of the research being conducted for the benefit of our patients and the medical community,” said Michael J. Mirro, MD, FACC, Medical Director of Parkview Research Center.
Parkview Research Center is currently conducting eight unique prostate cancer treatment studies in addition to a Prostate Cancer Survivorship research study. The Survivorship Program focuses on spiritual, psychological, physical and financial adjustments prostate cancer survivors face after treatment is complete. The program’s vision is in alignment with the Parkview Research Center’s Cancer Program Accreditation through the American College of Surgeons.
