WA Premier Colin Barnett promised a 2 million dollar revamp to Perth’s Chinatown area.

The revamp will see a new entry statement built on Chinatown’s Roe Street entrance with new lightings, lanterns and road stenciling to revitalize the area.

This morning, the Premier and the Planning Minister John Day made the announcement, and granted 50,000 dollars to the Chung Wah Association for the Chinese New Year celebrations 2014.

“Chinatown is a popular location for people of all ages and an important business precinct in Northbridge that has been rundown for some time,” Mr Barnett said.

“This investment will transform the area to its former glory of the 1980s and ensure it remains an exciting and culturally important destination for years to come.”

It’s hopeful that the Perth City Link project will bring more tourists, workers and residents to Chinatown, presenting more opportunities for 13 restaurants in businesses.

WA Planning Minister John Day said laneways have been transformed into popular entertainment spots due to Perth’s new trend in urban renewal.

“Both the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) and the City of Perth have played an integral role in the success of these spaces and I look forward to what they will bring to the Chinatown revitalisation,” Mr Day said.
