At first Negan does not show any sort of interest in Daryl, though he is aware that Daryl and Dwight share hostile rivalry. When Daryl punches Negan after killing Abraham and taunting Rosita, Negan is shocked and impressed but as punishment Negan uses Lucille to bash Glenn's head into pieces, much to Daryl's horror and sadness. Still impressed by his bravery, Negan orders Dwight to capture Daryl, as he wants to make Daryl one of his own. Whenever Daryl says or does something he shouldn't, Negan orders Dwight to either torture him or to lock him back in his cell.

Still intrigued from earlier, Negan orders Dwight to capture Daryl before the group is released, as he wants to develop Daryl into another soldier. While in his capture, Negan finds Daryl's defiance and resolve both amusing and astounding. Despite having trouble breaking him into the Savior's ranks, Negan continued to enjoy having Daryl in his servitude up until Daryl's escape.
