Fulbright Award winning Tabla drummer Daniel Paul has played a lifetime of world music with many diverse artists who share his love for the sacred music of India. From the strictly classical musicians and dancers of the Ali Akbar College of Music, to the modern techno-laced chants of Lost at Last, and now accompanying the driving (kirtan) vocals of 2003 Grammy nominee Jai Uttal, Daniel continues to teach and tour world-wide, introducing new audiences to the ecstatic rhythms of the Tabla Kirtan is part of an ancient form of yoga known as bhakti, or the yoga of devotion. It is the practice of singing the many names of the Divine.
World Music Troubadour Gina Salá is a vocalist, composer, teacher and kirtan leader with a repertoire spanning 23 languages and over 4 decades of chanting experience. Born into a musical Acadian family, Salá began chanting at the age of 3 in an ashram. A life-long love of spirituality, Indian chanting, and the power of voice to heal and awaken has guided her life. Gina’s magnetic personality, captivating voice and wealth of musical experiences have led her from chanting with wandering sadhus in the mountains of India to programs at the United Nations in New York City, leading kirtan concerts and retreats in Japan and Asia and to the stage as lead singer for Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas.
Embark on a vocal journey through the sacred sounds of ancient India. Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai Uttal will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of "Kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga.
This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft and meditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Kirtan takes the participant on a deep emotional and musical journey through our mostly unexplored inner world. With solo performance and call-and-response group chanting, Jai creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression.
Jai has been leading Kirtans worldwide for over thirty years. "These ancient chants," writes Jai "contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries."
No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart,
independent of vocal or musical technique.
