NORMAL, Ala. (WAAY) - When it comes to reason behind Alabama A&M Bulldogs being undefeated and the 2nd ranked team in Black College Football, one does not have to look hard.
Standing 6’3 and 209 pounds Deaunte Mason might stand out in a team picture. However, if you look a little closer at the stat sheet after an AAMU football game, you see this young man’s name all over it.
The past three weeks have been short of sensational, while leading the Bulldogs to a perfect (5-0) start and capturing three SWAC Player of the Week awards.
Chances are there are many more to come for the native if Nashville Tennessee, now playing in his senior season.
Mason has been blessed with an enormous degree of natural football skills and he is not taking his blessings lightly.
“God has gifted me and I’m honored to be serving him as I play”, noted Mason as he attended AAMU’s weekly press conference on Monday.
He’s a familiar face at the Fellowship of Faith worship services on Sunday. “I’m a changed man; more so spiritually than athletically. God gets all the glory for what has happen to me and my teammates”, said a humbled Mason.
Many might say while Mason bows down in full view for all to see him praying, that he’s trying to imitate NFL Star Tim Tebow, but Mason will tell you, “It’s about Jesus not Tebow. That’s why I do it.”
Although at times his voice can appear quiet and unsure, Mason speaks loud and proud on the football field. So far this year, he’s covered close to 1,000 yards passing without an interception and 9 touchdowns throwing the ball at a near 70% completion rate.
If that’s not enough, Mason is a dual threat to run the ball as well against the opposition with a total of 6 rushing touchdowns on 261 yards.
The future looks bright for Deaunte Mason and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs with Mississippi Valley State due up as the next team that will see his greatness. Mason will tell anyone who listens, “this is God’s gift for all to see.”
