THE WINNER RECEIVES: The champion of the 2014 VSGA Amateur Championship receives the Schwarzschild Brothers Trophy and is exempt for the next 10 years, provided he remains an amateur.

2013 RECAP: Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach cemented his name and legend in commonwealth golf annals by scoring a 3 and 2 victory over collegian Ji Soo Park of Clifton to win last summer’s VSGA Amateur Championship at The Homestead’s Cascades Course. Last year marked the 100th playing of the VSGA Amateur.

Competing in his last VSGA Amateur before he turned professional later in the summer of 2013, Paolini, 22 at the time of his victory, became the second golfer to collect four titles in six years; commonwealth golf legend Vinny Giles is the other, winning four of his record seven titles in 1966, 1968, 1969 and 1971. Paolini won an unprecedented three straight Amateurs from 2008-10. His four victories in the event are tied for the third-most of all-time with Billy Howell. (Wynsol Spencer won five times.)

Paolini is now competing professionally on the European Tour, while Park is in this year’s field

WHO CAN ENTER: Open to VSGA members of all ages. Participants must have an active GHIN number established at a VSGA member club and meet the USGA Rules of Amateur Status.

ENTRIES: For the VSGA Amateur, more than 450 players attempted to qualify for this year’s championship.

Seventeen (17) golfers, including four past champions, are fully exempt from having to qualify for the VSGA Amateur Championship.

PAST CHAMPIONS IN THE FIELD: Past winners (four) who are fully exempt are Blacksburg’s Jake Mondy (2012), Haymarket’s Scott Shingler (2011), Martinsville’s Keith Decker (1988 and 1991) and Roanoke’s David Tolley (1983).

MULTIPLE WINS: Sixty-five players have won the VSGA Amateur Championship, and 21 have won two or more titles. Wynsol Spencer of Newport News trails Giles’ seven championships with five.

Paolini and Billy Howell of Richmond won four times. Chandler Harper of Portsmouth, Jack Hamilton of Newport News and Tom McKnight are three-time champions. Fourteen players have won the VSGA’s most prestigious amateur championship twice.

Howell (1928) and Harper (1930) of Portsmouth were 16 years old when each won his first VSGA Amateur crown. Harper defeated Howell in the 1930 final at The Cascades Course. Harper earned his second VSGA Amateur crown in 1933 at the age of 19. Howell defeated Harper in 1931 at Hampton Golf Club.

ALTERED DYNAMIC: A look back at the past eight VSGA Amateur Championships shows 24 collegians and 16 juniors (18 years old and younger) were in the field for the 2006 championship at The Homestead. In 2007 at Lowes Island Club’s Island Course in northern Virginia (now known as Trump National Golf Club, Washington, D.C.), the numbers were 28 collegians and 20 juniors.

The 2008 renewal at Kingsmill Resort’s River Course in Williamsburg featured 21 players who were playing on their respective college golf team and 15 juniors. In 2009 at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk, there were 21 players playing on their college golf team at the time and a record 24 junior golfers competing.

In 2010 at Belle Haven Country Club, there were 31 players that were playing on their college golf team and 17 junior golfers in the field. Three years ago at The Virginian, there were 22 junior golfers in the starting field and 25 players competing on their college golf team. In 2012 at Bayville Golf Club, 18 junior golfers were in the field, along with 26 competitors who were playing college golf.

Last year at The Homestead, 19 junior golfers and 26 collegians were a part of the field.

Vinny Giles, the premier amateur in Virginia golf history and record seven-time VSGA Amateur winner, was 19 and a college student at the University of Georgia when he won his first VSGA Amateur Championship in 1962. He captured his second in 1964 and added titles in 1966, 1968, 1969 and 1971. He was the U.S. Amateur Championship runner-up three years in a row (1967-69) when it was a stroke play event. He finally won the U.S. Amateur in 1972.

The winners in the years Giles didn’t were older, career-amateur players such as Nelson Broach, Wayne Jackson and Sam Wallace.

Lanny Wadkins (1970), Bobby Wadkins (1972 over teenager Curtis Strange) and Strange (1974-75) were college players when they triumphed. John Rollins was at Virginia Commonwealth University when he won back-to-back in 1996-97. Steve Marino was at the University of Virginia when he won in 1999 and Jay Woodson was at James Madison University when he picked up consecutive titles in 2002-03.

THE ‘FACE’ OF THE VSGA AMATEUR:Throughout its history, several champions have stamped themselves as “the face” of the VSGA’s premier men’s event. They were the players to beat for a particular stretch of years before their runs ended.

Some, like Billy Howell of Richmond and Chandler Harper of Portsmouth, came along at the same time.

Howell was 16 years old when he won for the first time in 1928. He was the medalist in 1929 but didn’t reach the final. Then, starting in 1930, either Harper or Howell captured the next six championships. Harper was 16 when he defeated Howell in 1930. Howell beat Harper in 1931 and triumphed again in 1932. Harper was triumphant in 1933 when Howell was medalist and again in 1934 as the medalist. The run ended with Howell winning a fourth title in 1935.

Four years later in 1939, Wynsol Spencer of Newport News won his first VSGA Amateur crown. Twenty years later, in 1959, Spencer earned his fifth and last title.

Spencer won his second VSGA Amateur in 1948, and it interrupted a streak by Jack Hamilton, another champion from Newport News.

Hamilton won for the first time in 1942. Then when the VSGA Amateur resumed after the war, Hamilton finished as the runner-up in 1946. He won title No. 2 in 1947 and No. 3 in 1949.

Vinny Giles, who started out in Lynchburg before moving to Richmond, holds the record for the most titles with seven. Six came in a 10-year span from 1962 to 1971. He won No. 7 in 1987.

Each decade beginning with Giles in the 1960s has produced a champion winning back-to-back championships. Curtis Strange of Virginia Beach won in 1974-75, Tom McKnight of Galax in 1984-85 (he won a third title in 1989) and John Rollins in 1996-97. It happened twice in a four-year period when Jay Woodson of Powhatan won in 2002-03 and Billy Hurley of Leesburg in 2004-05.

Then, along came Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach, who was the face of the VSGA Amateur from 2008-13. In 2008, he became the youngest champion in seven decades and claimed three victories in the event before turning 20 before triumphing last year as a 22-year-old.
