PORTSMOUTH –– Richmond-area golfers Tom Rash and Jim Hudson of Midlothian as well as northern Virginians Roger Pitkin (Springfield)-Robert Murphy II (Reston) each shot 5-under 65 and headline a crowded leader board entering Thursday’s final round of the 1st Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Four-Ball Championship being conducted at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club. The event is open to golfers ages 65 and older.

Rash-Hudson and Pitkin-Murphy are a stroke ahead of the combinations of Peter Jacobi (Arlington)-Tom Flory (Madison) and Tom Grady (Marshall)-John Casstevens (Glen Allen), who each returned 4-under 66. Virginia Beach residents James Walker and Richard Wight as well as Lou Moelchert (Richmond)-Tom Hackett (Powhatan) had 3-under 67 and are two shots off the pace.

Three other tandems posted 2-under 68 and are three back—south Hampton Roads golfers Murray Rudisill (Portsmouth)-J.P. Leigh (Suffolk), David King (Potomac Falls)-Harry Cain (Williamsburg) and central Virginians John Mann (Richmond)-Tony Aguiar (Glen Allen). In the four-ball format, each player plays his ball into the hole, but only the best score is counted toward the team aggregate.

The two teams sharing the overnight lead each had six birdies against a bogey on the first day. Pitkin contributed four of the team’s six birdies. Two under par for the round through 12 holes, Pitkin knocked in a seven-footer for birdie at the par-4 12th, added another at the ensuing hole and knocked in a five-footer at the par-5 finishing hole to help give the team a share of the top spot.

Pitkin turned 70 on the first day of the event and found the pace on Elizabeth Manor’s smooth putting surfaces en route to bettering his age by two strokes, estimating that he shot 2-under 68 on his own ball.

“That was the highlight for me,” said Pitkin, a member at Army Navy Country Club. “It’s a fun course to play and the greens putt really well.”

Rash contributed four birdies, including a pair early in the outward half, before Hudson knocked in a 10-footer at the par-4 ninth as the tandem shot four under par on the first nine. Hudson then knocked in a 40-footer for birdie at the par-3 16th, vaulting them into a share of the lead.

The two play together regularly at Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian and know one another’s game well.

“We played solidly all the way around,” Rash said. “It was fun to hit some shots close and make some birdies.”

Jacobi-Flory birdied four of the first six holes, played bogey-free and made 12 consecutive pars to close their round.

“We’re in good position. Now it’s all about coming from behind,” Jacobi said.

Grady-Casstevens also went without a blemish on their scorecard and shot 3-under 32 on the inward half.

“It’s super senior golf, but we all still love to be competitive,” Grady said.
