SISSONVILLE, W.Va. –– The eight-golfer Maryland team posted a wire-to-wire 15-stroke victory at the 5th Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational on Thursday at Edgewood Country Club (6,810 yards, par 34-37—71).

Maryland, representing the Maryland State Golf Association, notched its fourth win in the history of the event. Comprised of an eight-count-six format, Maryland posted a 4-under-par 848 aggregate (419-429). Virginia, representing the Virginia State Golf Association, finished second (11-over 863, 435-428). West Virginia, representing the West Virginia Golf Association, was third (47-over 899, 449-450).

For Maryland, three competitors completed the one-day, 36-hole event in red numbers led by Nathan Tenpas (Chevy Chase, Md.), who accounted for a 5-under 137 (71-66) total. Meanwhile, Brent Bubes of North Bethesda, Md., (71-70) and Matt Oshrine of Baltimore (66-75) finished with 1-under 141 aggregates. Oshrine shot five under to record the low round of the morning. Reigning Maryland State Golf Association Junior Amateur champion Bennett Buch (Sykesville, Md.) shot even-par 142 (70-72). In the morning session, Jon Carr (Bethesda, Md.) had 2-under 69, while David Long (Catonsville, Md.) returned 1-over 72 en route to helping Maryland build a 16-shot lead over Virginia heading into the afternoon session. Long carded another 72 in the afternoon that was counted among the team’s six best scores.

On the Virginia side, Richmond’s Mark Lawrence Jr., the reigning VSGA Junior Match Play winner, shot 9-under 133 (67-66) to garner individual medalist honors. In the afternoon, Lawrence played the last five holes in four under par, including an eagle-3 at the par-5 finishing hole. His five under par score in the afternoon matched the low after lunch, matching the score turned in by Maryland’s Tenpas. Also for Virginia, Logan Yates (Ruckersville, Va.) was next-best for the contingent from the commonwealth, shooting even-par 142 (73-69). Virginia’s 2-over 428 total in the afternoon was a team-best as northern Virginian Connor Messick of Oak Hill, Va., had even-par 71 over the course of the final 18 holes. Roanoke’s Nick Brediger (71 in the morning) and Richmond’s Yoseph Dance (73 in the afternoon) both had 36-hole scores of 6-over 148. Leesburg’s Ryan O’Sullivan contributed a score of 1-over 72 (9-over 151) in the afternoon      

For host West Virginia, Trent McPherson (Charleston, W.Va.) shot 4-over 146 after registering consecutive rounds of 73. Charleston’s Christian Casingal (74-75) and Cam Moore of Spencer (73-76) closed the competition at 7-over 149. Grant Humphrey’s (Poca, W.Va.) rounds of 74-76 (8-over 150) counted toward the team aggregate during both sessions.
