Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) unveiled Project Morpheus, their forthcoming virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) as the Game Developers Conference (GDC) back in March, and since then VRFocus has followed the project and the many software titles already confirmed for it. More recently however, SCE has reiterated that the hardware aesthetic isn’t final and that the team are already working on a new design.
Speaking to VRFocus at GDC, Jed Ashforth, senior designer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), suggested that the VR device was still in the early stages, despite how consumer-ready it felt even at that point. This was reiterated this week to TechRadar.
“We’re making new discoveries and advances every day,” he said. “The final hardware will be not a lot like this. There will be a lot of things that will change. Physically it will probably look different.”
As was suggested at GDC, Ashforth confirmed that the design that SCE are showing now was locked down for the sake of getting it into developers’ hands. There have been a number of previous Project Morpheus designs revealed also, but the sleek silver/black model is what everyone is now familiar with.
“We had to get to a point where we said ‘Right, this is good for developers to start work on’, and any further advances that come along, we’ll just send out further units.” Stated Ashforth.
Sony World Wide Studio Immersive Technology Group director Simon Benson told TechRadar that even the current 1080p display could change before it hits market, but added that the feedback on the vision quality has been very positive so far. VRFocus will keep you updated with any future iterations of the Project Morpheus hardware.
