By now we all know that the Americans have way more content on Netflix than Canadians do. This is due to ancient license agreements, which have not caught up to present time. However, if you use a service like Unlocator you can get American Netflix on your Apple TV and other device while using your Canadian Netflix account.

Unlocator is a so-called DNS service. By changing your Apple TVS network settings to use Unlocators DNS you can make Netflix think you are located in the US. As a result you will get the American content instead of the Canadian.

Setup Apple TV for American Netflix

Here is a quick step guide for setting up American Netflix on an Apple TV. Don’t let the number of steps scare you – it takes about 5 minutes from start to end.

First go create a free Unlocator account

Then go to Settings > General > Network on the Apple TV

Select Wired or Wireless depending on how you connect to the Internet

Select configure DNS and select Manual

Enter 50.112.186.233 as DNS and click Done

Go to Settings and select Sleep Now

Unplug the Apple TV for 10 seconds and plug back in

You now have American Netflix

This is seriously all it takes to get American Netflix in Canada on your Apple TV.

Switching between American Netflix to Canadian Netflix

Now the cool thing is that Unlocator allows you to switch between the different regions. Simply log into your account home on the Unlocator website. Once logged in find “channel settings”. Here you can switch between all Netflix regions in the world. So if you want to watch Canadian Netflix again simply select Canada and press update location and boom you have Canadian Netflix. All Netflix regions are available so this drastically increases the content you can watch with your Netflix account.

Granted that American Netflix has the most content but don’t knock UK Netflix either. Actually the UK Netflix has more up to date breaking bad content.

American Netflix on Other Devices

So the guide above was specific for the Apple TV. However the process is pretty much the same for all other devices as well. Simply check out the setup guides to find a tutorial for other devices. American Netflix is supported on a long range of devices including: Computers, iPad, iPhone, Android, Smart TVS, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and much more.

What Content is Available on American Netflix?

Well with about 14.000 different titles American Netflix runs circles around Netflix Canada. It’s mostly the TV series that sets American Netflix apart from the Canadian counterpart.

Shows like: 30 Rock, Ally McBeal, Fraiser, Grey´s Anatomy, Heroes, High School Musical, Kardashians and much more are only available in the US.

As mentioned above the Unlocator service allows you to switch region as you please. So the method is not a question of choosing American Netflix over Canadian Netflix but rather a question of adding additional content to your account.

Get American Netflix in Super HD

Netflix no longer requires your ISP to be a part of Open Connect in order to get Super HD. This means that with Unlocator you can get Super HD on 3rd generation Apple TVs if your connection is fast enough. Even with a standard connection you should get regular 720/1080p content from the American version of Netflix.

Surveys say that about 10 percent of Canadians have a Netflix account. According to Netflix there are only 2.5 million Netflix users in Canada. The difference in numbers is coming from the fact that lots of Canadians already using services like Unlocator. In other words – DNS services are becoming really popular with the Canadians and with good reason. It’s by far the best way to get American Netflix if you are Canadian. It’s fast and reliable and best of all it works with the Apple TV unlike a VPN connection.
